Lin Chen spent ten years training in martial arts at Chen Martial Arts Hall under Uncle Chen. When encouraged to seek experience beyond the hall, he registered for the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament as an independent martial artist; Uncle Chen paid his registration fee and expected him to return afterward to help repair the hall's leaking roof. 1

He passed the tournament's strength, speed, and aura examinations. Although his measured speed was unremarkable and his aura only dim white, his physical condition was judged sufficient to compete. He was assigned Iwata Go, a previous top-eight finisher, in his opening match. 1
