Background

Dugu Yan is Dugu Bo’s only granddaughter and inheritor of the Jade Phosphor Serpent lineage. Its poison arts caused a hereditary backlash: her father died from the curse, while Yan endured bone-piercing cold and poison pain at night without telling her grandfather so that he would not worry. 42

Dugu Bo brings her to Biyou Village at age eleven to seek Lin Ya’s treatment. Initially proud of her talent, she doubts that the younger Lin Ya can heal her and challenges him; his effortless victory reveals their fourteen-rank gap and teaches her humility. 42 43

After accepting Dugu Bo’s decision to entrust the family’s future to her, Yan undergoes a dangerous Self-Cultivation Furnace procedure. Lin Ya uses the Snow-White Swan Kiss and a Demon Skull soul bone to evolve her martial soul, creating the Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor and its inner core. The process establishes her as the Dugu family’s “Ultimate Poison.” 46 47

Appearance

Dugu Yan has short purple hair, purple eyes, and refined features. At twelve, her purple hair is compared to satin and her presence to a beautiful but dangerous poisonous flower; by her reunion with Lin Ya at Heaven Dou Academy, she wears a purple-to-blue dress patterned with silver snake scales. 42 51 110

  • Neat, ear-length purple hair when first introduced. 42
  • Dark-purple hair and slightly upturned glazed almond-shaped eyes at Heaven Dou Academy. 110
  • Her beauty and poisonous aura earn her a “thorny rose” reputation among academy students. 110
  • By age twenty, her youthful features have matured into a fully grown, striking beauty. 278

Personality

Yan begins as competitive, proud, and confident in her own status as a genius. Losing decisively to Lin Ya does not erase her fighting spirit, but it teaches her to recognize superior strength and pursue improvement rather than deny her defeat. 42 43

She is deeply devoted to Dugu Bo and immediately prioritizes curing him after learning that Lin Ya may save their bloodline. During her martial-soul evolution, she endures overwhelming pain rather than disappoint either her grandfather or Lin Ya. 42 47

In relationships, Yan is direct and affectionate. She openly shows her attachment to Lin Ya, from giving him a farewell kiss before academy enrollment to later confessing her feelings and inviting him to spend the night with her on Sea God Island. 52 278

Yan is fearless and sharp-tongued before enemies, though she can be impulsive when she believes someone vulnerable is in danger. Mistaking the Body Sect for child abductors, she confronts them without hesitation, poisons Du Busi in a wager, and flees only after being pursued by five Titled Douluo. 372

Despite her pride, Yan is capable of restraint and trusts Lin Ya’s judgment. At Level 94, she declines to consume another immortal herb immediately, accepting his advice to preserve it for a future attempt to break through from Level 98 to Level 99. 376

In the later era, she remains playful and curious. She eagerly explores Shrek City with Lin Ya and is disappointed that the New Interception Sect has no city of its own. Despite her high cultivation, her childhood illness and long periods of secluded training have left her with comparatively limited experience of ordinary life. 391 392

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor

Yan’s Jade Phosphor Serpent martial soul evolves into the Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor through the Snow-White Swan Kiss, a Demon Skull soul bone, and the Self-Cultivation Furnace. Its poison is recognized as Ultimate Poison. 47

  • Forms a jade-green Serpent Emperor Inner Core, which stores poison, serves as an offensive reserve, and increases her cultivation speed similarly to a soul core. 47
  • Gives her poison arts enough potency that even lower-level skills can threaten Soul Sages and Soul Douluos. 327
  • Her evolved martial soul is the source of her control-oriented fighting style. 165 178
  • By the later era, its Ultimate Poison can overwhelm even Body Sect master Du Busi in a direct poison wager. 372
  • Its poison affinity allows her to feel at home amid the miasma of the Jade Phosphorous Seven Absolute Flowers surrounding the later era’s Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. 371

Jade Phosphor Red Poison: Excitement Poison

Her first soul skill envelops her in crimson poisonous mist and increases both attack and speed by 20%. 43

  • Enhances her physical assault and mobility. 43
  • Can be combined with the Jade Phosphor Serpent’s innate venom. 43
  • Her innate Jade Phosphor Serpent Venom is described as capable of reducing those who contact it to pus within moments. 43

Jade Phosphor Illusion Poison

Yan’s second soul skill is a hallucinatory poison obtained from a five-thousand-year Demon Ray. 178

  • Can distort an opponent’s perceptions within her poisonous mist. 178
  • She uses it against Thunderclap Academy to make Yu Xiaoming mistake her for Yu Tianxin, allowing her to strike him at close range. 178

Jade Phosphor Purple Poison

Her third soul skill releases poisonous mist for battlefield control and incapacitation. 178

  • Used to disrupt and disable Thunderclap Academy’s entire team while fighting alone. 178
  • Its Ultimate Poison-enhanced form can endanger Soul Sages and Soul Douluos. 327

Jade Phosphor Serpent Net

Yan’s fourth soul skill creates a jade-green poisonous web for battlefield restraint. 206

  • Used to bind Yu Tianheng and restrict his movement during battle. 206
  • Combines physical confinement with the corrosive threat of Ultimate Poison. 206

Bamboo Leaf Green

A Tang Sect secret art that creates venomous, soul-power-formed Bamboo Leaf Greens within her poison mist. 327

  • Attacks multiple targets simultaneously. 327
  • Each construct carries lethal poison; a single bite is stated to be sufficient to deprive even a Titled Douluo of combat ability. 327

Jade Phosphor Bewildering Array

Her sixth soul skill is a hallucinatory poison derived from a sixty-thousand-year devil ray. 327

  • Inflicts the Ethereal Soul-Seizing poison. 327
  • Deepening exposure causes increasingly severe hallucinations; the victim’s body can die while their soul remains trapped in illusion. 327
  • Forces opponents to use defensive skills, hold their breath, and seal their pores to resist poisoning. 327

Jade Phosphor True Body

Yan’s seventh soul skill manifests the true body of the Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor. 373

  • Covers her in emerald scales and greatly heightens her poison-type soul power. 373
  • Surrounds the battlefield with a soul-corroding toxic aura while maximizing her combat presence. 373

Time Imprisonment / Spacetime Imprisonment

Yan’s hundred-thousand-year eighth soul skill is a time-control ability identical in name to Dugu Bo’s eighth soul skill. In the later era, it is referred to as Spacetime Imprisonment. 327 373

  • Freezes targets in place. 340
  • Used to immobilize four Level 89 Spirit Hall Platinum Bishops at once. 340
  • Can freeze everyone below the Titled Douluo realm across a battlefield. 328
  • At full power, freezes space, time, movement, and the circulation of soul power within a hundred-meter area, simultaneously immobilizing four Titled Douluo and their active soul skills. 373

Jade Phosphor Divine Light

Yan’s ninth soul skill unleashes poisonous jade light after her opponents have been locked down. 373

  • Used in conjunction with Spacetime Imprisonment and Ultimate Poison to incapacitate four Titled Douluo in rapid succession. 373
  • Represents the group-annihilation potential of the Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor at the Titled Douluo level. 373
  • Its concentrated toxic light can penetrate protective soul power, physical defenses, and spiritual barriers. 373

Tang Sect Pill Devour

Yan later employs the Tang Sect’s poison technique in lethal combat. 340

  • Used immediately after Time Imprisonment to kill four frozen Platinum Bishops. 340
  • She does not use it against her fellow Upper Root Vessels during sparring, indicating its extreme danger. 327

Equipment

  • Fifty-Thousand-Year Demon Skull — a skull bone originally obtained from a ten-thousand-year Phantom Demon Sea Ghostfish. The Snow-White Swan Kiss elevates it to fifty thousand years; its mental and poison affinity helps Yan endure soul shock and supports her ten-thousand-year third ring. 47 110
  • Devouring Pouch — a soul-tool pouch gifted by Lin Ya that can contain living beings. 43
  • Three Treasure Beads — a self-repairing Level 4 protective soul tool. Its beads block attacks and repair one another; it can provide protection unless strikes above Level 50 destroy it three times in quick succession. 52
  • Level 4 flying soul tool and soul-tool pistol — farewell gifts from Lin Ya before she leaves for Heaven Dou Royal Academy. 52
  • Eight Spider Lances — deployed during the Sea God Island Evil Orca hunt. They inject Ultimate Poison into prey, absorb bodily energy, and can improve in quality through that absorption. 279
  • Death Spider Emperor arm bones — poison-compatible bones from Bibi Dong’s confiscated divine soul-bone set that Lin Ya offers Yan in the later era; their absorption is not confirmed. 392

Relationships

  • Dugu Bo — Her grandfather and closest family. He seeks a cure for their hereditary poison curse, entrusts her evolution to Lin Ya, and is overjoyed when she surpasses him in potential. 42 47 306
  • Lin Ya — Her benefactor, mentor, childhood friend, and romantic partner. He evolves her martial soul, supports her cultivation, invites her onto his tournament team, and reciprocates her feelings on Sea God Island. 47 110 278 Yan remains deeply attached to him in the later era and intends to bear his heir. 392 394 He praises her breakthrough to Level 95. 407
  • Shui Binger — Fellow Upper Root Vessel and teammate; Yan fights alongside her during the battle against Yao Zi’s group. 121 327 Their cultivation levels remain a source of friendly competition: Yan regains the lead at Level 95, though Lin Ya expects Binger may soon surpass her. 407
  • Huo Wu — Fellow Upper Root Vessel and teammate; Huo Wu’s jealousy toward Yan is noted after the vessels’ return to the New Interception Sect. 306
  • Yao Zi — Fellow Upper Root Vessel and a respected battlefield rival during their internal confrontation; Yan counters Yao Zi’s flame-and-thorn control with her poison arts and Time Imprisonment. 327
  • Du Busi — The Body Sect master whom Yan poisons after mistaking his sect’s conduct for an attempted child abduction. Their confrontation begins as a poison wager and develops into a wider misunderstanding with the Body Sect. 372 374
  • Golden Body Douluo — The Level 96 Body Sect vice sect master who resists Yan’s Spacetime Imprisonment and forces her into a disadvantage before Lin Ya intervenes. 373 374
  • Little Snow Maiden — Travels with Yan and Lin Ya in the later era and accompanies them to the Continental Advanced Soul Master Tournament in Star Luo City. 392 398

Story Role

Heaven Dou Academy and Tournament

After establishing herself at Biyou Village, Yan enrolls at Heaven Dou Royal Academy at age twelve. Her Level 27 soul power makes her an exceptional young talent, though she measures herself against Lin Ya rather than treating herself as unmatched. 51

When Lin Ya arrives at the academy, Yan reveals her Level 37 strength and ten-thousand-year third soul ring before accepting his invitation to join his Soul Master Tournament team. 110

As Heaven Dou Academy’s vice captain, she is a central controller in the tournament lineup. She defeats Thunderclap Academy’s seven members alone with Jade Phosphor Purple Poison and related poison arts. 165 178

Upper Root Vessels

Yan becomes one of the Upper Root Vessels and completes Sea God Island’s Top-tier Seven Trials. By age twenty-one, she returns to the New Interception Sect as a Level 84 Soul Douluo with a hundred-thousand-year eighth ring. 233 306

During the clash with Yao Zi’s side, Yan demonstrates the breadth of her control abilities: poison mist, Bamboo Leaf Green, Jade Phosphor Bewildering Array, and Time Imprisonment. 327

Conflict with Spirit Hall

Yan faces four Level 89 Spirit Hall Platinum Bishops after recognizing that Heaven Dou’s side remains outnumbered by high-level opponents. She freezes all four with Time Imprisonment, then uses Tang Sect Pill Devour to kill them instantly. 340

Body Sect Incident

After becoming the Level 94 Jade Phosphorous Douluo, Yan encounters the Body Sect while traveling in the later era. Believing that its members are mistreating a child, she challenges Du Busi and poisons the Rank 98 Body Sect master after he voluntarily accepts a contest of poison. 372

Pursued by the Body Sect’s vice sect master and four elders, Yan activates Jade Phosphor True Body and uses Spacetime Imprisonment followed by Jade Phosphor Divine Light to incapacitate four Titled Douluo. The Level 96 Golden Body Douluo withstands the full lockdown and overpowers her until Lin Ya defeats him with a glance. 373

After Lin Ya clarifies the misunderstanding and purges the poison from the Body Sect members, Yan proudly recounts her actions to him. 374

Later Era

Yan continues accompanying Lin Ya through the later era, though she remains conscious of the widening cultivation gap after Shui Binger reaches Level 95. She resolves to cultivate harder while prioritizing time with Lin Ya. 392 394

In Shrek City, Yan draws Lin Ya to the Treasure Gathering Pavilion’s Treasure Appreciation Fair. When attendants refuse them entry without an invitation, she reveals her nine soul rings; the attendants immediately admit their group. At the fair, Lin Ya offers her poison-compatible arm bones from Bibi Dong’s Death Spider Emperor set. 391 392

Yan later watches the Continental Advanced Soul Master Tournament in Star Luo City with Lin Ya and the Little Snow Maiden. She worries that Xue Beng’s leadership of the Dou Ling side may embarrass the empire. After a year of cultivation, she reaches Level 95 and celebrates regaining her lead among the Upper Root Vessels. 398 407
