In Konoha Year 47, the Third Shinobi World War, ignited by the battle at Kannabi Bridge, entered its second year. Far from subsiding, it spread like a wildfire out of control, sweeping across the entire shinobi world. The five great nations and their affiliated smaller countries were all dragged in, creating an unprecedented free-for-all.
Peace became a distant luxury, while death and destruction became everyday scenery. After the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Hidden Mist Village suffered a devastating blow from Might Duy's "Eight Gates Formation," the Hidden Mist did not retreat.
The Third Mizukage's paranoia and thirst for battle drove him to launch an even more frenzied offensive.
He deployed remnants of the "Yuki Clan," berserkers of the "Kaguya Clan," and large numbers of elites, launching endless landing raids along the southeastern coastline of the Land of Fire. Naval battles and coastal defense battles became exceptionally brutal. Hidden Mist ninjas used foggy weather and complex waterways to appear and vanish like ghosts.
On Konoha's side, Shimura Danzo held command. The members of "Root" under him played an important role in assassination and counter-assassination.
The Inuzuka Clan's sense of smell and the Aburame Clan's insect secret techniques played key roles in defense and reconnaissance. The two sides fought over the coastline again and again, every inch of land soaked in blood. The war sank into a cruel war of attrition.
The Hidden Cloud Village shifted its main force toward the Land of Hot Water, engaging the main troops of Konoha's northern defense line in a frontal decisive battle.
This front became the stage where the top combat forces of both sides collided.
Namikaze Minato and the AB Combo, A plus Killer B, clashed many times on this front in heart-stopping battles. Minato's Flying Thunder God Technique was unpredictable, his Rasengan was immensely powerful, and his tactical mind was unmatched in the shinobi world.
A honed his Lightning Release Chakra Mode to ever greater mastery, constantly raising his speed and strength. Killer B's coordination with the Eight-Tails, Ox-Demon, grew better and better, and his use of tailed beast cloak and Acrobat became even sharper.
In several large-scale battles, Minato repeatedly used the Flying Thunder God Technique for decapitation tactics and tactical division, once heavily damaging the Hidden Cloud's command system.
But the AB Combo had extraordinary resilience. A's absolute defense and frontal assaults, combined with Killer B's tailed beast chakra for area suppression, also caused Minato tremendous trouble.
Both sides won and lost in turn, but neither could do anything to the other. Though Minato could gain a slight upper hand, he still could not completely crush this pair of Hidden Cloud trump cards whose coordination was becoming more seamless by the day.
The cruelty of war far exceeded imagination. In one crucial battle for a fortress, the Hidden Cloud troops fell into a trap meticulously designed by the Hidden Stone and were surrounded layer upon layer by more than ten thousand Hidden Stone ninjas.
To buy time for his subordinates to retreat, the Third Raikage, A, chose to hold the rear alone.
"Go, now! I'll hold them off!" A roared, lightning exploding all over his body.
"Hell Stab: Four-Finger Thrust!" He concentrated Lightning Release chakra into four fingers, unleashed his strongest thrusting technique, and charged straight into the Hidden Stone army formation!
That battle could be called the swan song of a one-man army. Relying on his invincible Lightning Release Armor and powerful Hell Stab, A carved through the Hidden Stone army again and again, single-handedly holding back the Hidden Stone main force for three days and three nights!
According to surviving Stone ninjas, A destroyed several stone fortresses by himself and killed thousands of Stone ninjas. In the end, his chakra and stamina were exhausted, and he died fighting. His corpse stood upright without falling, lightning lingering around him for a long time.
The Third Raikage's tragic death in battle greatly inspired the Hidden Cloud's morale and also intensified the blood feud between the Hidden Cloud and the Hidden Stone.
His son, the future Fourth Raikage, took over command amid grief, and his hatred for the Hidden Stone reached its peak.
The Land of Grass and its surrounding regions completely became the most chaotic and brutal meat grinder of a battlefield. The forces of the Hidden Stone, Konoha, and the Hidden Cloud interlocked there like jagged teeth, locked in endless chaotic warfare.
After their defeat at Kannabi Bridge, the Hidden Stone Village did not give up its ambitions toward the Land of Fire. The Third Tsuchikage, Onoki, continuously reinforced his troops, using his powerful Earth Release corps and numerical advantage to launch fierce attacks on Konoha's defensive line.
On Konoha's side, the defense was mainly commanded by elite jonin such as Nara Shikaku and Akimichi Choza. With Shikaku's superb tactical mind, Choza's powerful destructive force from the Expansion Jutsu, and the Yamanaka Clan's mental communication techniques, they built a sturdy defensive system.
The two sides fought back and forth repeatedly through hills and canyons. Positions changed hands several times, and casualties were extremely heavy.
After the Third Raikage died in battle, the Hidden Cloud poured most of its rage onto the Hidden Stone. The newly appointed Raikage, A, swore revenge, and Hidden Cloud troops frequently took the initiative to attack Hidden Stone positions.
This made the situation on the northwestern battlefield even more complicated. Often, just as Konoha repelled the Hidden Stone, the Hidden Cloud would charge out from the flank to attack the Hidden Stone, or when the Hidden Stone and Hidden Cloud were fighting to the death, Konoha would seize the chance to counterattack.
Three sides fought in chaos, with no trust to speak of. Any two sides could become mortal enemies at any moment, and none of them could achieve a decisive victory. The war became the purest, bloodiest form of attrition.
Just as Konoha was being attacked on three sides and the situation was hanging by a thread, trouble rose again from the southwest.
After recuperating and undergoing an internal shift in power, the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, longed to restore the Hidden Sand's reputation and obtain resources through war.
He saw that Konoha was trapped in the predicament of fighting on multiple fronts, so he joined forces with the leader of the Hidden Rain Village, Hanzo of the Salamander, and launched a surprise attack on the southwestern border of the Land of Fire.
The troops Konoha had left in the direction of the Land of Rain were mainly led by Mimura Hamaki and Uchiha Fugaku. Uchiha Fugaku was transferred to this side. The Hidden Cloud front was instead placed under Namikaze Minato's command.
Fugaku's Sharingan played a tremendous role in the defensive battle. His genjutsu and Fire Release caused the Hidden Sand great trouble.
Although Rasa's Gold Dust Technique was powerful, Fugaku's tactical command and the combat strength of the Uchiha elites could not be underestimated either.
The two sides launched fierce offensive and defensive battles among the ruins and swamps of the Land of Rain. Though the Hidden Sand's offensive was ferocious, they could not break through Konoha's defensive line for the time being.
However, the opening of this new front undoubtedly made Konoha's already overstretched forces even worse.
By the end of Konoha Year 48, the Third Shinobi World War had entered its darkest period.
The Hidden Leaf Village was almost single-handedly fighting the three great ninja villages of the Hidden Cloud, Hidden Stone, and Hidden Mist at the same time, while also having to guard against sneak attacks from the Hidden Sand. It had fallen into the desperate situation of being besieged on all sides.
Every village paid a terrible price. Kage-level powerhouses fell, large numbers of elite ninjas died in battle, small countries were reduced to battlefields, and the people's livelihoods withered.
And yet, under this ultimate pressure, Konoha also displayed astonishing resilience.
Top ninjas such as Namikaze Minato, Uchiha Fugaku, Shimura Danzo, Nara Shikaku, and Akimichi Choza supported the various fronts; the new generation, including Kakashi, Obito, Rin, and Might Guy, also grew rapidly amid blood and fire.
War was like a massive furnace, tempering every survivor. At the same time, in dark corners untouched by the eyes of the shinobi world, a new conspiracy was brewing.
Nalong, who called himself "Madara Uchiha," quietly turned his gaze, with Black Zetsu's assistance, toward the Land of Rain struggling in agony amid the chaos of war, and toward those Rinnegan eyes belonging to Akatsuki's Uzumaki Nagato...
The true hidden hand was preparing to take advantage of this chaotic age and place an even more crucial piece.
