Background / History

Ginyu commanded the Ginyu Force, Frieza's elite unit. Years before the Namek conflict, the Force was assigned to hunt An Xiu after he repeatedly attacked the Frieza Force and refused recruitment. The encounter ended in a crushing defeat for the squad: all members but Ginyu were seriously injured, and An Xiu took one of their medium-sized spacecraft. The incident left the other members deeply fearful of fighters resembling An Xiu. 8

On Namek, Ginyu led his Force to investigate Goku's group under Frieza's orders. When Goku demonstrated power beyond the limits of their scouters, Ginyu recognized the opportunity to acquire an exceptional body and deceived him into lowering his guard. He wounded himself, then used his signature technique to exchange bodies with Goku. 7 8

Appearance

While in his original body, Ginyu is one of five aliens wearing Frieza Force combat uniforms. After his body exchange, he appears in Son Goku's body; later, he manifests Super Saiyan traits while occupying it. 7 8 12

Personality

Ginyu is theatrical and arrogant, publicly leading his squad's elaborate poses and joining their mockery of weaker-looking opponents. 7 He is also calculating: rather than directly confronting Goku after witnessing his hidden power, he proposes a condition designed to distract him and creates an opening for his body-change technique. 8

He is fiercely loyal and deferential to Frieza, immediately kneeling and formally reporting after Frieza arrives on Namek. He considers himself responsible for resolving Frieza's problems and asks permission to personally fight An Xiu. 13 His confidence grows into open contempt after gaining Goku's body and Super Saiyan power, particularly toward Vegeta. 11 12

Namek Conflict

Ginyu arrives on Namek with the Ginyu Force to deliver new scouters to Frieza, recover Dragon Balls, and capture Vegeta. He confronts Goku's group, underestimates their apparent battle powers, then realizes Goku is concealing overwhelming strength. 7 8

He tricks Goku into displaying his power and exploits Goku's distraction to exchange bodies. Although Ginyu gains Goku's body, he struggles to control its full power and abandons the pursuit of Goku's group when Shenron is summoned. 8 10
