What was arcane magic? Arcane magic was the outward expression of a mage's inner self. What was spirit? Spirit was the reenactment of a mage's essence in the real world.
If anyone asked Shane, he would tell them those two answers without reservation.
Kel'Thuzad's residence was not dark. On the contrary, every corner was illuminated, because every corner held books—manuscripts, scrolls, and bound volumes.
Standing at the door, Shane saw Kel'Thuzad. Aside from his chill and sinister spirit, he was simply a spellcasting scholar obsessed with arcane research.
He was dressed very formally, and his appearance had been meticulously groomed.
"There is no dinner party, no guests, only the two of us. You do not mind, do you?"
"Of course not. I think it is perfect."
As Shane spoke, his senses swept over every detail. Kel'Thuzad dearly loved his residence; reinforcement spells had been embedded within the walls. He also placed great importance on secrecy, having added concealment spells to the main structure.
Ink, pens, and magical paper scrolls could be seen on small writing desks throughout the room. Rather than a residence, it was more like a library.
Yet Shane did not feel the slightest bit out of place. A room belonging to an arcane scholar should be like that.
"Why do we pursue arcane magic?"
The answers to those two questions differed for mages at different stages, and for mages with different goals. The rings of cold spirit spreading outward from Kel'Thuzad told Shane that his resolve to pursue arcane magic was hard enough to be icy. Yet his spirit possessed a dark quality; combined with that coldness, it gave the impression of something chill and sinister.
Shane's answer was: pursuing it required no reason.
"Exactly. Pursuing arcane magic requires no reason."
