Background
Zhang San was orphaned in the 1980s and sent to Mount Longhu at age four. He became a fellow disciple of Zhang Da, the future Celestial Master, received the sect surname Zhang, and was named Zhang San because he was the third child among his peers to enter the sect. He trained there for more than seven years and became the strongest body cultivator of his generation. 1 2 23
He was sent to Hogwarts as a publicly funded exchange student from the Eastern cultivation world. During the Sorting Ceremony, the Sorting Hat placed him in Gryffindor for his intelligence, diligence, and courage. 1
On his first day, Zhang San publicly exposed Quirinus Quirrell as Voldemort's servant and revealed Voldemort's presence beneath Quirrell's turban. Quirrell immediately killed him with the Killing Curse; Dumbledore disarmed Quirrell, but Voldemort escaped as black mist. 1
Zhang San's soul remained in Hogwarts as a ghost while his unconscious body was sealed in a coffin for return to China. His transformation caused substantial memory loss, including most of his knowledge of the future, but left his memories of his current life intact. 2 3
Zhang Da sent him the Nine Nether Soul Refinement Chapter and the Divine Talisman Heavenly Fragrance Art. The first offered a means to preserve his sanity and cultivate a stronger soul; the second offered survival through faith and incense as a local deity. 2
During the funeral delegation's visit, Zhang Da negotiated with Dumbledore for Zhang San to receive the divine offices of Hogwarts's God of the Land, Mountain God, and Water Warden. The resulting temple gave Zhang San a legitimate foothold in the mortal world and expanded his range to the Forbidden Forest, Black Lake, and nearby hills. 4 5 6
Appearance
As a ghost, Zhang San is a translucent soul body capable of floating, flying, and passing through walls. He generally retains the mannerisms and appearance of an eleven-year-old boy, though his form initially appeared thin and unstable. 2 5
- His ghost body is intangible to ordinary physical attacks. 2 34
- He can emerge from floors and walls rather than using doors. 31
- He can temporarily form a physical body from incense power, though doing so is costly. 12 17
- He may inhabit a jade pendant when traveling long distances. 17 18
Personality
Zhang San is adaptable, practical, and unusually composed for someone killed on his first day of school. He quickly treats ghosthood as a problem to solve: securing cultivation manuals, divine offices, worshippers, income, and methods of obtaining a usable body. 2 4 12 18
He is entrepreneurial and opportunistic. He turns his temple into an incense-funded arcade, sells benefits through a membership-points system, finances student research, and treats the Forbidden Forest's magical materials as potential business resources. 7 9 34 36 44
He is supportive of friends' ambitions and often gives targeted advice rather than indiscriminate aid. He mentors Ron's broom research, helps Neville find a path in Herbology, and encourages Harry to focus on dueling rather than research. 27 33 50
Zhang San's ethics are flexible. He frightens students for negative emotions, possesses Hermione to force her participation in the midnight duel, takes Malfoy's money as “compensation,” and experimentally absorbs emotions directly from Ron and Harry. 5 15 16 47 He nevertheless values balance in cultivation and consciously rejects becoming an evil cultivator. 11 49
Abilities & Skills
Ghost Physiology
Zhang San's complete soul allows him to remain more rational and humanlike than Hogwarts' ordinary ghosts.
- Flies, passes through walls, and ignores conventional physical attacks. 2 34
- Retains all three spiritual souls and seven corporeal souls, unlike the incomplete souls of most Hogwarts ghosts. 21
- Can consume the vital essence of offerings; the remaining food spoils rapidly and becomes tasteless. 7
- Cannot remain far from his usual haunts for long without risking dissipation. 17
- Initially has little direct combat ability and cannot reliably affect material objects without magic, possession, or incense power. 7 10 44
Nine Nether Soul Refinement
Zhang San cultivates the ghost-cultivation method sent by Zhang Da.
- Draws on negative emotions, earthly yin energy, and moonlight essence; all three must remain balanced. 5 11
- Negative emotions increase cultivation, earthly yin stabilizes the soul, and moonlight purifies impurities. 11
- Moonlight tempering is agonizing and caused nightly screams that disturbed Hogwarts. 11 12
- At the Yin Gathering Realm, he can eventually solidify his soul body and learn low-level arts such as Yin Wind Art, Ghostly Blindness, Ghost Wall, and Possession. 10
- Directly absorbing an individual's negative emotions can noticeably improve that person's mood, as demonstrated with Ron and Harry. 47
Incense Divinity
His divine offices allow Zhang San to cultivate through worship and incense offerings.
- Holds the offices of Earth God, Mountain God, and Water Warden for the Hogwarts district. 4 5
- Draws incense power from any consecrated statue dedicated to him. 6 31
- Can instantly travel between his statues, including those in Hogwarts House common rooms. 31
- Uses incense power for attack, defense, support, temporary bodies, and divine arts. 12 17 44
- His shrine's membership-points system greatly expands his worship base across all four Houses. 44
Possession
Zhang San can occupy other bodies to act physically while his own soul body remains weak.
- Possessed Hermione Granger to bypass her objections and duel Draco Malfoy. 15 16
- Can possess small animals with low mental resistance; he specifically sought an animal body after failing to buy a cadaver. 18 20
- Can control Peeves for tasks such as playing cards. 48
- Possession is invasive and leaves the host distressed, as shown by Hermione's reaction. 16
Earth God Authority
As Hogwarts's Earth God, Zhang San can influence plant growth.
- Restored Harry and Ron's dying Dittany during Herbology. 25
- Can accelerate magical plant growth in exchange for prayer and incense offerings. 25
- Earned Hufflepuff worshippers after Professor Sprout placed his idol in the Hufflepuff common room. 25 31
Mountain God Authority
Zhang San exercises authority over the Forbidden Forest.
- Confronted Aragog and the Acromantula colony without fear of their physical attacks. 34
- Collected Acromantula venom as a research resource. 34
- Cursed the Acromantulas' eggs to remain infertile for one year, exhausting his accumulated incense power. 34
- Negotiated with the Unicorn King for twenty unicorn magical horns in exchange for forty young unicorn births. 40
Magic and Transfiguration
Zhang San learns Hogwarts magic with exceptional speed once he obtains a spectral wand.
- Uses a Mount Longhu spirit-bamboo wand with a qilin-whisker core. 22
- Developed a personal Transfiguration incantation after transforming a matchstick into a wooden strip. 22
- Transformed a wooden chair into a leather sofa during his first Transfiguration lesson. 24
- Can cast spells such as Aguamenti and create detailed Transfigured figures. 23 49
- His Transfiguration skill becomes comparable to a fifth-year's after only half a year, though his low ghost-cultivation realm limits the duration of his creations. 49
Martial Arts
Before death, Zhang San was Mount Longhu's strongest body cultivator among his peers.
- Trained in martial arts from age four and mastered the eighteen categories of weapons. 23
- Could withstand ordinary Daoist talismans and spells while circulating his living cultivation. 23
- Lost access to his physical martial strength after becoming a soul body, though he can employ martial techniques while controlling a host body. 4 15
Broom Control and Occult Methods
Zhang San possesses unusual resonance with magical flying brooms and uses Daoist methods in research.
- Can seize control of any flying broom within his sight. 27
- Aided the Broomstick Research Group with occult material selection. 39
- Used a Ghost Compass and the Dragon-Seeking Formula to identify Mount Longhu Giant Bamboo as a suitable broom material. 39
- Helped develop the Black Bamboo Mark I, a broom with handling superior to the Nimbus 2000. 40 42

- He classifies magical proficiency into five levels, from ordinary incantation-and-gesture casting to surpassing one's innate magical-power limit. 33
