Background / History
Voldemort was born from the Gaunt family line, a branch of Salazar Slytherin's bloodline. His mother used a love potion on a Muggle man, and Voldemort was consequently born deprived of love; his father was a Muggle, making Voldemort a half-blood despite his later pure-blood supremacist rhetoric 225 320.
As Tom Riddle, he became an exceptionally gifted wizard and created multiple Horcruxes in pursuit of immortality. The process fragmented both his soul and magic, but he nevertheless remained powerful enough to contend with Dumbledore. At his peak, he independently developed sophisticated rule-based magic within the cave containing Slytherin's Locket 271 279.
Following the destruction of his original body, Voldemort endured through his Horcruxes. Tver Foley experimented on the diadem and ring fragments, eventually resurrecting the ring fragment in a life-force body. This fragment was renamed Marvolio, bound by an eternal loyalty contract, and implanted with a lethal crystal that Tver could trigger if he disobeyed 88 89.
The original Voldemort later recovered a physical body and began investigating the nature of Horcruxes and Limbo. He located Herpo the Foul's Horcrux, entered Herpo's Limbo, and absorbed Herpo's soul, gaining power at the cost of increasing chaos and instability 294 331 361.
Voldemort ultimately rejected the identity of Tom Riddle, severing his spiritual connection to Marvolio and choosing to exist solely as Voldemort. Marvolio retained the identity, memories, and legacy of Tom Riddle instead 385 401.
Appearance
Voldemort's appearance changed repeatedly with his bodily condition and resurrection methods.
- In his weakened state at Riddle Manor, he possessed a bloody, skeletal body that appeared neither fully human nor ghostlike 282.
- His later restored body was gaunt and pale, typically concealed beneath black robes 497 606.
- His eyes were blood-red, and his speech was often described as hoarse or snake-like 282 497.
- A resurrected younger-bodied incarnation appeared alongside Marvolio; the two were physically identical after the graveyard ritual 400 401.
Personality
Voldemort was intensely proud, ruthless, and obsessed with power, immortality, and control. He regarded the name Tom Riddle—and the attachments and weaknesses it represented—as a burden, deliberately discarding it after separating from Marvolio 401.
He was also calculating and intellectually formidable. His plans used infiltration, traps, Horcrux research, giant Inferi, Dementors, vampires, and psychological warfare. Even when outmatched by Tver, Dumbledore, Grindelwald, and Marvolio, he continued seeking unconventional methods to increase his strength or undermine his enemies 331 497 500 609.
His increasing use of soul absorption made him more unstable, paranoid, and detached from his followers. He routinely killed Death Eaters for perceived disrespect or failure, including Amycus Carrow and another Death Eater who admitted frustration with inactivity 385 528 575. This brutality eventually alienated much of his own force 616.
Abilities & Skills
Horcrux Creation and Soul Magic
Voldemort created multiple Horcruxes, allowing his soul to survive the destruction of his body.
- His known Horcruxes included Marvolo Gaunt's Ring, Ravenclaw's Diadem, Slytherin's Locket, Nagini, a diary, and the fragment inside Harry Potter 78 150 282 346 609.
- Horcrux creation split away portions of both his soul and magical power, though the original body could gradually recover lost magic 271.
- His fragmented souls could possess or manipulate others, as seen with the diary's control over Percy Weasley 150 151.
- His final Horcrux was placed within Hogwarts, granting him influence over the castle's defenses 609.
Soul Absorption
After researching Herpo the Foul and Limbo, Voldemort developed the ability to absorb souls.
- He entered Herpo's Limbo and absorbed Herpo's remaining soul, greatly increasing his power 361.
- He later tested this ability by absorbing Peter Pettigrew's soul 385.
- Absorbed souls carried memories, wills, and resistance that destabilized his mind, worsening his madness 385.
- He sought to absorb the Horcrux in Harry's scar to further increase his soul power 534.
Dark Magic and Combat
Voldemort was one of the era's most dangerous dark wizards, combining destructive magic, transfiguration, and unusual magical theory.
- Created rule-based cave defenses that restricted the brightness of Lumos and imposed other conditions on intruders 279.
- Used the Killing Curse freely and lethally against enemies and followers alike 401 528 575.
- Could transfigure terrain into defensive structures, such as a massive shield formed from turf 622.
- Summoned giant serpents and created destructive large-scale attacks, including a tornado of spikes 623.
- Defeated Madame Maxime's powerful spell with a casual gesture 443.
- Used Polyjuice Potion and layered disguises in an elaborate attempt to deceive Tver and capture Harry 604 606.
Leadership and Manipulation
Voldemort built the Death Eaters through fear, promises of power, and the exploitation of pure-blood interests.
- He encouraged an atmosphere of brutality that pushed followers toward increasingly unscrupulous use of Dark Magic 564.
- His followers' violence spread terror while offering bystanders the hope that submission might spare them 484.
- He recruited giants, Dementors, vampires, and foreign Death Eaters to expand his forces 442 609.
- His leadership deteriorated as paranoia and indiscriminate punishment caused followers to lose faith in him 576 616.
Relationships
- Marvolio — A resurrected Horcrux fragment initially bound to Tver. Voldemort later severed their connection by abandoning Tom Riddle's identity; Marvolio became his ideological and personal opposite 88 385 401.
- Tver Foley — Principal adversary. Tver repeatedly disrupted Voldemort's plans, controlled one of his soul fragments, and ultimately defeated him in their final duel 282 606 623 624.
- Harry Potter — Voldemort's target and the host of one of his Horcruxes. Voldemort used Harry's blood for resurrection and later sought to absorb the soul fragment within him 400 534.
- Peter Pettigrew — Servant and unwilling accomplice. Voldemort depended on Peter during his weakened period, treated him with suspicion and contempt, then used his soul in magical experiments 282 352 385.
- Dumbledore — Longstanding opponent whose magical ability Voldemort considered significant. Their conflict culminated in battle during Voldemort's attack on the Ministry 498.
- Death Eaters — Voldemort's followers, whom he controlled through fear and punished brutally. Their loyalty frayed as he became increasingly unstable 528 575 616.
- Bellatrix Lestrange — One of his most devoted followers; she remained beside him at his death 624.
- Herpo the Foul — Ancient creator of Horcrux magic. Voldemort found and absorbed Herpo's soul in Limbo 361.

Severance from Tom Riddle

War Against the Ministry and Hogwarts
Voldemort directs attacks using giants and Inferi to destroy the Ministry and expose the wizarding world to Muggles.
