Background / History
Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan were impoverished street children when Jiraiya encountered and trained them near the end of the Second Great Ninja War. Years later, the three had risen from orphans to the leaders of Amegakure, with the ability to act on their own ideals. 69
He initially follows Yahiko's vision for Akatsuki: peace through mutual understanding and freedom from oppression. Though Nagato possesses the legendary Rinnegan, he is shy and repeatedly rejects Yahiko's suggestion that he should lead the organization. 56 57
Nagato becomes Naruto's training partner and instructor in precise Chakra management. Their sparring demonstrates Nagato's ability to layer and combine multiple elemental techniques, while Naruto learns that efficient Chakra use can outlast brute-force expenditure. 58 59
During Amegakure's assault on Akatsuki, Nagato's attachment to Yahiko and Konan becomes a tactical weakness when Rain ninja take them hostage. He nevertheless summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, kills Naomasa through a puppet while negotiating, and turns the battle against the Rain ninja. 62 63 64
After Hanzō's defeat, Nagato asks Naruto to help overthrow Amegakure so that Akatsuki can end further tragedies more quickly. He publicly assumes Amegakure's leadership, though Yahiko initially handles much of the civilian administration while Nagato oversees military affairs. 64 67 68 74
Later, the use of the Phantom Dragon Nine Seals severely drains Nagato's life force, while explosive tags destroy his lower body and leave him paralyzed from the waist down. Konan remains at his side during a painful leg operation and blames herself for Yahiko's death and Nagato's condition. 104 140
Appearance
Nagato is a red-haired Uzumaki with the purple, concentric-ring Rinnegan associated with the Sage of Six Paths. 57
- His Rinnegan can emit a hazy purple glow after his Chakra is replenished. 65
- Following his injuries, he is described as emaciated and unable to move below the waist. 128 140
- He later operates from elevated positions or through the Six Paths of Pain while conserving his injured main body. 173 187
Personality
Nagato begins as a timid, self-effacing young man who considers Yahiko the rightful leader despite possessing the Rinnegan. He values Yahiko and Konan as family because they saved his life and gave him a place to belong. 57 61
The attack on Akatsuki hardens him. He becomes decisive, capable of rallying survivors, eliminating opposition, and assuming command of Amegakure when he believes hesitation will create more suffering. 64 67
His ideal of peace gradually shifts from Yahiko's mutual-understanding approach toward deterrence through overwhelming force. As Pain, he advocates creating the Ten-Tails as an ultimate weapon that would make the world fear war itself. 126
Nagato is not blindly trusting. He remains wary of the masked Uchiha Madara and Black Zetsu, uses divided work shifts during Tailed Beast extraction to prevent betrayal, and later intends to expend the White Zetsu army before committing his own forces. 187 201 244
Abilities & Skills
Rinnegan
Nagato possesses the legendary Rinnegan, a dojutsu said to have belonged to the Sage of Six Paths. Its appearance marks him as an extraordinary figure even among powerful shinobi. 57
- Uses Shinra Tensei to unleash overwhelming repulsive force against groups or individual opponents. 66 120
- Uses Banshō Ten'in to pull targets or terrain with gravitational force. 66
- Tracks battlefields through the shared vision of his Six Paths bodies. 173
- Gains further Rinnegan power after the Grale Stone replenishes his life force. 174
Six Paths of Pain
Nagato commands six Rinnegan-linked bodies known as the Six Paths of Pain, allowing him to fight through multiple specialized combatants at once. 119 120 173
- Deva Path — employs repulsion, attraction, black rods, and Chibaku Tensei. 120 128
- Animal Path — summons massive creatures, including a three-headed dog, chameleon, and rhinoceros. 119 120
- Asura Path — launches missiles and retrieves damaged Paths. 119 120
- Naraka Path — restores destroyed Paths. 120
- The system's effectiveness is reduced when opponents possess detailed intelligence on each Path's abilities. 173
Chakra Control and Elemental Ninjutsu
Nagato has enormous Chakra reserves and exceptional control, able to sustain precise output longer than Naruto's more forceful approach. 59 65
- Proficient in all Five Elements Release techniques. 72
- Combines Water, Earth, Fire, and Wind Release into layered attacks rather than relying on a single technique. 58
- Can use high-output Water Release even where no water source is available. 63
- Teaches Naruto the value of micro-managing Chakra to prevent needless depletion. 59
Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and Ten-Tails
Nagato can summon and direct the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, using it as both a battlefield weapon and a means of enforcing Akatsuki's power. 62 64
- Uses the statue to pressure Hanzō and reverse Akatsuki's disadvantage against Amegakure. 62 64
- Revives the Ten-Tails and uses it to destroy the Mist Village with a large-scale Tailed Beast Bomb. 243
- Regains control of the Ten-Tails after its initial rampage and employs it against the Allied Shinobi Forces. 244
- Cannot divide the Ten-Tails into nine Tailed Beasts; his Yin-Yang Release mastery is insufficient for that task. 249
Rain Tiger at Will Technique
Nagato infuses Amegakure's rain with his Chakra to detect intruders across the village. 125
- Identifies Naruto's arrival in Amegakure immediately through the rain. 125 126
- Provides large-scale surveillance that makes covert infiltration of the village difficult. 125
Relationships
