Background / History
Gray leads an urgent Crystal Monster extermination mission into the Whispering Forest, serving as the mages' bodyguard and referee because his fighting style is poorly suited to the monsters' elemental counters. His three-star badge identifies him as one of Colin Town's top adventurers, while Lynn is only a one-star novice. 2
During the mission, Gray is frustrated by the inexperienced mages' poor mana management, but agrees to protect Lynn when Lynn asks for cover while using the concentration spell Frost Ring. He positions himself in front of Lynn with shield raised and tells him to focus on attacking. 3 4
A Mana-Sucking Monster and Vine Demon ambush the party, capturing Gray and several mages. He later escapes, but returns severely injured by a three-star Skin-Rot Vine; he is nevertheless visibly relieved to find Lynn and Elaine alive. 4 8 9
Gray reveals that he takes volunteer missions to restore his “clean status,” despite never violating Yaxia Kingdom law. As an orc, he faces institutional prejudice: he needs citizenship to purchase property in Yaxia and hopes to earn it so he can marry Becky. 9 10
He had previously encountered Elaine's missing friend, Charlotte Fenrir, deep in the Whispering Forest. Gray initially intended to test Elaine's readiness before accepting her commission, but refuses to return to the forest after the escalating incidents there. 10
Later, Gray forcibly enters Lynn's room and attempts to kill him after being mutated by a Soul-Eating Worm. Barton intervenes, identifies the incident as black magic connected to the Corruption Cult, and Magic Association personnel remove Gray from the room. 13 14
