A Choice Beneath the Afterglow

Cheng Xin and Ai AA stood inside the small spacecraft that carried humanity's hopes. Through the porthole, they gazed at the Solar System, once so familiar and now devastated beyond recognition. The Trisolarans' dimensional strike had been an irresistible nightmare, twisting the once-vibrant Solar System into a silent two-dimensional painting. The brilliant Sun was now merely an enormous, dim blot of light on a flat plane, while the planets that had once revolved around it had been frozen forever in grotesque stillness within that dreadful dimensional abyss.

"AA, are we really leaving just like this?" Cheng Xin's voice trembled slightly, her eyes full of longing and reluctance. Though she knew that staying would mean facing nothing but despair, leaving the home that had raised her still felt like her heart was being torn apart.

Ai AA gently took Cheng Xin's hand, trying to offer a measure of warmth and strength. "Cheng Xin, this is our only choice. The Solar System is no longer where we belong. We have to seek new hope."

The spacecraft traveled alone through the vast universe, leaving behind the Solar System's realm of death. Cheng Xin and Ai AA embarked on a long, uncertain journey aboard it. Relying on the ship's limited resources, they struggled to sustain themselves. At the same time, they continually searched the cosmos for signals, hoping to find traces of another civilization or a planet suitable for life.

During a routine cosmic ray scan, the ship's detector captured a weak but unusually regular signal. It repeated at fixed intervals, as though some civilization were sending a call into the depths of the universe.

"Cheng Xin, look! Could this be the hope we've been searching for?" Ai AA excitedly pointed at the monitoring screen, her eyes shining with anticipation.

Cheng Xin's heartbeat quickened involuntarily. She hurried to the console and carefully analyzed the signal. After a complex series of calculations and comparisons, she discovered that its source was not far from them. At the spacecraft's speed, they could reach it in only a few months.

"Whatever it is, we have to go and see. This may be our only chance to survive," Cheng Xin said firmly.

The spacecraft adjusted its course and accelerated toward the signal's source. Over the following months, Cheng Xin and Ai AA waited anxiously for their encounter with the unknown signal. They did not know what awaited them ahead—whether it would be a friendly civilization or a new danger.

As the distance steadily shrank, the spacecraft's detection systems gradually gathered more information about the source. To their surprise, it came from a planetary system surrounded by an enormous cloud of dust. One planet in the system had environmental parameters astonishingly similar to Earth's: liquid water, a suitable atmosphere, stable stellar radiation. All these conditions made it seem like a perfect candidate for a new home.

As the spacecraft slowly approached the planet, Cheng Xin and Ai AA saw a beautiful and mysterious world through the porthole. Its surface was covered in vast blue oceans and green landmasses, while clouds drifted slowly through the atmosphere like a vibrant painting.

"This is practically a copy of Earth!" Ai AA exclaimed.

Yet Cheng Xin was not dazzled by the beauty before her. She knew that danger was everywhere in the universe. Before deciding to land, she activated the spacecraft's full-spectrum detection system and performed a thorough scan of the planet.

The scan revealed signs of life, but the forms and developmental level of that life puzzled Cheng Xin. The planet's organisms seemed to be at an extremely primitive stage, consisting mainly of simple single-celled organisms and low-level plants. There was no sign of intelligent life. Yet that regular signal indicated that some force capable of transmitting such a precise signal had to exist here.

"AA, something isn't right. The life forms on this planet are so primitive that they couldn't possibly send a signal like that. We have to be careful," Cheng Xin said to Ai AA, frowning.

Though they were full of doubts, Cheng Xin and Ai AA still decided to land on the planet and seek the signal's source. They put on their spacesuits, boarded the landing craft, and slowly descended onto a vast plain.

When the landing craft's hatch slowly opened, fresh, humid air rushed toward them, carrying a faint scent of vegetation. Cheng Xin and Ai AA stepped out cautiously and looked around. Before them lay a lush forest. Towering trees blocked out the sky, and strange plants swayed gently in the breeze.

"It's beautiful here, like Earth in its ancient age," Ai AA could not help saying in admiration.

Cheng Xin nodded, but her gaze remained alert. She activated the detector on her spacesuit and began searching for the signal's source. The detector's needle quickly pointed deep into the forest, as if the answer they had been seeking was hidden there.

Following the direction indicated by the detector, the two carefully entered the forest. They encountered many strange creatures within it. Some resembled enormous insects, leaping and darting among the branches; others were like transparent jellyfish, floating through the air. These creatures did not seem surprised by Cheng Xin and Ai AA's arrival. They merely looked at them curiously before returning to their own activities.

As they ventured deeper into the forest, the surroundings grew increasingly eerie. The trees gradually became twisted in shape, while enormous vines coiled around their trunks like pythons. A faint stench of decay hung in the air. Suddenly, Cheng Xin heard a deep rumble, as though it were coming from underground. Then the ground began to shake violently, and enormous cracks spread beneath their feet.

"AA, run!" Cheng Xin shouted, grabbing Ai AA and racing toward a nearby rise. The ground they had just left suddenly collapsed, leaving behind a huge opening. Black liquid surged from its depths, releasing a pungent odor.

"What is that?" Ai AA asked in terror.

Before Cheng Xin could answer, a pack of huge black creatures burst from the cave. They were over twice the height of a human, their bodies covered in black scales. Their eyes glowed red, and their mouths were filled with sharp fangs. With piercing shrieks, they lunged at Cheng Xin and Ai AA.

"Damn, alien creatures!" Cheng Xin swiftly drew the laser pistol she carried and fired at the charging creatures. The laser beams struck several of them. They cried out in pain and fell to the ground. But even more creatures rushed forward without hesitation, surrounding the two women from all sides.

During the fierce battle, Cheng Xin and Ai AA gradually realized that the creatures did not seem to attack by sight. Instead, they were extremely sensitive to some kind of energy fluctuation. The moment the women made any movement, the creatures around them would immediately pounce.

"AA, we can't keep fighting blindly like this. These creatures are sensitive to energy fluctuations. We have to find a way to shield our energy signals," Cheng Xin said as she dodged their attacks.

Ai AA nodded and quickly pulled a small energy-shielding device from her backpack. It was emergency equipment they had prepared aboard the spacecraft, originally intended to protect them from high-energy cosmic rays. They had never expected it to prove useful now.

Ai AA activated the energy-shielding device, enveloping both herself and Cheng Xin within its field. Instantly, the surrounding creatures seemed to lose their target. After wandering around them for a while, they gradually retreated.

Seizing the opportunity, Cheng Xin and Ai AA carefully left the dangerous area. They continued onward in the direction indicated by the detector, their hearts filled with vigilance. After a difficult trek, they finally arrived before an enormous valley.

At the far end of the valley stood a massive metal structure. Its shape was strange, its surface covered in intricate patterns and symbols that radiated a mysterious, ancient aura. The detector showed that the mysterious signal was coming from this building.

"This is it," Cheng Xin said, taking a deep breath.

The two slowly approached the metal structure. As they drew near, they found its great doors tightly shut, carved with all manner of bizarre designs. Cheng Xin carefully studied them, trying to find a clue for opening the doors. Suddenly, she noticed that one of the patterns bore an astonishing resemblance to the signal waveform they had received aboard the spacecraft.

"AA, look at this pattern. Could it be the password to open the door?" Cheng Xin said, pointing at it.

Ai AA looked it over and nodded. "Very possible. Let's try it."

Following the sequence of the signal waveform, Cheng Xin gently touched the patterns on the door. As she did, they began to emit a faint glow and flash in a certain order. A moment later, a deep rumble sounded, and the metal building's doors slowly opened.

An old and mysterious air rushed out from within. Cheng Xin and Ai AA exchanged a glance, gathered their courage, and entered the structure. Inside was a vast, empty space. Various glowing crystals were embedded in the walls, illuminating the entire chamber. At its center stood a massive circular device, also covered with intricate patterns and symbols.

"What is this?" Ai AA asked curiously as she stepped forward, wanting to examine the device more closely.

At that moment, a deep, ancient voice echoed through the building. "Outsiders, why have you come here?"

Cheng Xin and Ai AA jumped, swiftly looking all around them, but they saw no one.

"Who are you? Where are you?" Cheng Xin called out.

"I am the guardian of this planet. I have slept here for countless ages. Your arrival awakened me," the voice said again.

"Guardian? Did you create all the life on this planet?" Cheng Xin asked.

"No. These life forms are the result of natural evolution. But I remain here to preserve this planet's balance and prevent outside forces from destroying it," the guardian replied.

"Then why did you send that signal?" Ai AA asked.

"It was a warning signal, meant to remind other civilizations not to approach this planet lightly. Deep within this planet's core lies a powerful energy. If that energy is released, it will unleash a catastrophe capable of destroying the entire star system," the guardian said.

Cheng Xin and Ai AA were shocked. They had never imagined that this seemingly beautiful planet concealed such immense danger.

"Then what should we do? Our home has been destroyed. We need a new place to live," Cheng Xin said anxiously.

"You cannot remain here. This planet is not suitable for your survival, and your arrival has already disrupted its balance. The creatures you awakened will launch endless attacks against you," the guardian said.

"But we have nowhere else to go," Ai AA said despairingly.

"I can show you a path. At the edge of this star system lies a planet whose environment resembles your Earth's, and it has no intelligent life. You may go there and seek a new home," the guardian said.

After that, the guardian's voice vanished. A beam of light shot out from the central device, forming a star map in midair that marked the location of that planet.

As Cheng Xin and Ai AA looked at the map, hope rekindled in their hearts. They knew this was their only chance.

"Thank you, Guardian. We will leave this place and seek a new home," Cheng Xin said to the empty chamber.

Then Cheng Xin and Ai AA turned and left the mysterious metal structure. Following the path by which they had come, they carefully returned to the landing craft. Along the way, they suffered repeated attacks from the black creatures, but with the energy-shielding device and their unyielding determination, they escaped danger again and again.

At last, Cheng Xin and Ai AA boarded the landing craft and left that planet of danger and mystery. They piloted their spacecraft in the direction indicated by the guardian. In the boundless universe, their vessel was like a tiny speck of dust, but their hearts were filled with hope.

Throughout the long voyage, Cheng Xin and Ai AA supported one another and faced every hardship and challenge together. They did not know what awaited them ahead, but they believed that as long as hope remained in their hearts, they would find a new home of their own.

After traveling through countless days and nights, the spacecraft finally reached the planet at the edge of the star system. When they saw that beautiful, peaceful world through the porthole, tears of excitement spilled from their eyes. This planet would be their new beginning. Here, they would rebuild human civilization and carry humanity's hope forward.

Cheng Xin and Ai AA guided the spacecraft down slowly onto the planet. When they stepped out of the ship and set foot on that unfamiliar yet hope-filled land, they knew they carried humanity's future upon their shoulders. In this new home, they would use their wisdom and courage to write a new chapter for humankind.
