Thirteen-year-old Kubozuka Ryu had grown up in Yae Town, but her life had been nothing but tragedy. Of her thirteen years, only the first three, when her mother was still alive, had been barely tolerable. The remaining ten had been nothing but suffering.
Her father was no good person. He idled around all day, and the household expenses had basically been supported by her mother.
But her mother's salary had not been high, and her father loved to drink, so the family had always lived hand to mouth. And... on top of that, her father often beat her mother. Naturally, he beat Ryu as well.
When she was three, her mother died from overwork... Yet her father did not seem the least bit saddened. He merely complained a few times that no one would be giving him money anymore.
Afterward, her father asked both sets of grandparents for quite a bit of money. Eventually, they stopped giving him any. Left with no choice... he could only go out and find a job himself.
Kubozuka Ryu did not know what kind of job it was... But when she was older, she heard people say that it involved some unscrupulous things. Of course, Ryu had been too young then to understand any of that.
All she knew at the time was that her father had some money and did not let her starve to death. But without her mother around, she had to be even more careful, or her father would beat her again.
By the age of seven, she was already doing housework, cooking... and washing clothes. Her father did nothing around the house. She did it all.
If she did not do it well enough, or if she was too slow, she would be beaten.
