Background / History

Chang Ji came from a Chang Clan military family that had produced generals for generations. He became a fifth-rank general, but was imprisoned after avoiding battle during the Tartar invasion in the seventeenth year of Chongming. He maintained that his decision had been forced by insufficient troops and strength, and that he later cooperated with the imperial army against the invaders. Nonetheless, the Chongming Emperor confined him in the Celestial Prison for nearly three years. 5 15

Despite starvation-level prison rations, Chang Ji survived through the Rock Heart Method, an inherited Chang Clan internal cultivation art that lets him refine an exceptionally high proportion of the essence and qi from food. 15 16

Xu Xing began cultivating Chang Ji’s goodwill by sharing food with him. Chang Ji repaid him with the Rock Heart Method, though he later sought a price for further cultivation guidance. Their initially guarded relationship developed into an alliance based on their shared imprisonment and need to escape. 5 6 15 16 21

Xu Xing arranged for Four Brightness Mountain to rescue Chang Ji in exchange for his service. After their escape, Chang Ji attached himself to Xu Xing, recognizing that the two former court officials needed each other to establish a position among the stronghold’s local factions. 32 35 40

At Four Brightness Mountain, Xu Xing recommended Chang Ji to command two banner divisions. Mourning Heaven King Yao Dang declined to grant him immediate command, instead ordering him to recover from his years of imprisonment and travel before serving the stronghold. 45 46

His resentment toward the Chongming Emperor runs deep. Although he performs gestures of loyalty when guards may be listening, he openly dismisses claims that the emperor will restore his innocence. 15 16

Chang Ji is also pragmatic about power. He understands that his former rank and military experience make Four Brightness Mountain wary of him, and he chooses to rely on Xu Xing rather than attempt to stand alone among the stronghold’s established leadership. 40 46
