Background / History

Xu Ge arrived in the capital in a caravan from the Northern Plains Wilderness. She told Xiao Jinlan that she came from Northern Defense Pass and had come specifically to win the Nine Provinces Martial Tournament. Despite her athletic build, she carried no recognizable ranked-martial-artist aura and could only answer that she was “I guess” a martial artist. Xiao Jinlan fed her, then personally took her to register for the tournament. 81

She later met Xiao Fan while he was trying to separate Xiao Jinlan from Tong Ye. Xu Ge identified Tong Ye as a “wandering heart” by smelling multiple types of rouge on him, then accepted Xiao Fan’s offer of food in exchange for taking Xiao Jinlan away. This began her food-for-favors arrangement with Xiao Fan. 84

During the tournament, Xu Ge’s wolf-demon identity was exposed in her match against Yao Yuxiang. Although Black-Clad Guards attempted to arrest her afterward, Yang Tong intervened. Xiao Fan subsequently agreed to protect her, and she moved into the Xiao Residence, where her appetite rapidly depleted the household’s food stores. 107 109 110 113

After Xiao Fan’s sister was injured in the competition, Xu Ge confessed that she had attempted to tie her up and take her away to stop her from competing. She had been tricked away by the promise of food, then blamed herself for failing to prevent the incident. 129
