Directly ahead of central Kyoto, large numbers of Self-Defense Force troops were holding the line. They could no longer worry about collateral damage; they had to stop the approaching monsters.
Under the suppression of countless grenades and other heavy weapons, large numbers of lesser monsters were indeed being blown apart. They might not fear ordinary bullets, but before heavy weaponry, they were still exceptionally fragile.
Watching those monsters die in droves before their eyes, the soldiers' morale soared.
So what if they were yokai?
Even if they could withstand assault-rifle fire, couldn't they still be blown apart by grenades and missiles?
This was no longer the ancient age of cold weapons. Yokai that had seemed unstoppable to the ancients were not necessarily so in the eyes of modern people.
Watching the yokai be blasted to pieces by artillery shells, the soldiers firing them could not have felt more exhilarated!
Yet that joy did not last long. As masses of lesser monsters died, a sudden gale swept through, and a towering figure descended from the sky.
It had a long, high red nose and a red face, wielded a treasure mallet, wore Buddhist beads around its neck, and had a massive build. It wore yamabushi robes, a type of island-nation attire, and a pair of wings grew from its back.
It was the most classic island-nation monster imaginable!
A tengu!
After the tengu appeared, it charged straight at the Self-Defense Force while enduring grenade fire. Braving the bombardment, it appeared before them in the blink of an eye and brutally slapped countless nearby soldiers to death.
The previously mighty heavy weapons were reduced to ashes in an instant!
"Damn it!"
At the remote command center, the leader's face turned livid
