Chapter 220: Night and Breakfast
The sky, which had only just darkened into night, suddenly brightened again, turning back into morning.
Ruger and the other two stopped in unison, staring at one another in bewilderment.
Vito signaled to the other two with his eyes, then immediately shut his eyes and tilted his head in a posture of intense listening. Ruger and Layden guarded him from either side. They had said much beside the campfire before, all of it as casual as sipping tea and trading jokes. Yet the succession of sudden incidents had truly bound the three unexpected intruders together, as naturally as the gentlest thread.
Vito opened his eyes, looking slightly surprised.
"From what I heard, the people who stayed behind are talking... those two wizard apprentices," Vito said, looking at them. "They seem to be going after that rabbit... They want to cut open its belly and snatch that golden key."
It was somewhat unexpected, but Ruger immediately thought of something else: that rabbit was actually this weak.
Since those two wizard apprentices dared to make a move, they must have known the rabbit's strength. Even if they failed to seize the key, they would not lose their lives.
From Vito's earlier description, that experimental rabbit had seemed almost immortal, yet its strength was actually inferior to that of a first-ring wizard.
"They won't succeed," Vito suddenly said. "Perhaps they only want to try, or perhaps they were angered by being toyed with by a rabbit, or perhaps they simply want to test how far they can go. They know as well that this rabbit isn't something they can kill..."
Besides, that rabbit was no fool either, Ruger thought.
The three exchanged glances. No words were needed as they set off again.
