Night blanketed Silver City. Neon lights flickered, traffic streamed endlessly, and the streets and alleyways brimmed with the unique clamor and splendor of an urban night. In a dim alley on the outskirts of the city, sirens wailed and blue lights flashed. Dressed in her police uniform, Lin Yue crouched beside a corpse, her brow tightly furrowed and her eyes carrying a police officer's characteristic sharpness and resolve. The victim was a young woman, neatly dressed and without any obvious external injuries. Her face was frozen in terror, as though she had encountered something utterly horrifying before her death.
"Captain Lin, there were no signs of a struggle at the scene, and no valuables were missing. Our preliminary assessment is that this wasn't a robbery homicide," her assistant, Xiao Li, reported from the side.
Lin Yue nodded slightly, her gaze falling on the victim's hand. Her fingers were clenched tightly, as though she had desperately tried to grasp something before she died. Lin Yue carefully pried open the victim's fingers and found a crumpled slip of paper bearing the two words: "Phantom Dream."
"Phantom Dream? What does that mean?" Xiao Li asked doubtfully.
Lin Yue rose to her feet and looked into the distance. "We don't know yet, but it could be a crucial lead. Take the note back and see if we can find anything."
Back at the police station, Lin Yue and Xiao Li began investigating "Phantom Dream." After looking through a great deal of information, they discovered that a virtual reality experience shop called "Phantom Dream Space" had recently opened in the city and was doing exceptionally well. Lin Yue felt there might be a connection and decided to investigate it with Xiao Li.
The next day, the two arrived at the Phantom Dream Space experience shop. The interior was lavishly decorated and brimming with a futuristic feel. Customers wore virtual reality headsets, immersed in all sorts of wondrous virtual worlds.
"Hello, how can I help you?" a clerk greeted them warmly.
Lin Yue showed her credentials. "We're police officers investigating a case. We'd like to learn about your shop."
The clerk's expression changed slightly, but he quickly returned to normal. "Officer, our shop operates legally. Is there some problem?"
"Has anything unusual happened in the shop recently?" Lin Yue asked.
The clerk hesitated before answering, "Actually... a few days ago, a customer seemed mentally disoriented after finishing an experience. They said they saw something terrifying, but after checking the equipment, we didn't find any problems."
Lin Yue and Xiao Li exchanged a glance, feeling that the matter was becoming increasingly strange. They asked to review the shop's surveillance footage. Though reluctant, the clerk cooperated. While reviewing the recordings, Lin Yue discovered that the victim had visited the shop the day before the murder. During her experience, her body had convulsed noticeably, yet the staff had failed to spot it in time.
"Your supervision of customers during their experiences is seriously lacking. You missed such an obvious abnormality," Lin Yue said sternly.
The clerk hurriedly explained, "We usually keep a close watch, but there were too many customers at the time. We may have overlooked it."
Lin Yue did not find his explanation believable and decided to investigate the shop more thoroughly. After several days of covert surveillance and investigation, she discovered that the shop's owner was connected to a mysterious organization that appeared to be conducting illegal human experiments.
"Xiao Li, it looks like we've found the key. This Phantom Dream Space is very likely a front for their experiments," Lin Yue told him.
"Then what do we do now? Arrest them directly?" Xiao Li asked.
"No. We don't have enough evidence yet." Lin Yue pondered for a moment before saying, "I'll experience it myself and see what exactly they're up to."
Xiao Li immediately objected. "Captain Lin, that's too dangerous. What if something happens to you..."
"It's fine. I'll be careful. Only this way can we find the evidence and wipe them all out in one sweep," Lin Yue said firmly.
So Lin Yue disguised herself as a customer and went to Phantom Dream Space. She put on a virtual reality headset and entered a virtual world. At first, everything was normal. She stood in a beautiful garden beneath bright sunshine, surrounded by the fragrance of flowers. But suddenly, the sky darkened. The scenery around her began to twist and distort, horrifying images appearing everywhere. A black shadow kept closing in on her, and she could feel the malice radiating from it.
Lin Yue suppressed her fear and struggled to remain clear-headed. She discovered that this virtual world seemed to contain hidden code and information, which might be the key to uncovering the truth. She focused her mind and tried to crack the code.
Meanwhile, in the experience shop's surveillance room, the owner and several mysterious figures were closely monitoring Lin Yue.
"This woman is no ordinary person. She seems to be cracking our program," one of the mysterious figures said.
"We can't let her succeed. Activate the backup plan," the owner said coldly.
In the virtual world, Lin Yue suddenly felt a powerful force preventing her from cracking the code. Her body also began to feel unwell. But she did not give up. Relying on her tenacious will, she continued resisting the force.
Just as Lin Yue was about to collapse, she suddenly thought of a solution. Using her knowledge of computer technology, she found a loophole in the program and successfully cracked part of the code. It revealed that the mysterious organization was using virtual reality technology to mentally control customers and alter their memories, attempting to create a group of "puppets" who would obey their commands.
Lin Yue was utterly shocked. She immediately sent the information to Xiao Li through a concealed communications device. As soon as Xiao Li received it, he rushed to Phantom Dream Space with backup officers.
"Don't move! Police!" Xiao Li and the officers stormed into the experience shop and subdued the owner and the mysterious figures.
Lin Yue also broke free from the virtual world. Her face was pale, but her gaze remained firm. Looking at the captured owner, she said, "Your scheme will not succeed."
The owner snorted coldly. "You think it's over just because you caught us? This is only the beginning."
Lin Yue ignored him. She and Xiao Li began searching the shop's equipment and materials, hoping to find more evidence. In the basement, they discovered a secret laboratory containing extensive victim files and experimental records.
"Captain Lin, we found it!" Xiao Li said excitedly.
Lin Yue looked at the evidence, her heart filled with anger. She knew this was only the tip of a massive criminal network. They had to organize the evidence as quickly as possible, follow the trail, and destroy the entire organization.
After the police conducted an in-depth investigation and arduous pursuit, they gradually uncovered the true face of the criminal organization. It turned out that an international criminal syndicate supported the organization from behind the scenes. By controlling people's minds, they sought to achieve unspeakable political and economic goals. Phantom Dream Space was merely one of their testing sites in Silver City, and similar experience shops were scattered throughout other cities.
After several months of effort, Lin Yue and her colleagues finally captured all the major members of the criminal organization and destroyed their base. Throughout the operation, Lin Yue became the key figure in solving the case through her intelligence and courage.
However, Lin Yue did not let down her guard because of this. She knew that behind this seemingly peaceful world, countless dark forces were still stirring. She decided to continue investigating other leads connected to the international criminal syndicate and contribute her strength to preserving peace and justice in society.
On a bright, sunny day, Lin Yue stood before the police station window, looking out at the bustling city, her heart filled with a sense of duty. She knew the road ahead was still long and that more challenges awaited her, but she was unafraid. She was a police officer, and protecting the people's safety was her lifelong responsibility.
