Background / History

Kaiju are biological weapons sent through a Wormhole beneath the Pacific Ocean. Their implanted purpose is simple: cross to Earth and destroy everything with all their strength. The limited memories extracted from a Kaiju reveal little about their creators, but suggest they are cultivated in an environment resembling a vast biological laboratory. 368

The first known attack occurs when Axehead reaches San Francisco and destroys part of the Golden Gate Bridge. Conventional firearms, artillery, missiles, and air strikes fail to meaningfully injure it; after it annihilates the Third Fleet and resumes its assault on the city, the United States kills it with a nuclear bomb. 364 366 367 368

Axehead’s death leads to the creation of the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps and the Hunter Project. Subsequent Kaiju corpses become central to research into Kaiju toxins, tracking systems, biology, and the Wormhole itself. 368
