Background
Tom Marvolo Riddle grew up in an orphanage, where he could consciously use wandless magic from childhood. He intimidated other children, stole possessions, harmed animals, and took a child into a cave after which the victim was left terrified and confused. 127 1414 1415
Albus Dumbledore personally brought him his Hogwarts letter. Tom initially treated Dumbledore with suspicion and hostility, but became eager to attend Hogwarts after learning he was a wizard. He had already developed a belief that he was fundamentally different from everyone else. 1413 1414
At Hogwarts, Tom found belonging, learned of his exceptional ancestry, and became deeply attached to the school. He was ambitious, cultivated professors’ favor, and used charm and flattery to advance his goals. 116 363 He confirmed his descent from Salazar Slytherin through Parseltongue and founded the Knights of Walpurgis, using the group to foster pure-blood supremacy and discord among Hogwarts houses. 1415 188
After leaving school, he worked at Borgin and Burkes, manipulated Hepzibah Smith for access to Hufflepuff’s Cup and Slytherin’s Locket, and poisoned her when his impatience overcame him. 673 1417
He adopted the name Lord Voldemort, an anagram of “Tom Marvolo Riddle,” and formed the Knights of Walpurgis, later renamed the Death Eaters. 363 188 During his original rise, he also sacrificed his ability to understand love in exchange for the Death Spell Command, gaining power rapidly enough to challenge Dumbledore and ignite a wizarding war across England. 824
Appearance
Voldemort’s appearance changes dramatically across his bodies, soul states, and magical transformations.
- As Tom Riddle — pale, handsome, black-haired, with deep-set dark eyes; he wore Slytherin robes as a student. 315 382
- Post-Horcrux transformation — wax-pale skin, red-glowing eyes, and a serpentine appearance resembling a skinned snake. 1417
- Restored Dark Lord form — tall and thin, bald, pale with a bluish cast, noseless except for narrow slits, and narrow scarlet eyes with vertical pupils. 1037
- Soul/possession form — often manifests as black mist, able to inhabit hosts including Quirrell, Lockhart, snakes, and Antonin Dolohov. 647 723 1065
- Later disguise — at Durmstrang, he assumes a handsome long-haired form in fitted dark-green robes, though his scarlet eyes remain. 1192
Personality
Voldemort is defined by extreme self-regard. His magical path, “I Alone Am Supreme,” treats his own will as more important than morality, established rules, or the lives of others. 1427 His fear of death and bodily vulnerability drives both his Horcruxes and the lethal protections surrounding them. 1422
He is manipulative, patient, and highly calculating when pursuing a useful goal. He concealed himself inside Lockhart’s damaged soul, waited for Tom Riddle’s fragment to weaken, and then absorbed it to restore and strengthen himself. 389 390 He can also use charm strategically, as shown by his calculated courtship of Hepzibah Smith. 673
Cruelty remains central to his rule. He uses the Cruciatus Curse to enforce obedience, regards followers and captives as tools, and treats damaged students as material for magical experiments. 1043 1705 However, after his return, he becomes more cautious and politically flexible, even offering former followers forgiveness when doing so may expand his support. 1002 1043
Despite his arrogance, Voldemort retains a powerful curiosity for magic. Reading Wizet’s books rekindles in him a long-forgotten joy of learning, unsettling him because it evokes the influence of the Tom Riddle fragment within his soul. 1199
His insistence that he alone must stand at the center of the world leaves him unable to tolerate equality, dependence, or subordination. This trait makes his cooperation with Herpo inherently unstable and later leaves him humiliated by My Lord’s dominance. 1587 1986
Abilities & Skills
Horcruxes, Soul Fragmentation, and Possession
Voldemort split his soul into multiple Horcruxes, allowing him to survive the destruction of his body and manifest as black mist. His repeated soul-splitting damaged his humanity and emotional capacity, leaving him cold, unstable, and potentially mad. 379 564 1585
- Possesses living hosts, including Quirinus Quirrell, Gilderoy Lockhart, snakes, and Antonin Dolohov. 103 389 647 1065
- Can conceal himself inside a damaged soul rather than merely taking over a body, allowing him to evade detection. 389
- Devoured the independent Tom Riddle soul fragment through an unstable bloodline ritual, restoring part of himself and increasing his power. 390 783
- His soul fragments can act independently when excessively large or unusually damaged. 379 380
- The Killing Curse can disrupt his bodiless state, but Horcruxes enable him to escape death’s pull. 564
- Planned to implant pruned soul fragments into transformed Squibs, creating an army tied to his own soul and subject to his direct control. 1372 1587
Death Spell Command
Voldemort possesses the Death Spell Command, a powerful magical command obtained by paying with his capacity to understand love. 824
- The command allowed him to grow rapidly in power during his original rise and contend with Dumbledore during the first wizarding war. 824
- The loss of love left him unable to comprehend Lily Potter’s sacrificial protection, leading him to seek Harry Potter’s blood as a means of overcoming it. 824 923
Dark Magic and Dueling
Voldemort is regarded as an exceptionally dangerous Dark wizard with profound magical theory and combat ability. 105 1427
- Casts the Killing Curse repeatedly and with exceptional speed. 1045 1058
- Uses the Cruciatus Curse for punishment, interrogation, and control; later demonstrates the ability to inflict it through physical contact rather than conventional wandcasting. 647 1193
- Employs Fiendfyre in the form of a massive serpent. 1060
- Can transfigure enemy constructs, such as Wizet’s Blood Pact Knights, into venomous snakes. 1060
- Defeated Herpo in a destructive duel that heavily damaged Durmstrang’s headmaster’s office and castle. 1630
- During the assault on Hogwarts, Apparated behind Dumbledore to cast the Killing Curse and conjured a blazing black whip of fire in close combat. 1944
- Can use black mist to break free of restraints and evade attacks in the air. 1945
Mental Magic
Voldemort is skilled in Occlumency, Legilimency, and soul-based manipulation.
- Uses Occlumency to resist the emotional pull of Hogwarts memories within the Soul Maze. 116
- Reads Fenrir Greyback’s memories to investigate his defeat. 647
- Commonly combines Cruciatus with Legilimency to break followers and uncover their secrets. 1193
- Used mental magic to alter Hokey’s memories after Hepzibah Smith’s death. 723
Bloodline and Ritual Magic
Voldemort possesses unusual mastery of bloodline magic, developed through his investigation of Parseltongue, ancestry, and ancient magical records. 1428
- Created an unstable ritual using unicorn blood, snake flesh, Runespoor eggs, and memory to reabsorb Tom Riddle’s soul fragment. 393 783
- Used Harry Potter’s blood in a resurrection ritual, gaining the ability to harm Harry despite Lily Potter’s protection rather than acquiring that protection for himself. 923 1001 824
- Alters Squibs through soul damage, Lycanthropy, and Fire Salamander blood to create weak “Muggles who can use magic.” 1586 1782
- Plans to create an army controlled by his own soul particles, strengthening himself while ensuring absolute control over his followers. 1587
Flight Charm
Voldemort invented a complex Ritual Magic Flight Charm that enables high-speed unaided flight. 454 1427
- The charm is based on his magical path of “I Alone Am Supreme,” treating Voldemort as the fixed center while the world shifts around him. 1430
- Its ritual involves Ashwinders, mirrored gestation, a homunculus resembling Voldemort, and the Draught of Living Death. 1429
- The charm contains a hidden trap and is dangerous to replicate without understanding Voldemort’s magical path. 454 1428
Dark Mark Warfare Magic
Voldemort created the Dark Mark as a communications and control system for the Death Eaters. 923 1116
- Death Eaters can sense Voldemort’s presence and summon him through their Marks. 923
- The Mark incorporates the Cruciatus Curse, allowing him to inflict pain and maintain fear-based discipline. 1116
- He can use the Marks to project himself and cause Dark Marks to manifest across the world. 1040 1041
- His identity-centered magical path allows him to perceive people who directly invoke the name “Voldemort.” 1512
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Wand — frequently expended or discarded during large-scale magic, particularly while transporting Dark creatures by Portkey. 1935
- Yew Wand — his principal wand during the assault on Hogwarts, used to counter powerful spells and cast the Killing Curse against Dumbledore. 1944 1969
- Riddle’s Diary — a Horcrux containing the independent Tom Riddle fragment; became an ordinary diary after Voldemort absorbed that fragment. 562
- Slytherin’s Locket — Horcrux hidden behind powerful Dark Magic protections. 666 673
- Resurrection Stone Ring — a Horcrux made from the legendary Resurrection Stone; after its destruction or damage was discovered, Herpo and Calchas recreated the broken ring using the Eye of Heaven. 1422 1685 1714
- Hufflepuff’s Cup — Horcrux acquired through the murder of Hepzibah Smith. 673
- Ravenclaw’s Diadem — Horcrux concealed in Hogwarts’ hidden room of abandoned objects. 1802
Relationships
- Albus Dumbledore — Former teacher and lifelong adversary. Dumbledore distrusted Tom from their first meeting and later regretted failing to handle him differently. 127 1413
- Harry Potter — Prophesied enemy whose scar contains a fragment of Voldemort’s soul. Voldemort seeks Harry’s blood to overcome Lily Potter’s protection. Their wands later become locked by a golden magical connection during the Battle of Hogwarts. 999 1001 1632 1969
- Wizet Lovegood — Repeated opponent and subject of Voldemort’s interest. Voldemort tried to corrupt and possess him, while Wizet captured a fragment of Voldemort in the Spirit-Calling Casket and studied his magic. Wizet later helped Selina Pendragon seize Voldemort’s Squib Army. 103 116 723 1983
- Tom Riddle — Voldemort’s independent past soul fragment. Both sought to devour the other, but Voldemort ultimately reabsorbed him. 389 390
- Quirinus Quirrell — Early host whose body Voldemort possessed and exploited without concern for his survival. Quirrell later opposed Voldemort with alchemy empowered by the Philosopher’s Stone. 103 379 1945
- Gilderoy Lockhart — Host possessed through his damaged soul, allowing Voldemort to remain concealed. 389
- Barty Crouch Jr. — Formerly fanatically loyal servant whom Voldemort considered one of his most capable followers. He later assisted the Ministry in persuading Dark wizards to turn against Voldemort. 763 1705 1971
- Severus Snape — Valuable but distrusted follower; Voldemort values Snape’s skill while repeatedly testing his loyalty. During Voldemort’s final battle, Snape does not answer his command to kill Dumbledore. 1190 1192 1971
- Bellatrix Lestrange — Fiercely devoted Death Eater who continues defending Voldemort even when he appears defeated. 1040 1063
- Fenrir Greyback — Werewolf servant intended to help build Voldemort’s werewolf army. 647
- Herpo — Uneasy collaborator and eventual dueling rival. Voldemort refuses to submit to Herpo’s control and ultimately forces cooperation through superior power and intimidation, though Herpo continues planning vengeance against him. 1372 1629 1630 1898
- Calchas — Seer and Durmstrang headmaster used by Voldemort for his Eye of Heaven. Voldemort repeatedly tortured him and killed him in anger after learning of Dumbledore’s plans; Herpo later revived him. 1708 1715 1743 1753
- Selina Pendragon — Opponent who, with Wizet’s assistance, took control of Voldemort’s Squib Army. 1983
- My Lord — Voldemort’s overwhelmingly powerful master. My Lord immobilized Voldemort, treated him with contempt, and chose to retain him as a “collectible.” 1983 1986
Story Role / Major Arcs
First Return and the Soul Maze
Voldemort first appears at Hogwarts while possessing Quirrell. He forces Wizet toward the Forbidden Forest, later attempts to possess Wizet directly, and confronts Dumbledore, Wizet, and Quirrell within his Soul Maze. 103 116
Tom Riddle’s Reabsorption
An autonomous Tom Riddle fragment attempts to gain a body and replace his future self. Voldemort secretly possesses Lockhart, sabotages Tom’s resurrection, and uses bloodline ritual magic to absorb the fragment back into himself. 382 389 390 393
Rebuilding Power
After losing plans to kill Harry through werewolf wizards and Dementors, Voldemort concludes that Harry’s blood is essential to overcoming Lily Potter’s protection. He reunites with Barty Crouch Jr. and prepares a resurrection ritual requiring blood from Harry and another person. 613 763
Public Return and Azkaban
Voldemort publicly reveals his return by projecting Dark Marks worldwide and addressing the Death Eaters imprisoned in Azkaban. He presents himself as the leader of a “new era” for wizards and temporarily adopts a more conciliatory approach toward former followers. 1040 1043
He later battles Dumbledore and Wizet, is trapped in a water prison, escapes through possession, and finally casts the Killing Curse on himself to flee Azkaban when Dumbledore’s magic becomes unbearable. 1060 1063 1065
Durmstrang and Herpo
Voldemort takes control of Durmstrang, using it as a base for Dark Magic instruction, experimentation, and recruitment. 1192 1197 His cooperation with Herpo is unstable: he tortures Herpo, duels him, learns the complete prophecy concerning Harry, and remains determined to ensure that no one controls him. 1629 1630 1632
Horcrux Crisis and Experimentation
As Dumbledore and Wizet identify and destroy Horcruxes, Voldemort becomes increasingly paranoid. He attempts to verify the safety of his remaining soul anchors, seeks to reclaim Hufflepuff’s Cup from Gringotts, and murders Calchas in anger after learning of Dumbledore’s plans. 1714 1743
At Durmstrang, he collects harmed students for experimentation and continues developing methods to manipulate souls, bodies, and magical bloodlines. 1705 1782
Attack on Hogwarts
Voldemort commands Dementors, Inferi, Trolls, goblins, and other Dark creatures in an assault on Hogwarts. The Dementors hesitate because of their fear of Wizet Lovegood, forcing Voldemort to rely on Portkey transportation and direct command of his forces. 1935
After Hogwarts’ magical energy field collapses, Voldemort allows the Dementors to advance and personally duels Dumbledore. He is subsequently attacked by Quirrell, who uses Philosopher’s Stone-powered alchemy against him, and becomes locked in an unusual golden wand connection with Harry. 1941 1944 1945 1969
Barty Crouch Jr. and a group of Dark wizards eventually turn against Voldemort under Ministry pressure, leaving him increasingly isolated. 1971
Loss of the Squib Army
During the later conflict, Voldemort realizes that Selina Pendragon has taken control of his Squib Army with Wizet’s assistance. Already injured and unable to move, he is then frozen by My Lord’s overwhelming Petrification Spell and reduced to a captive “collectible.” 1983 1986
