At the end of the training camp's first month, Nappa arranged a live-combat match for the recruits.
The event was held in an open-air arena west of the Gravity Chamber complex. Bulma had built the arena as a scaled-down version of Kami's Lookout's training grounds. The floor was laid with three layers of composite cushioning panels, while four sensing monitor pillars stood around it, recording each recruit's aura fluctuations, punching speed, and stamina consumption in real time. The stands were filled with recruits' family members. Chi-Chi had come too, with freshly steamed red bean buns in a bamboo basket. This time, though, she had not brought a basket, but three stacked insulated food containers instead, because Nappa had warned her in advance that the recruits would have huge appetites after the sparring matches.
The rules were simple: opponents were chosen by drawing lots, one-on-one; transformations and techniques were unrestricted, but deliberate injury was forbidden. A hit to the torso earned one point, a knockdown earned two, and stepping out of bounds meant defeat. Once the thirty-odd recruits had drawn their lots, the first-round brackets appeared on the holographic screen. Tabu's name was in the third match. His opponent was a Saiyan boy his age, half a head taller and broad-shouldered, who could already maintain Super Saiyan Grade One steadily. When Tabu heard his name, he did not look up. He merely pulled his right hand from his pocket and flexed his fingers twice.
The first match was between two slightly older recruits. They fought steadily and conventionally, alternating punches and kicks while trading ki blasts, until a narrow point difference determined the winner. The second match pitted the ponytailed girl against a Saiyan boy two years her senior. The girl was fast, but the gap in strength was too great.
