Background

Tom Marvolo Riddle grew up in an orphanage, where he could consciously use wandless magic from childhood. He intimidated other children, stole possessions, harmed animals, and took a child into a cave after which the victim was left terrified and confused. 127 1414 1415

Albus Dumbledore personally brought him his Hogwarts letter. Tom initially treated Dumbledore with suspicion and hostility, but became eager to attend Hogwarts after learning he was a wizard. He had already developed a belief that he was fundamentally different from everyone else. 1413 1414

He is manipulative, patient, and highly calculating when pursuing a useful goal. He concealed himself inside Lockhart’s damaged soul, waited for Tom Riddle’s fragment to weaken, and then absorbed it to restore and strengthen himself. 389 390 He can also use charm strategically, as shown by his calculated courtship of Hepzibah Smith. 673

Cruelty remains central to his rule.
