"If this kind of incense appears in the house, someone must have died!"
Uncle Nine looked at the incense Qiusheng had brought back from the graveyard, his brows tightly furrowed. He vaguely sensed that something bad was about to happen. He told his two disciples that Old Master Ren's corpse was about to turn into a zombie.
He then had his disciples prepare paper, brush, ink, knives, and swords, carrying out the whole process in one smooth, practiced flow.
"Sure enough, watching it through a screen and seeing it firsthand feel completely different. My sense of security is through the roof!"
After the Ink-Black Net had been set up and Qiusheng was about to inspect it, Qing Mo noticed that Wencai was suddenly acting a little strange. He seemed to be under someone's control. On closer sensing, it felt as though he was being controlled by the will of the world. Although Qing Mo had put it into slumber, that was merely to keep it from interfering with him. This world was still operating as usual, and what was meant to happen would still happen.
"It seems the zombie breaking out of its coffin is inevitable. Even if they want to seal it inside for good, it will still come out for one reason or another."
At nightfall, the zombie touched the ink line and made a noise, waking Uncle Nine. Yet because Wencai was being controlled by the will of the world, Uncle Nine's attention was drawn away, allowing the zombie to break out of the coffin in the latter half of the night.
"It's almost time for me to step in. Even though A-Wei's hilarious interrogation room scene is gone, I can still give Uncle Nine the good karma of saving Master Ren."
Master Ren was still checking the account books in his study when his own father suddenly smashed through the door. When it saw Master Ren, it smiled. When Master Ren saw it, he wet himself!
Just as Master Ren was about to be impaled to death by Old Master Ren's fingers, Qing Mo acted, shifting Master Ren to his side. He then had a rooster crow at once. The zombie thought dawn was breaking and hurried away, so it would not go after Ren Tingting because Master Ren had suddenly vanished.
Master Ren had thought he was about to die, but in the blink of an eye, he saw a man as elegant as jade, handsome and refined, with an extraordinary bearing—just like all the readers.
The two of them were floating in midair. Qing Mo stood beside him with a smile, and Master Ren, having only just recovered from the shock of realizing he had been saved, discovered that he was suspended in the air. His eyes rolled back, and he fainted.
"Ahhh!"
"What are you yelling for? Had I known, I wouldn't have saved you. You're already so old, yet your voice is still so loud."
Master Ren woke up in his own bed and found Qing Mo sitting in a chair, looking at him. Recalling how his father had come back to life last night and tried to kill him, and how this young man before him had saved his life, he immediately tumbled out of bed and knelt before Qing Mo.
"Immortal, Immortal, save me! I-I... what happened to my father? H-He came back to life?"
"Sigh... If only you had been willing to listen to Uncle Nine back then. Uncle Nine realized your father was going to become a zombie, which was why he told you to cremate him on the spot. If I hadn't intervened last night, your zombie father would have killed you, and then you would have become a zombie too!"
"Ah! This... If I'd known my father would become a zombie, I definitely would have had Uncle Nine cremate him right there. I only thought my father had been afraid of fire while he was alive!"
"Immortal, please, please save me!"
"Don't worry! I'll show you a way out and make sure that you and your daughter come to no harm."
Qing Mo helped Master Ren to his feet and told him what to do.
"First, prepare a meal for me as thanks for saving you last night. Second, immediately inform Uncle Nine and tell him that you were attacked by a zombie last night, but don't mention my existence for now. Uncle Nine will help you survive this ordeal."
"Alright, alright. I'll have them prepare food right away, then I'll personally go speak with Uncle Nine."
While Qing Mo stayed at the Ren residence eating and drinking to his heart's content, Master Ren rushed at full speed toward the Public Mortuary. The instant he saw Uncle Nine, his sense of security returned in full force.
"Uncle Nine, Uncle Nine, save me!"
"Master Ren, I've found a new burial site for your late father. I was just about to visit your residence to discuss it with you in detail!"
"Oh, Uncle Nine, what new burial site? I nearly died at my father's hands last night! He was hopping around, his face was swollen, and his fingers were black and long."
"What...?"
Upon hearing Master Ren's words, Uncle Nine hurried to where Old Master Ren's coffin had been placed. He found the coffin shattered and scattered about, with the corpse nowhere to be seen. Taking everything into account, Uncle Nine immediately concluded that the corpse had transformed. After inspecting the scene, he found that the bottom of the coffin had not touched the Ink-Black Net at all. He just did not know how Master Ren had survived last night, or whether he had been injured by the zombie.
Uncle Nine immediately called over his two disciples and gave them a fierce scolding and beating. Because they had failed to do what he had instructed, they had nearly caused a death. He then apologized to Master Ren.
"Oh, Uncle Nine, is an apology important at a time like this? Hurry and think of something—that's what matters!"
"Rest assured, Master Ren. It is the duty of those who cultivate the Dao. A zombie will harm its blood relatives first. It will definitely come for you again tonight. Return to the Ren residence and wait. I'll prepare what we need right away, and tonight we'll wait for the rabbit by the tree stump."
"Alright, alright, Uncle Nine. We're counting on you!"
Hearing Uncle Nine say that, Master Ren felt somewhat relieved. Thinking of the immortal at home, he decided that if things truly went wrong tonight, he could only ask the immortal to act in person.
At nightfall, Uncle Nine brought his equipment and disciples to wait at the Ren residence. The entire town had fallen silent; not even a dog could be heard barking. After returning home, Master Ren had lavished Qing Mo with praise and promised a generous reward if he would step in at a critical moment.
Sensing the corpse aura drawing closer, Qing Mo knew that tonight's main character was about to arrive.
"Qiusheng, Wencai, be careful. It's here."
In the distance, a hopping figure slowly appeared before everyone. It was Old Master Ren, who had already become a zombie!
The zombie shoved down the large iron gate at the entrance with one hand. It could smell the blood energy of its son and granddaughter, an irresistible temptation to it.
At the sight, Ren Tingting immediately hid in Master Ren's arms. Though it was not the first time Master Ren had seen it, his legs still shook uncontrollably with fear.
Uncle Nine rushed forward in a few swift strides, choosing to strike first and coordinate with his disciples. Yet in Qing Mo's eyes, Old Master Ren seemed somewhat different. These three would have had no trouble dealing with a zombie that had only just broken from its coffin and had not consumed the blood of its relatives. But Qing Mo sensed an extremely faint force within the zombie. It was likely something the will of the world had instinctively bestowed upon it. It seemed that by saving Master Ren, who should have died, he had indirectly changed Old Master Ren as well.
Several dozen minutes later, Uncle Nine and his disciples were gradually running out of stamina, while the zombie would never feel fatigue. After injuring Uncle Nine and the others, it turned and charged toward the Ren father and daughter, who had been watching the battle.
"Daughter, come with me! Let's go to the immortal. He can protect our lives!"
"Father, what immortal is there?"
Master Ren had no time to explain to his daughter. He grabbed Ren Tingting and ran with all his strength toward the room where Qing Mo was. Old Master Ren chased relentlessly behind them and was about to catch up to the father and daughter!
"Immortal, save us!"
"Don't worry. I said I would save you."
Master Ren brought his daughter, both of them gasping for breath, before Qing Mo. The moment the zombie saw Qing Mo, it sensed that this person was extremely dangerous and could crush it to death at any moment. Qing Mo merely glanced at it, and it instinctively hopped several steps backward.
"Don't worry. You will be eliminated eventually, but I may not be the one to do it."
After saying that, Qing Mo used Uncle Nine's chicken-blood-stained Ink-Black Net to bind the zombie. The zombie cried out in pain and immediately fled. Qing Mo knew it would return, and that it would no longer need to rely on its sense of smell—it could see now as well.
"Thank you, Immortal! Thank you, Immortal!"
"Don't thank me yet. I've discovered some problems that still need to be dealt with!"
