[Captain Jacks Pailuo]
Du Wei took over the captain's cabin... and the two female mages did something that, in the pirates' eyes, was such outrageous luxury it made them want to curse...
They took a bath!
On a sea voyage, how much fresh water could there be aboard? It was only enough for drinking! Where would there be any extra water for anything else? Who on the ship, captain included, wasn't filthy? Going ten days or half a month without bathing was perfectly routine!
Yet these two women, amid everyone's sighs, squandered a full four huge barrels of fresh water!
Du Wei did not object. His reasoning was simple. "The fresh water aboard was stocked for the original number of people... Now there are more than twenty fewer people on the ship. Even if we waste some water, we won't have to worry about running out later."
He also understood that the girls' desire for a bath had reached the point where it was hard to suppress!
Even Du Wei himself, after so many days without bathing, felt itchy and miserable all over. And after being soaked in seawater several times... seawater was salty, and after soaking in it, his body felt dry and rough!
While the two female mages bathed, he had matters of his own to attend to.
That Captain Jacks Pailuo stood before Du Wei... This poor fellow had not only had his name changed by Du Wei, but even his entire outfit had now been turned into something utterly bizarre!
A red headscarf was wrapped around his head, his beard had been tied up by Du Wei, and deep eyeshadow had been painted around his eyes—using charcoal from the ship. Then there were the clothes: shirt, vest, boots. Since this world had no firearms, Du Wei could only let that part go.
Then Du Wei had the man strike several poses...
It had to be said that one of the traits of Captain Jack in that famous Pirates of the Caribbean film from Du Wei's previous life was, in fact... a certain effeminacy! He spoke in a strange, slightly affected tone, yet was brimming with charm!
After the man Du Wei had chosen reluctantly struck several effeminate poses, Du Wei was already quite satisfied.
While Du Wei happily played at live-action cosplay, the two female mages were thoroughly enjoying the pleasures of bathing in another room.
The pirates on the ship, meanwhile, had fallen into an awkward predicament.
Because the young nobleman who had captured them demanded... that they immediately change course for the nearest harbor!
The ship's captain, first mate, second mate, and boatswain had all been kicked into the sea during the battle by that terrifying woman...
Among the remaining pirates, the one who had formerly held the highest rank... was the cook, the ship's galley hand.
And this cook happened to be the father of the Captain Jacks Pailuo chosen by Du Wei.
While the poor pirates were still worrying over their future fate... although that young noble spoke nicely enough, who knew whether they would be seized and hanged the moment they went ashore?
"Why don't we fight them?" a gold-toothed man suggested tentatively. "There are only three of them! We can block the room and set a fire..."
The others looked at one another... then all stared at the man who had made the suggestion as if he were an idiot.
That woman was practically a she-beast! One kick from her could break a man's bones; one kick could send a burly man flying more than ten meters! Damn it! Did he think a fire could burn her to death?
Block the door? Couldn't she just kick through the wall and charge out?
The so-called rooms on the ship... were merely divided off by thin wooden boards!
Just as everyone was talking over one another, the door opened.
Captain Jacks Pailuo, looking completely renewed, strode in... His expression was somewhat awkward. The pirates took one look at their new captain, and someone immediately let out a long whistle. "Oh, look! Our captain!"
"Hahaha... Captain Jack... you look so pretty!"
"Yeah! Like a rooster in heat! Hahaha, even flashier than those whores at Walker Port! Hahahaha..."
Captain Jack's face was a little awkward, but he quickly coughed several times... He was the captain now! Straightening his back, he walked to the table and said with a touch of anger, "Shut up, mates! If anyone says one more word, I'll stuff my hat into his mouth! I swear I'll do it!"
"Oh, look, our captain's angry!"
"Hahahahahaha..."
It seemed Captain Jack had yet to establish any authority among the pirates... After all, he had been "promoted on the battlefield" by little Du Wei.
"Enough! Quiet!" a hoarse voice shouted.
It was the ship's cook. With the captain, first mate, second mate, boatswain, and the rest all dead—or rather, gods bless them, although they had merely been thrown into the sea, with no food or water and only two broken little boats, who would believe those fellows could survive on the vast ocean?—the cook was now the highest-ranking pirate aboard.
The cook seemed quite willing to stand up for his son. "Shut up, all of you! What good does mocking my son do you? All right, come here, son. I know you're in a difficult position too. Now all our fates depend on you fighting for us! You're the captain now!"
Captain Jack looked at his old man and nodded... He was still young, and had not yet picked up the bad habits of these old, slippery sea dogs.
Though he was a pirate, his heart was still filled with passion for adventures upon the sea.
The young man took a thick roll of cloth from his waist. "This is... what he just drew."
"He? Who? That young noble? That little brat?" a pirate laughed.
Jack's expression darkened slightly. Looking at the pirate, he said softly, "Old Bill. Listen to me! If you want to die, then keep calling him that! When he throws you into the sea, I absolutely will not plead for you!"
"We are all pirates! So am I! So is my father! But are we supposed to be pirates for our whole lives?" The young man lifted his head and looked at everyone.
"We all know that one day, we will die on this damned sea! One day, it will definitely happen! Either we'll die in a storm, or be sunk by the Imperial Navy, or captured by them and hanged at the docks! Our corpses will be pecked at by crows and seabirds, baked dry by the sun! We'll hang there like slabs of cured meat for months! This is the final fate of us pirates, my brothers!"
"I love the sea, and I love adventures at sea... But I don't think being a pirate for a lifetime is the best choice... if we have other choices! Listen, my brothers, this young nobleman of ours is a man of distinguished status—I can see that much! Listen, this is our chance! We can cast off our identities as pirates and openly become members of his fleet! We can continue sailing the seas... only with a different identity... a noble's private fleet! No Imperial Navy will chase us all over the place with their noses at our heels! No one will hang us at the docks again! All we need to do is change into different clothes—cleaner clothes, finer clothes, more marvelous clothes—and then we might even sling arms around the shoulders of those hateful Imperial Navy men, drink with them, and perhaps even demand that they escort and protect us... Look, isn't that wonderful?"
Someone raised a question. "But... if we stop being pirates, what will we eat and drink? Where will the money come from?"
Captain Jack did not answer directly—indeed, he did not know himself. But he revealed one thing. "Did you see those two girls? Just now, guess what I saw?"
"You saw them bathing? Hahaha, your eyes sure had a fine feast..." The gold-toothed man was still laughing without restraint.
Bang!
Before he could finish, Captain Jack had already leaped over and punched his nose flat into his face!
The poor bastard let out a scream, then clutched his nose with one hand and howled while pulling the dagger from his waist with the other, ready to fight Jack to the death!
"You idiot! I told you, if you dared say that again, I'd kill you! You bastard! If that woman heard words like that from you, you'd drag all of us down with you!" A flash of killing intent crossed Jack's face!
The pirates all watched the man whose nose had been smashed flat... No one pitied him, and no one was willing to help him.
Because they all felt Jack was right. If this foul-mouthed bastard offended that terrifying woman, he could only drag everyone down with him!
Or... tossing him into the sea tonight might be a good choice...
Captain Jack stepped forward and drove a knee into his face, knocking him out at once. Then the young man turned around. "All right, back to what we were talking about! Can you guess what I saw?"
No one spoke.
"Magic!" Captain Jack said in a low voice. "It was magic! Those two girls are both mages! Damn it! We're dealing with mages... and two of them at that!"
The crowd let out a gasp!
The awe people had long held for mages now gained the upper hand. No one dared speak disrespectfully again!
"I saw it with my own eyes. Those two girls used magic to kindle flames and dry their clothes in the room... Perhaps they thought our hands were dirty, so they did it themselves." Captain Jack said quietly, "Our little noble lord deliberately let me see that. I understand it very well. It was a warning, and you should understand too. Mages are not ordinary people! They could slaughter us all whenever they pleased! Especially that terrifying woman—she isn't just a mage, she's also a formidable warrior!"
"It's still the same question... Captain, what do we gain by pledging loyalty to this little noble? What will we eat and drink? Will he support us? I don't understand—other than being pirates, what else can we do?"
Though the question was still sharp, their tone was clearly far more respectful. They had even begun calling him "Captain."
"I don't know," Captain Jack replied. "But one thing is certain. First, don't forget that we saved his life! We hauled him out of the sea. He owes us that favor. As long as we obediently follow orders, he won't make things difficult for us, and he'll certainly be willing to give us some benefits. As for the second point... two mages! My brothers, have you ever heard of mages lacking money?"
Everyone was reassured!
Especially by the second point.
Would mages lack money?
For a long time, in ordinary people's eyes, mages had been the very symbol of wealth! Wherever they went, they received the finest treatment. Great numbers of nobles and powerful men were willing to offer up riches to please them or win them over.
Would mages lack money? What a joke!
And so, Captain Jack dispelled the last trace of resistance in every pirate's heart. Then he unfurled the roll of cloth. "This is what that little noble just drew... our new flag."
