After some thought, Wizet was able to sketch out the rough sequence of events:

Voldemort broke the Fidelius Charm and entered Harry's home, casting the Killing Curse in succession to kill James Potter and Lily;

The Killing Curse was special in that it summoned a vortex symbolizing "death," whose primary purpose was to draw in souls;

Because Voldemort had created multiple Horcruxes, his soul had become extremely unstable. Such an unstable soul left him susceptible to the influence of that vortex symbolizing "death";

When Voldemort cast the Killing Curse, intending to take Harry's life and let the vortex symbolizing "death" devour Harry's soul, Lily's "protective magic of love" took effect;

The "protective magic of love" rebounded the Killing Curse and caused it to strike Voldemort. Because Voldemort had created multiple Horcruxes, the vortex symbolizing "death" could not truly draw away his soul;

Even so, Voldemort still had to pay a price. The vortex symbolizing "death" tore at his soul, splitting off a new fragment;
