Rising and stepping out of the tent, he looked toward the source of the noise and saw several children fighting over the scraps he had left behind. One child had just snatched some when a bigger child, a head taller than him, took it away and casually shoved him to the ground.

The children were so frightened by this that they tried to flee, but Luo Yunji restrained them, leaving them unable to move where they stood.
Under the children's terrified gazes, Luo Yunji washed every dirty hand clean before placing food into them. Looking at the food cradled in their clean hands, some children immediately wolfed it down; some stared in utter disbelief, as though they had yet to wake from a dream; while others wept silently with joy.
