As Dumbledore's voice fell, all manner of food suddenly appeared on the empty plates atop the house tables.
To fulfill the promise of making everyone feel "just like at home," the House-elves had actually begun preparing long ago. The cakes Wizet and Luna had eaten earlier were the best proof of that.
The House-elves had pulled out all the stops, presenting dishes from the regions where each magical school was located. The entire Great Hall was filled with mouthwatering aromas.
Luna liked trying new things, so she sampled nearly every dish. If she found something tasty, she would spoon some onto Wizet's plate so he could have a proper taste too;
One example was an African-style plantain stew. The sauce-coated plantains had a soft, creamy texture, with a taste and mouthfeel similar to potato stew;

The students' reason for disliking it was actually very simple. When they speared a snail still coated in slime, the first thing that came to mind was the Blast-Ended Skrewts from Care of Magical Creatures;
Hagrid's appearance could not have been more timely. The Hogwarts students looked at the bandages on his hands and recalled Hagrid's battles with the Blast-Ended Skrewts;
Then they looked at the steaming escargot gratin... and instantly lost all appetite.
"I think this escargot gratin tastes quite good... Aren't you going to try it?" A clear voice
