When the organism hosting the Collector reached its destination, the battle had already begun... though it was merely the insectoids being attacked one-sidedly by the Kes.

A massive translucent barrier stood between the Kes city and the insect swarm. It looked like evaporated water vapor, bending the light and creating the appearance of trembling air.

But the insectoids proved with their bodies and lives that it only looked that way.

One insectoid combat unit after another charged fearlessly at the translucent barrier. The instant they made contact, an intense flash and electric arcs erupted. Their entire bodies exploded into chunks of flesh, while pale cyan ripples spread outward from the point of contact across the translucent barrier.

Beyond the barrier, Kes soldiers stood atop fortifications and poured bullets into the insectoids on the other side. The bullets passed through the barrier without obstruction, shredding the insectoids beyond it like ragged sacks.

"What principle was this built on? If it was some kind of high-energy plasma shield, there was no reason attacks from inside the shield should be able to pass through and strike insectoid combat units outside."

From its lofty vantage point, the Collector observed the changes in the barrier below, but observation alone could not reveal its secrets.

It tried having its host organism release an electromagnetic pulse. The host released one from time to time on the battlefield to gather information about the combat environment and understand the overall situation, so the Collector's manipulation of its brain would not draw much attention.
