Wang Chong was raised in his mother's ancestral home after the discord between his parents led his mother to leave the capital with him. His mother trained him strictly and hoped that he would bring honor to the family. Though his withdrawn nature made him appear slow-witted, he possessed an extraordinary memory: after reading a text several times, he could recite it fluently. He passed the xiucai examination before entering Egret Academy. 1 8

Despite his mother's reluctance, Wang Chong left home to study. On the road, he faced a ghostly creature and a mysterious black-robed Daoist without losing his composure. His early journey also brought him together with Zhu Ying, whose guidance introduced him to talismans, the Black Wind Bag, and sword cultivation. 2 13

His aptitude for the Five-Terrace Sect's sword arts won Xiao Nan's approval, and he became Xiao Nan's registered disciple at Mystic Mountain. Dao Shan Ancestor later became his grandmaster, placing Wang Chong within an influential Wutai lineage. 20 86
