Background / History

Zhao Yunniang was an uninitiated, “pure” courtesan of Moonwatch Tower. Han Sui redeemed her and sent her to the Imperial Prison to marry the condemned Xu Xing and bear him an heir. Although the arrangement was presented as consideration for a colleague, Xu Xing suspected that Han intended their intercourse—and the Musk Dragon Powder provided with it—to drain Xu Xing's vitality and ensure his death before any reversal of his case. 1

She married Xu Xing in a prison-cell wedding. Other convicted officials treated her as a disposable concubine because of her background, but Xu Xing publicly declared that if she bore his child, she would become his principal wife after his death. His defense changed how she viewed him, and the pair consummated the marriage that night. 2

Yunniang later brought Xu Xing food and left silver to improve his treatment in prison, apparently using her own savings. She informed him of the general amnesty connected to Princess Anren's wedding and Han Sui's stated intention to seek a commutation of Xu Xing's sentence. 5 9 Xu Xing nevertheless remained suspicious that she was acting for Han Sui, particularly when she continued bringing food and wine containing Musk Dragon Powder. 10

After Xu Xing revealed that he could purge the poison with martial cultivation, Yunniang understood that her failure to kill him would place her at Han Sui's mercy. Xu Xing used this danger to force a choice: remain loyal to Han Sui and risk punishment, or side with him for her own survival and that of her unborn child. 20 21

She accepted Xu Xing's offer of a glassmaking method, memorized it, and used it to explain Xu Xing's continued survival to Han Sui. She also bribed Old Li for access to a secret prison passage, allowing her to leave without being searched by Night Patrol Directorate officers. 21 Though she later urged Han Sui to kill Xu Xing and still formally addressed him as her lord, Han Sui concluded that she had changed allegiance. 28

When Xu Xing prepared his escape, Yunniang conveyed his conditions to Han Sui: their child was to bear Xu Xing's surname, funds and a Jiangnan residence were to be placed under the child's name, and she was to remain chaste. Han Sui accepted and increased the silver grant to 1,000 taels. 35 After delivering the glass formula, she left the capital ahead of Xu Xing. Han Sui deliberately misled the Night Patrol Directorate about her route, enabling her escape toward Jiangnan. 36 37 38

After reaching Four Brightness Mountain, Xu Xing asked Yao Dang to locate Yunniang rather than accept other women, citing both his promise to her and her pregnancy. Yao Dang assigned Eyeless Wraith to seek news of her. 48
