Background / History

Obito participates in the planned destruction of the Uchiha Clan under the name “Madara.” During the massacre, he kills Akane Uchiha to provoke Xuanshi’s Mangekyō Sharingan awakening, dismisses Xuanshi’s attacks through Kamui, and attempts to take Xuanshi’s eye after defeating him 6 7. The operation divides responsibilities among Itachi, Obito, and Danzō’s Root: Obito is assigned to eliminate the Uchiha Police Force’s main strength 12.

When the clan’s souls escape through a space-time rift and leave their bodies and Sharingan hollow, Obito senses that an unknown variable has disrupted the operation 18.

Before Kushina Uzumaki’s delivery, Obito investigates Konoha personally after White Zetsu intelligence goes dark. The Uchiha deliberately deceive him with a performance of drunkenness, despair, and internal collapse; he accepts the deception and concludes that the clan cannot interfere with his plan 39.

He infiltrates Kushina’s delivery site to seize her and the Nine-Tails, but Xuanshi’s shadow clone blinds and delays him long enough for Minato to evacuate Kushina and Naruto 42 43. Obito instead forcibly releases the Nine-Tails near Konoha and controls it to devastate the village 42 44.

His attack fails after the Uchiha Clan, Minato, and Kushina counter the Nine-Tails. Shisui wounds him and breaks part of his mask; Xuanshi publicly exposes his “Madara” persona as fraudulent and turns the Uchiha’s collective chakra against his plans 58 59. The Uchiha sever his control over the Nine-Tails, which turns on him, and the beast is ultimately sealed into an artificial moon 66 70.

Obito attacks Xuanshi in rage rather than retreating, leading Minato, Kakashi, and Xuanshi into the Kamui Dimension. Minato’s Rasengan and Kakashi’s Lightning Cutter leave him catastrophically injured, while Xuanshi severs his Hashirama Cell-based right arm; Black Zetsu extracts him from the battle 71 73 74.

After recovering in the Land of Rain, Obito adopts the identity Tobi, conceals the extent of his injuries from Nagato, and orders Black Zetsu to accelerate the tailed-beast collection 77. He later appears at the Five Kage conflict, claims the name “Madara Uchiha” again, reveals the Infinite Tsukuyomi objective, and declares war on the Five Great Nations 145.

His confidence repeatedly turns into rage when his plans fail. He is humiliated by Xuanshi’s interference, furious at being wounded by Shisui, and becomes reckless after losing control of the Nine-Tails 42 58 66 71.
