Appearance
Ma Bianlang is a short, prematurely aged-looking man whose unsettling appearance is repeatedly emphasized. Though he appears to be at least forty at first glance, he is Ma Shi's son and is implied to be younger. 32
- Short stature and an uncoordinated, limping gait. 32 33
- Tiny eyes, thin sparse eyebrows, a huge mouth, dark-yellow buck teeth, flared nostrils, and black nose hair. 32
- A pitted, uneven forehead and a venomous, snake-like gaze. 32
- Wears white clothing and black leather gloves for his Gu duel. 40
- His presence becomes markedly more sinister after reclaiming the Seven-Colored Gu. 38 40
Personality
Ma Bianlang is cruel, possessive, and easily driven by humiliation. He refuses to accept Xiao Kunlun's denial of stealing the Seven-Colored Gu, treating the loss of the insect as a personal affront because it was intended as his betrothal gift. 32 33
He uses threats, coercion, and violence to get what he wants. After noticing Xiao Yudao's gender, he plans to seize her as a replacement wife; he also threatens to alter Ma Erlei's sex if no one will marry him. 32 33 When Guo Ni rejects him, he abandons his polite façade, attacks her, and takes back the Seven-Colored Gu. 37 38
Despite his arrogance, Ma Bianlang becomes desperate after Green Nest-Head consumes his Gu insects. He resorts to Qingya Village's dangerous Nine-Colored Divine Gu and enters a Gu duel against Xiao Kunlun to restore his standing. 39 41
Abilities & Skills
Gu Handling
Ma Bianlang raises and deploys venomous Gu insects, though his control is inferior to the threats he invokes.
- Uses a Vine Snake to menace Xiao Kunlun at close range; its venom could blind its target. 33
- Possesses a Five-Colored Demon Moth, which is later consumed by Green Nest-Head. 36 39
- Held the Seven-Colored Gu as Qingya Village's marriage betrothal gift until it was eaten by Green Nest-Head. 32 35 39
- Cannot enter Corpse-Raising Cave, unlike Xiao Kunlun. 37
Nine-Colored Divine Gu
For the Gu duel, Ma Bianlang calls upon Qingya Village's Super Divine Gu, manifested alongside an Eight-Handed Monster-like Gu Spirit. 39 40
- The Nine-Colored Divine Gu is described as a one-in-ten-thousand Gu. 41
- Its Gu Spirit appears as an eerie childlike spirit with hollow eyes, toad-like facial skin, multicolored clothing, and eight arms. 41
- Its cries assault Xiao Kunlun's mind while its poison causes swelling, reddening, and black blood. 41
- Ma Huoxin later states that Ma Bianlang could not properly control it; it displayed only one-third of its strength. 43
- The Nine-Colored Divine Gu is defeated by Xiao Kunlun's Innate Insect. 43

Story Role / Major Arcs
Accusation and Captivity
Ma Bianlang arrives at Qingya Village's ancestral hall while Xiao Kunlun and Ma Erlei are held captive under Ma Shi's authority. He accuses Kunlun of stealing the Seven-Colored Gu, which he considers his indispensable betrothal gift. 32
He privately intimidates the prisoners with his Vine Snake, then reveals his intention to take Xiao Yudao if the missing Gu is not returned. He orders a brazier lit near Kunlun and Ma Erlei, aggravating the Five-Colored Gu inside their bodies. 33
Failed Marriage Alliance
When Guo Ni arrives in bridal robes, she initially mistakes Xiao Kunlun for Ma Bianlang because Kunlun possesses the Seven-Colored Gu. Seeing Ma Bianlang causes her immediate horror and refusal to marry him. 36
Ma Bianlang temporarily behaves courteously toward Guo Ni, but turns violent after she declares that she will marry Xiao Kunlun instead. He strikes her down, seizes the Seven-Colored Gu, and renounces the proposed marriage. 37 38
Gu Duel
After Green Nest-Head consumes his Gu insects, including the Seven-Colored Gu and Five-Colored Demon Moth, Ma Bianlang agrees to a Gu duel with Xiao Kunlun. Desperate to win, he invokes Qingya Village's Nine-Colored Divine Gu. 39
He battles Xiao Kunlun by placing his hand into the jar containing the Three-Corpse Snake Gu while Kunlun endures the Nine-Colored Divine Gu's assault. Ma Bianlang's overconfidence contrasts with Kunlun's determination to protect his companions. 41 The Nine-Colored Divine Gu is ultimately defeated by Kunlun's Innate Insect, allowing Kunlun's group to leave Qingya Village. 43
