This list was compiled from screenshots of drafts J.K. Rowling revealed during a television interview, then revised by overseas fans after cross-checking against the original books. The names on it belong to students who started at Hogwarts in the same year as Harry:

These forty were merely names Rowling had included in her drafts because she thought she might use them. There were far more than forty students in a single year—reportedly around seventy to eighty. Hufflepuff had the most students, while Slytherin had the fewest. By that estimate, the total student population of the school was between 490 and 560.

Not on the list:

- Gryffindor: Leanne (a character from the original books and Katie Bell's close friend; in Book Six, she nearly prevented Katie from being cursed by the Opal Necklace. The books never specified her year, but the author took the liberty of placing her in Harry's year)

- Slytherin: Meredith Shafiq (one of the author's original main characters)

- Slytherin: Skylar Malfoy (the author's original protagonist of this book)
