Background

Tongtian founded the Interception Sect on the principle of teaching without discrimination, intending to give all beings who sincerely seek the Dao a chance at cultivation. His unwillingness to abandon even violent or demonic disciples later becomes a central weakness in the sect's discipline and reputation 47 157.

As one of Pangu's Three Pure Ones, Tongtian holds deep reverence for Pangu and is profoundly moved when Jiang Yun receives Pangu's inheritance in Pangu Hall. He regards this inheritance as proof that the Interception Sect is Pangu's true orthodox lineage 156 157.

Personality

Tongtian is fiercely protective of his disciples and refuses to sacrifice them merely to preserve himself or his sect. When Jiang Yun offers to lead the Interception Sect through the Investiture of the Gods calamity, Tongtian entrusts him with extraordinary authority rather than retreating from the conflict 47.

His compassion makes him reluctant to punish disciples who commit atrocities. After Jiang Yun argues that such indulgence endangers righteous sect members, Tongtian acknowledges that his mercy has become harmful leniency and authorizes a complete sect cleansing 157.

Despite his status, Tongtian is openly emotional, proud of Jiang Yun's accomplishments, and willing to confront fellow Sages directly when they target his lineage. His conflicts with Taiqing Laozi and Primordial Celestial Worthy ultimately lead him to sever the brotherhood of the Three Pure Ones 78 169.

Recognition of Jiang Yun

Tongtian first notices Jiang Yun after the latter perceives the conspiracy surrounding Holy Mother of Fire Spirit and creates the Heavenly Derivation Art. He praises Jiang Yun's comprehension and declares that Shiji has taken in an exceptional disciple 7.

When Jiang Yun later uncovers the Reincarnation Purple Lotus and Mysterious Yellow Qi, Tongtian immediately conceals the heavenly secrets around Mount Buzhou, enabling Jiang Yun to claim the treasures safely 22.

Protector of the Ancient Star River

Tongtian's Good Corpse Incarnation intervenes when a Peak Quasi-Sage Outer-Realm Heavenly Devil attempts to invade through the Ancient Star River. He reveals that he deliberately allowed the devil to cross so Jiang Yun could obtain its demonic qi, then effortlessly severs the invader's arm and refines it into pure energy for Jiang Yun's Baleful Corpses 35 36.

After Jiang Yun kills Jade Cauldron, Tongtian personally stops Primordial Celestial Worthy from punishing him. He argues that Jade Cauldron's death was karmic retribution for sabotaging the Stellar River Grand Formation and causing a demonic tide 40.

Entrusting the Interception Sect to Jiang Yun

Tongtian warns Jiang Yun not to neglect cultivation realm and Great Dao comprehension in favor of external combat strength. After this admonition, he grants Jiang Yun the Purple Lightning Hammer 45.

With the Investiture of the Gods calamity approaching, Tongtian appoints Jiang Yun Deputy Sect Master for the duration of the tribulation. He loans him the Green Duckweed Sword, grants authority over all Interception Sect disciples, and personally shelters Shiji on Golden Turtle Island 47.

Severing the Three Pure Ones

After Primordial Celestial Worthy and Taiqing Laozi intervene against Jiang Yun, Tongtian condemns their use of Sage seniority against a junior. He declares that the bond of the Three Pure Ones has ended, a Sage oath acknowledged by the Heavenly Dao 78.

Tongtian further swears to exterminate the disciples and lineages of any sect whose Sage attacks Interception Sect members through seniority again, even if doing so destroys the Primordial World 78.

Reforming the Interception Sect

After Jiang Yun returns from Pangu Hall, he asks Tongtian to cleanse the Interception Sect of disciples who murder mortals and use evil cultivation methods. Tongtian admits that he has tolerated such wrongdoing out of hope that his disciples could reform 157.

Convinced that this tolerance threatens the innocent, Tongtian gives Jiang Yun unrestricted power to punish, expel, or purge sect members. Jiang Yun then orders the Immortal Gathering Bell rung to summon the sect's disciples 157.

Defense of the Human Immortal Martial Path

Taiqing personally attempts to destroy Jiang Yun, Chaoge, and Great Shang after Jiang Yun establishes the Human Immortal Martial Path. Tongtian destroys Taiqing's attack and denounces the claim that the martial path “defies heaven” as a pretext for defending Human Sect interests 169.

When Taiqing, Primordial Celestial Worthy, Jieyin, and Zhunti unite against him, Tongtian prepares to fight all four with the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation. He later defeats Taiqing in the Chaos, forcing a major reversal for the Interception Sect 169 174.

After the victory, Tongtian warns Jiang Yun that the Sages will continue plotting against the Human Immortal Martial Path and promises to defend him with the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation 175.
