Background / History

Xiao Yan was formerly regarded as a rare genius of the Xiao Family, but his cultivation realm began declining for unknown reasons. The regression leaves him depressed and detached from training, while his father Xiao Zhan repeatedly seeks ways to restore him 33 34 35.

He is also a transmigrant from Blue Planet who has lived in the Battle Through the Heavens world for more than a decade. Meeting fellow transmigrant Yun Shenwei gives him a renewed sense of belonging and hope 37.

Yun Shenwei initially presents himself as a benefactor, temporarily boosting Xiao Yan's Dou Qi and selecting him to fight Xiao Ning. Xiao Yan decisively defeats Xiao Ning, revealing the strength restored by the enhancement 36 37 38. Yun Shenwei subsequently secures Xiao Yan's trust, persuades him to surrender his ring by claiming it is harmful, and uses Xiao Yan's recovery as leverage in negotiations with the Xiao Family 39.

Xiao Yan signs a written agreement ending his engagement to Nalan Yanran. In return, Yun Shenwei promises assistance with his cultivation and a future path to Canaan Academy 41 42. He later advances to the Dou Zhe realm and becomes capable of easily defeating both Luo Bu and Ge Ci of Canaan Academy 53 64.

Personality

Xiao Yan is initially self-doubting and dissatisfied with his place in the world, having endured years of declining cultivation and the loss of his former status 35 37. He remains realistic about his weakness when Yun Shenwei chooses him for the match against Xiao Ning, though he respects Yun Shenwei's decision 36.

After his strength begins returning, Xiao Yan becomes determined to train, preserve his family's honor, and avoid disgracing the Xiao Family 40 42 63. He is willing to trust Yun Shenwei because of their shared Blue Planet origin, a trust Yun Shenwei repeatedly exploits 37 39.

Cultivation Regression and Yun Shenwei's Arrival

Xiao Yan's unexplained loss of cultivation draws Yun Shenwei's interest during the Yunlan Sect delegation's visit to Wutan City. Yun Shenwei chooses him as the participant in a challenge against Xiao Ning, setting up Xiao Yan's return to prominence 33 36.

Counterattack Against Xiao Ning

Using temporary Dou Qi enhancement provided by Yun Shenwei, Xiao Yan defeats Xiao Ning in the Xiao Family Martial Arts Arena. The victory convinces Xiao Zhan that Yun Shenwei may truly be able to restore his son 37 38.

Annulment Agreement

Yun Shenwei uses Xiao Yan's need for restored power to pressure the Xiao Family into accepting the annulment of Xiao Yan's engagement to Nalan Yanran. Xiao Yan formally signs the agreement and resolves to work harder for his family 40 41 42.

Canaan Academy Challenge

When Luo Bu insults the Xiao Family, Xiao Yan accepts his challenge and later defeats both Luo Bu and Ge Ci. His performance publicly demonstrates the progress he and the Xiao Family disciples have made 63 64.
