Background / History

Ruger begins as a scrawny kobold living alone in the cavern system, avoiding tribal hunts after being bullied and surviving by hunting flesh worms near ravines 1. Even among kobolds he is small and weak, so he relies on caution, stealth, and a staff rather than group strength 1.

His fate changes after obtaining the Black Book, which becomes both a source of meditation knowledge and an intimidating weapon. When three kobolds try to rob him of food, he uses the book to subdue them, killing two and terrifying the survivor 3. His progress draws the attention of Half-Man, a mysterious immobilized figure who claims to have given him the Black Book and later rewards him with a storage pouch containing magical materials and writings 4 5.

Ruger’s early goal is practical and desperate: become a wizard to escape the short lifespan and limitations of kobolds 5. He studies Ka Liu’s diary, learns about wizard paths, and chooses spells based on survival value rather than prestige 6 7.

As he grows stronger, Ruger becomes involved in kobold tribal affairs. He protects Aisijin, works with Old Gold Tooth, interrogates a Red Horn Tribe kobold, and eventually appoints Bald Tooth as king to stabilize the tribe’s position 12 24 25. He later transforms selected kobolds with dragon blood and helps Aisijin and Big Silly Hum pursue fighter marks 66 175.

Beyond the kobold caves, Ruger enters wider wizard society through encounters with Baangte, Lorigo, Green, Old Lunse, Kurt, Mahama, and Wizard Zorn 31 86 140 154 368 405. He gains status as an apprentice Demon Hunter Wizard, participates in demon-related incidents, and is eventually recognized as a Dragonborn Kobold and Demon Hunter Wizard apprentice 319 342 387.

Ruger completes his major transformation in Chapter 434, advancing from wizard apprentice to full-fledged wizard and solidifying the Miserly Demonfall Spell as a first-circle composite spell 434.

Appearance

Ruger is initially a small, scrawny kobold with loose fur, darkvision, and a dog-like body. His later forms include a dragon-blooded kobold body, a covered traveling appearance, and a temporarily altered humanoid-like “small dog-headed man” form affected by the Hourglass of Impermanence 1 227 403 447.

  • Scrawny and malnourished-looking even by kobold standards in his early life 1.
  • Often wears or values practical scavenged clothing, including a grass skirt, storage pouch, and later wizard robes 1 5 30 66.
  • Has notable fur, later spiritually nourished and central to his Fur Shepherd path 163 415 464.
  • Dragon-blooded body grants greater strength and recovery after bloodline transformation 227 458.
  • Uses face coverings in human settlements to conceal unusual features or scars 381 403.

Personality

Ruger is cautious by habit, shaped by years as a weak kobold bullied by his own kind. He treats caution as survival experience rather than cowardice, often hiding, retreating, or pretending to be harmless before acting 17 67.

He is practical and opportunistic. Ruger chooses Foul-Smelling Skin for survival, uses spells in daily life to train them, and takes useful spoils or information whenever risk is acceptable 7 46 409.

He is curious and ambitious, but rarely reckless without calculation. He wants to escape the limits of the kobold bloodline, study the unknown, and keep advancing, while repeatedly weighing costs, compatibility, and long-term consequences 19 170 226 352.

Ruger is also capable of care and loyalty. He protects Aisijin and Big Silly Hum, supports Old Gold Tooth’s transformation, helps his kobolds grow stronger, and promises Kurt protection during their agreement 12 50 175 371.

Abilities & Skills

Wizardry

Ruger advances from rune meditation to wizard apprenticeship, then to full wizard status. His magic is built around compatibility, practical adaptation, and spell modification 6 22 405 434.

  • Learns and uses zero-ring spells including Foul-Smelling Skin, Freezing Ray, Demon Skin Spell, Lesser Sharpness, Divine Object Art, and Spirit Fur Nourishment 7 22 26 154 164.
  • Uses spells outside combat for cooling, travel, scouting considerations, grooming spirit fur, and daily training 22 46 66 207.
  • Studies spell models deeply and modifies Demon Body for improved stability and control 405 406.
  • After advancing, forms a first-circle spell slot and solidifies Miserly Demonfall Spell 434.

Combat Magic

Ruger fights by combining spells, body strength, pets, and psychological pressure.

  • Uses Freezing Ray and Shedding Spell to intimidate and interrogate a Red Horn Tribe kobold 24.
  • Uses Fireball Spells and Smart Bug to defeat Atoners during a mercenary ambush 86.
  • Combines Lesser Sharpness, Foul-Smelling Skin, strengthening effects, and dragon-blooded physical strength in close combat 226 227.
  • Uses Miserly Demonfall Spell, gray bullets, Fireball Spell, Nightmare Wings, and Fur Shepherd abilities in battles against first-ring wizards 455 456 457.

Bloodline and Body

Ruger’s body develops from weak kobold to dragon-blooded kobold, giving him much greater physical power and recovery.

  • Dragon-blooded kobold body is strong enough to overpower an apprentice in raw strength when aided by spells 227.
  • Dragon bloodline accelerates injury recovery, allowing him to regenerate into a new kobold form after damage 458.
  • Uses the Bloodline Hourglass Ascension Ritual and Hourglass of Impermanence to dilute kobold bloodline influence and strengthen his dragon bloodline direction 352 436 447.
  • Seeks to move away from the limits and curse of kobold origin without relying on unreliable bloodline stripping 170 233 352.

Fur Shepherd Path

Ruger’s fur becomes a magical foundation through the Fur Shepherd Ascension Ritual, Spirit Fur Nourishment, and later divine/spiritual manipulation.

  • Meets the Fur Shepherd ritual’s fur-coverage and spiritual aptitude requirements 163.
  • Uses Spirit Fur Nourishment for long-term spirit-awakening effects on fur 164 207.
  • Can shed fur under control; shed fur remains alive, can grow, and remains under his command 457.
  • Develops spiritually active fur entities such as Stray Hair One and Black Knight 274 377 503.

Faith-Wizard Techniques

Ruger studies the path of faith wizards through Kurt’s notes but keeps his independence and avoids fully committing to its constraints 370 408.

  • Learns that shaped gods serve as vessels and purification tools for faith power 375.
  • Uses Stray Hair One as an unconventional shaped deity / divine creature 377 417.
  • Treats his “god,” believers, and dwellings as internally produced and used, keeping the system low-profile 417.
  • Considers the faith path useful but less compatible with his existing meditation method and personal freedom 370 408.

Leadership and Manipulation

Ruger understands kobold fear, obedience, and power hierarchy, and uses that knowledge to manage weaker kobolds.

  • Intimidates kobolds by making them feel his strength rather than trying to reason with them 24.
  • Appoints Bald Tooth as king and gives him duties to protect the tribe and prove strength 25.
  • Transforms three kobolds with dragon blood to improve their strength and usefulness 66.
  • Supports Aisijin and Big Silly Hum with fighter potions and guidance toward extraordinary marks 175.
