Background
Master Qin oversees the martial training of thirty-two Sun Family recruits, including Wei Luo and Liu Changle. The recruits are given two months to attain entry into the Folding Waves Fist and qualify as crewmen; failure binds them to three years of servitude under their labor contracts. 5
Though he teaches at the Sun Family residence, Master Qin is not subordinate to the family. His arrangement with them is cooperative, and the Sun Family treats him as an equal due to his martial standing. 9
In his youth, Qin Changfeng traveled extensively before returning to Pingjiang Town roughly ten years before the main story. He attempted to establish a martial arts school, but the town's established schools repeatedly sent challengers to injure or cripple his students under the guise of friendly exchanges. Qin ultimately signed life-and-death contracts with several of their Three Refinements masters, defeated them one after another, killed one in the arena, and grievously injured the rest. The resulting enmity forced the closure of his school, after which he came to reside with the Sun Family. 49
The Sun Family accords him exceptional treatment, providing him with an exclusive western compound, servants, gardens, and a grand residence. Their reliance on him grows after the death of the family's strongest Three Refinements martial artist and Sun Chai's crippling injury. 39
Appearance
Master Qin is an elderly yet imposing martial artist whose bearing contrasts with his age. 5
- Beard and hair beginning to gray. 5
- Walks with “the stride of a dragon and the gait of a tiger.” 5
- His body turns crimson and his muscles visibly swell when he assumes the Stacked Waves Stance. 5
- Carries a fierce aura while demonstrating martial arts. 5
Personality
Master Qin is blunt, impatient, and highly selective with his instruction. He gives recruits minimal demonstrations, tells them to find the natural feeling of each stance themselves, and leaves weaker students to struggle without intervention. 5 6
He favors natural talent and readily offers hands-on correction to recruits such as Shen Wu, whose aptitude catches his interest. He shows little concern for those who fail his standards, but openly praises exceptional performance. 5 8
His teaching is also practical: he uses food rewards to motivate recruits, emphasizing that martial training requires sufficient meat and nourishment to replenish qi and blood. 6 9
Master Qin holds extremely high standards for disciples. He dismisses most of the estate's stronger boatmen as mediocre because they lack an understanding of the core of fist techniques, and he is unmoved by blatant displays of flattery, perseverance, or attempts to curry favor. 26 40
Although harsh toward ordinary trainees, he becomes noticeably more patient and considerate after formally accepting Wei Luo as a disciple. He permits Wei Luo daily access to the visualization diagram, offers him accommodation in the western courtyard, and later revises his previously limited assessment of Wei Luo after learning of his actions against the Pure Fragrance Cult. 41 54
Master Qin believes martial arts exist for practical victory and survival rather than attractive forms. He considers real combat and exposure to danger necessary for a martial artist's growth, which informs his decision to send Shen Wu against Yang Xian. 18 49
Abilities & Skills
Martial Mastery
Master Qin is a martial master who has crossed all three thresholds of qi and blood, placing him among the fewer than twenty martial artists of comparable level in Pingjiang Town. 9
- Crossing the first qi-and-blood threshold grants strength exceeding five hundred jin; Master Qin has passed the third. 9
- Can shatter bluestone with a casual fist strike. 9
- Broke a wooden stake as thick as a bowl’s mouth with a single Folding Waves Fist strike. 9
- Can send a Second Refinement martial artist flying more than ten meters with a single blow. 20
- Defeated several Three Refinements martial-school masters consecutively in life-and-death arena matches, killing one and grievously wounding the others. 49
- His martial standing allows him to deal with the Sun Family on equal terms. 9
- Despite his exceptional combat ability and mastery of force, he remains a Three Refinements martial artist rather than a Force Training Martial Master. 66
Folding Waves Fist
Master Qin teaches the Folding Waves Fist as the required martial art for Sun Family crewmen. 5 9
- Performs more than a dozen linked stances with fluid, flowing movements. 9
- Demonstrates the complete fist art only once before requiring students to train independently. 9
- Grants ten bowls of Bone-Strengthening Soup each month to the first recruit who reaches entry in the art. 9
- Judges prospective disciples by whether they understand the fist art's core rather than merely by their cultivation, resources, or natural physique. 40
- Can fuse three kinds of force into a single strike, allowing him to snap an ironwood stake with an apparently casual punch. 40
Layered Waves Shatter Rock
Master Qin possesses the sole visualization diagram of the Folding Waves Fist, titled ''Layered Waves Shatter Rock''. The diagram depicts immense waves crashing against reefs and serves as the art's foundation for force cultivation. 40 41
- Allows disciples who have sufficiently comprehended the Folding Waves Fist to cultivate Layered Wave Force. 41
- Explains that great mastery permits the fusion of two forces, while perfection permits the fusion of three. 41
- Warns disciples not to touch or damage the diagram, as it cannot be easily replaced if its spiritual resonance is lost. 41
- States that creating a visualization diagram requires reaching the realm of comprehension, though he declines to explain the diagram's full history. 41
- Promises Wei Luo a great gift should he fully comprehend the diagram. 41
Stacked Waves Stance
The Stacked Waves Stance is the foundation of the Folding Waves Fist and a method for tempering qi and blood. 5
- Instructs beginners to prioritize stance training over punching techniques. 5
- Teaches that qi and blood remain the foundation of martial arts regardless of future cultivation. 5
- Advises recruits not to copy his posture mechanically, but to seek the smoothest and most natural stance for themselves. 5
- Uses a violently wobbling platform assessment to determine which trainees have a stable enough foundation to learn boxing. 8
Teaching Method
- Gives recruits two months to attain entry into the Folding Waves Fist and become Sun Family crewmen. 5
- Selects only trainees who can maintain the Stacked Waves Stance on his moving platform for ten breaths to receive fist instruction. 8
- Offers occasional pointers when in the mood, but may disappear for days and leave students to practice alone. 6 9
- Rewards successful assessment candidates with meat rations equivalent to those of established Sun Family sailors. 9
- Uses meager meals for unqualified trainees to reinforce the importance of earning resources through martial progress. 6
- Uses sparring and practical instruction to teach that a martial artist's true purpose is to defeat an opponent and survive. 18
- Personally gives Shen Wu detailed corrections and exchanges moves with him, while giving little attention to trainees he considers unworthy. 18
- Refuses to accept disciples solely because of status, wealth, persistence, or apparent talent; he requires comprehension of Layered Wave Force and the core of fist techniques. 26 40
- Allows formal disciples to contemplate the ''Layered Waves Shatter Rock'' visualization diagram daily after warning them to preserve it. 41
Relationships
- Wei Luo — Initially instructor and trainee. Master Qin first pays little attention to Wei Luo because of his ordinary aptitude, but notices the improved quality of his Stacked Waves Stance during the assessment. 5 8 After Wei Luo independently comprehends Layered Wave Force, Qin accepts him as his second disciple and grants him access to the Folding Waves Fist visualization diagram. 40 41 Qin later expresses surprise and renewed regard after Wei Luo reaches Three Refinements, cures the Zhao Family's poison, and kills Wang Dali and Yang Xian. 54
- Shen Wu — Favored trainee and first disciple. Master Qin personally corrects Shen Wu’s stance and praises his sixteen-breath assessment result as unmatched in the courtyard. 5 8 He formally accepts Shen Wu as a disciple first and later orders him to confront the Pure Fragrance Cult's Yang Xian so that Shen Wu can gain real combat experience. 26 49 Qin is disappointed when Shen Wu returns poisoned, injured, and lacking fighting spirit. 54
- Liang Jun — Third disciple. Liang Jun is a reserved veteran boatman who becomes Master Qin's final disciple after rapidly comprehending Layered Wave Force. 43
- Sun Family — Cooperative partner. He teaches recruits for the family but retains the freedom to instruct or refuse instruction as he wishes. 9 The family supports him lavishly and repeatedly pressures him to take three disciples to reinforce its declining position. 39
- Sun Sheng — The Sun Family patriarch who humbles himself before Qin Changfeng and secures his agreement to choose at least three disciples. 39 Qin later agrees to lead several Sun Family members away during the Pure Fragrance Cult crisis in recognition of the family's years of patronage. 66
- Sun Chai — Sun Family representative who repeatedly urges Qin to take disciples and tries unsuccessfully to recommend candidates based on their cultivation and background. 39 40 He objects when Qin assigns Shen Wu to face Yang Xian, prioritizing Shen Wu's value to the Sun Family over his growth as a disciple. 49
- Zhao Xiu — Sun Family crewman who reveals Master Qin's earlier martial history to Wei Luo and seeks his aid against Yang Xian. 49 Qin refuses to intervene personally and instead sends Shen Wu to handle the threat. 49 50
- Wang Xiang — Qin Changfeng's senior brother and a Force Training expert from the Three Mountains Sect. 56
- Steward Li — Sun Family steward who entrusts the thirty-two new recruits to Master Qin’s training. 5
Story Role
Recruit Training
Master Qin receives the newly registered recruits at the Sun Family residence and establishes their two-month deadline to become crewmen. He introduces the Stacked Waves Stance as the first step toward the Folding Waves Fist. 5
Stance Assessment
After one month of training, he tests the recruits on a mechanically unstable platform. Only five trainees, including Wei Luo, hold their stance for the required ten breaths and advance to fist training. 8
Fist Instruction
Master Qin leads the five successful recruits to the fist-practice area, grants them meat rations, and demonstrates the Folding Waves Fist once. He offers Bone-Strengthening Soup as an incentive for the first person to gain entry into the art. 9
Enforcing the Deadline
When the two-month deadline arrives, Master Qin ruthlessly rejects the pleas of trainees who have failed to gain entry into the Folding Waves Fist. He orders those who have succeeded to step forward and confirms Wei Luo's advancement after testing his River Blockade technique. 13
Estate Authority
Master Qin maintains order in the Sun Family estate according to his own rules. When Zhang Chi attempts to kill Luo Sanhu during an internal conflict, Qin intervenes, sends Zhang Chi flying with one strike, and threatens to cripple him if he causes trouble again. 20
Taking Disciples
Under pressure from Sun Sheng, Master Qin agrees to accept at least three disciples but refuses to lower his standards for the Sun Family's preferred candidates. 39 40 He first accepts Shen Wu, then accepts Wei Luo after witnessing him use Layered Wave Force, and later selects Liang Jun as his third disciple. 26 40 43
Pure Fragrance Cult Crisis
When Zhao Xiu seeks aid against Yang Xian, Master Qin recognizes the Pure Fragrance Cult's nature but sends Shen Wu rather than acting personally, believing Shen Wu needs the tempering of a life-or-death battle. 49 50 After Yang Xian's death, he arrives at the Zhao residence, discovers Wei Luo's unexpected Three Refinements cultivation, and becomes disappointed in Shen Wu's poor performance. 54
Sun Family Evacuation
During the escalating Pure Fragrance Cult assault on the Sun Family, Master Qin agrees to take several members of the Sun Family away to preserve their lives. When a genuine Force Training Martial Master appears among the enemy, he identifies the overwhelming threat facing the household. 66
