After traveling with Makomo for half an hour, the rain finally stopped completely, but the road was still a mess.
Although this country had been steadily modernizing during the Taisho era, that only applied to the cities. Mountain villages and places like them seemed to have been deliberately forgotten by the government. There was not the slightest sign of change; everything from the Edo period remained.
The roads were the oldest sort of dirt tracks, which turned into muddy slush whenever it rained. Keqing used her invisible power to protect her feet. Thus, even when she stepped into the mud, that invisible force kept it all away.
Otherwise, her legs would have been soaked long ago!
Makomo, unlike Keqing, was not so fortunate. Though she tried to walk through cleaner spots, mud still clung to her trousers.
However, Makomo was long accustomed to all this. Other than getting a little dirty, she felt nothing else.
They walked like that for half the day before finally leaving the wetlands. Once the road dried out... Makomo breathed a sigh of relief. She no longer had to search so carefully for places that were easier to walk through, though the mud all over her body still felt unpleasant.
Of course, it did not matter. When Makomo trained on Mount Sagiri, there had not been a single day when she was not covered in mud. She was already used to it!
Before long, Keqing suddenly heard an odd sound. The source of it... was Makomo's stomach.
"Sorry... sorry!"
Makomo covered her stomach and lowered her head in embarrassment. Her stomach had growled.
But she truly was hungry. They had walked for so long... and she had only eaten a piece of bread that morning, which had long since been digested. In fact, she had
