Background / History
Du Wei was born into the military Roland Family as Count Raymond’s eldest son. As a toddler, he was unusually self-sufficient, quiet, and observant, but his inability to speak caused his family and the Imperial Capital’s noble circles to label him an “idiot.” After a serious illness at age three, he first spoke the name of Made, who became his personal attendant. 2 3
Count Raymond attempted to prepare Du Wei for the family’s military legacy, but Alpha found him physically frail and unsuitable for martial training. He was subsequently educated by the Imperial Astrologer Rosiat, learning to write at four; Rosiat later resigned after Du Wei’s unsettlingly mature comments on imperial power. 3 4
Although Du Wei possessed exceptional spiritual power, Mage Clark found that he could not sense magical elements. Clark recommended potioncraft instead, and Du Wei devoted himself to magical pharmacology and study. 5 6 7
At thirteen, after his younger brother Gabri became the favored prospective heir, Du Wei was sent from the Imperial Capital to the family territory in Kote Province under the pretense of overseeing its businesses. Du Wei understood this assignment as exile. 7
On the journey, he defeated and captured an adventuring party, then accepted its leader, Ruolin Moon, as his first honorary knight. At the ancestral estate, he began reviewing family finances, established a woodland laboratory, recruited the captured mage Solskja as a magical adviser, and pursued independent research. 9 13 15 19 21
Following the Half-Horn City incident, Du Wei was stranded on a mysterious island with the mage sisters Vivian and Joanna. There he encountered Chris, servant of the “Demon,” and ultimately made a bargain for the ability to sense magical elements. After returning home, Du Wei cast his first spell and released Semel from an oil painting. 31 36 39 40 47
Appearance
Du Wei is a tall but slender teenage noble with the Roland Family’s distinctive red hair. His weak constitution and pale complexion give him a scholarly, frail appearance rather than the martial bearing expected of his family. 8 22
- Pale-faced, fair, and quiet. 8
- Slender build despite being fairly tall. 8
- Usually carries or reads thick books. 8 13
- Often wears refined noble attire, including lace at the collar and cuffs. 8
- Gains a horn after his bargain with Chris; it enables his magical-element sensitivity. 47
Personality
Du Wei is detached, analytical, and intensely curious about magic. Having retained memories from another life, he initially feels disconnected from his new world and considers magic the only subject capable of giving him a purpose. 6 10
He is willing to use coercion, manipulation, and intimidation when pursuing knowledge or advantage, as seen in his capture and interrogation of Solskja and his negotiation with Vivian. 10 20 26 However, he also displays practical compassion: he carries the injured Vivian, protects her from cold, rescues Joanna from an iceberg, and pushes both sisters to cooperate for survival. 32 33 34 36
Du Wei prefers being underestimated. He conceals his intelligence, secretly helped educate Gabri, and sees this as partial compensation for inhabiting the Roland Family’s eldest son. 12
