Background / History
Partnership with the Uchiha
Orochimaru appears alongside Jiraiya during a confrontation between Uchiha shinobi, ANBU, and Root after a jinchūriki’s rescue. He recognizes Uchiha Ieyasu’s joking remarks as an attempt to ease tensions between members of the same village 16.
After returning to Konoha, Orochimaru is hurt by Hiruzen Sarutobi’s distrust and rejection. Uchiha Yo approaches him outside the Hokage Building and invites him to discuss a partnership over barbecue 103.
Orochimaru signs a contract granting him direct control over 30% of the Uchiha Research Institute’s profits and 500 million in annual experimental funding. He agrees to help Yo overcome the Uchiha’s predicament and work toward a shared future 104.
Land of Rivers and Kikyō Mountain
Orochimaru commands Konoha’s forces against Sunagakure in the Land of Rivers. He organizes squads, redirects operations as fighting escalates, and prioritizes the military briefing over Jiraiya’s questions about Kakuzu, the killer of their teacher’s son 123 124.
During the Kikyō Mountain campaign, he combines battlefield command with direct attacks. He infiltrates Sunagakure’s camp through a small snake, summons Manda and three additional giant snakes to destroy supplies, then attacks the puppet corps from behind 158.
His command decisions also expose his concern for accountability. He arranges ANBU reception and medical preparations for Minato’s depleted force, but later angrily rejects Jiraiya’s attempt to excuse the unit’s losses. He insists that completing an assassination does not erase responsibility for an overly aggressive commander’s decisions 194 195.
Orochimaru fights the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, using snake techniques, defensive summons, and verbal provocation. He holds Rasa in place until Yo and Minato arrive; their coordinated attack knocks the Kazekage into his snakes, leading to Rasa’s capture. Orochimaru subsequently participates in negotiations with Chiyo 215 219.
After the ceasefire, public hostility toward Orochimaru increases. He withdraws to academy research and occasional teaching, where his students’ admiration grows despite his reputation elsewhere in Konoha 236.
Hokage Succession and the Break with Hiruzen
Orochimaru’s interest in the Hokage position changes over time. He initially tells Yo that becoming Hokage is no longer his goal and that fighting for Konoha is now a duty. Later, after independently signing peace with the Water Country, he demands recognition rather than continuing as Hiruzen’s nominal successor and political shield 290 372.
Yo publicizes Orochimaru’s wartime achievements to raise his prestige and deepen the conflict with Hiruzen. On returning to Konoha, Orochimaru receives a cheering welcome led by the Military Police, while Uchiha Academy students present him with flowers and garlands 372 374.
Danzō offers political support for Orochimaru’s Fourth Hokage candidacy in exchange for preserving Root’s authority, exclusive access to research results, and a replacement arm made with the First Hokage’s cells. Orochimaru enters the cooperation while sharing laboratory locations and personnel information with Yo 376 380.
Believing Konoha’s leadership has become an obstacle to reform, Orochimaru considers defecting. His continuing conversations with Yo and preparations for the First Hokage cell experiment persuade him to remain. He also admits that causing difficulties for Hiruzen is itself a reason to contest the election 380 387 388.
Minato becomes Fourth Hokage. After losing the election, Orochimaru spends nearly a year largely secluded in his laboratory 394.
Root’s Exposure and the Tailed Beast Attacks
Following a signal to “close the net,” Orochimaru reports information about missing children and supplies locations for an ANBU rescue operation. He describes himself as an unwitting accomplice in a conspiracy and directs the Hokage’s attention toward Danzō 394.
During the subsequent attacks on Konoha, Orochimaru takes command of three ANBU squads sent against Kakuzu. After dealing with other bounty hunters, he helps the remaining agents finish the battle against Kakuzu, whose abilities have been exposed through prior intelligence 406 410.
Against the Nine-Tails, Orochimaru uses Manda and other giant snakes to bind the beast, then urges Hiruzen to push it out of Konoha. The restraint fails when Manda retreats and the remaining snakes are killed; Minato ultimately transports the Nine-Tails away. Orochimaru later reaches the sealing site but cannot enter the sealed area 415 416 419.
At Danzō’s public exposure, Orochimaru recognizes the modified arm and deduces that Sharingan were used to balance the First Hokage’s cells. His fascination with the result contrasts with the assembled leaders’ focus on Root’s crimes 423 424.
Research Leadership and the Olive Branch Plan
At Yo’s request, Orochimaru accepts Shisui as a disciple and reserves two days each week for his instruction. Under Fifth Hokage Uchiha Yo, he receives authority over research, the prison, and Konoha Academy, alongside an advisory position 436 456.
Orochimaru and Tsunade lead a resurrection project involving replacement bodies. He later presents academy research achievements to Yo and proposes an experiment combining improved Hashirama cells with Yo’s eyes to pursue a functional Rinnegan 501 508 509.
The experiment is arranged outside Konoha, with Yo requiring Hiruko and Fugaku’s presence. At Wind-Sand City, Orochimaru draws Yo’s blood and injects the experimental medicine 509 510 511.
During preparations against Akatsuki, Orochimaru assists with sealing the Nine-Tails extracted from the revived Minato and supplies controlled reincarnated shinobi to Obito. He later infiltrates the Water Country capital on Yo’s orders 519 523 539.
When the Olive Branch Plan begins, Orochimaru uses Impure World Reincarnation to summon former Konoha shinobi, including Hashirama, Tobirama, Mito, Kushina, Dan Katō, Might Duy, and Sarutobi Sasuke. He apologizes for recalling them from the Pure Land and explains the war and Madara’s role 541.
Appearance
Orochimaru has a pale face and long, straight black hair. He is described as a cold gentleman, with a low, magnetic voice 103 158.
- Habitual gesture: Frequently licks his lips or the corner of his mouth 158 160 436.
- Intimidating presence: When irritated, he radiates a cold, sinister aura that makes nearby civilians and ninja move away 104.
- Serpentine entrances: Can emerge from a snake’s mouth; during his meeting with Danzō, he crawls out wet and slimy 158 376.
Personality
Orochimaru is curious, ambitious, and driven by the pursuit of knowledge. His stated lifelong goal is to master every ninjutsu, and his research extends to immortality, resurrection, genetic engineering, and the origins of ocular powers 436 509.
He is a pragmatic commander who distinguishes personal grievances from operational priorities. He values morale and intelligence, but refuses to treat a completed objective as an excuse for avoidable casualties 123 135 195.
His pride can make retreat difficult: when Yo discusses the situation at Kikyō Mountain, Orochimaru treats losing the position as his own defeat. His resentment toward Hiruzen similarly combines political criticism with a deeply personal sense of betrayal 209 380.
Teaching reveals a less guarded side. Students continue to admire him despite public hostility, and he promises not to neglect Shisui’s education. He also protects Yo and Minato’s training, warns Yo about the risks of powerful eyes, and gives Tsunade contact scrolls when she leaves the front 220 236 290 436.
His scientific fascination does not always follow conventional moral boundaries. He admires Danzō’s ruthless solution to cell instability, yet explicitly tells Yo that the Sharingan used in his later cloning experiments were not obtained by attacking living people 423 509.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Techniques and Summoning
Yo describes Orochimaru as the ninja world’s foremost expert in researching and using snakes 436.
- Manda: Summons a massive purple-striped snake capable of devastating an enemy camp. Manda demands sacrifices and can refuse to continue fighting 158 416.
- Giant snake summons: Deploys multiple large snakes for destruction, attacks, and restraint 158 415.
- Ten Thousand Snake Formation: Creates a mass of snakes beneath an opponent to overwhelm them 215.
- Hidden Shadow Many Snake Hands: Produces more snakes than Hidden Shadow Snake Limbs and is described as more versatile 215.
- Fierce Snake Stomp / Annihilating Rampaging Snakes: Consecutive giant-snake attacks used against Rasa 215.
- Infiltration and messaging: Uses small snakes to enter enemy positions and carry scrolls 158 297.
- Limit: His summoned snakes cannot maintain restraint against the conscious Nine-Tails; Manda withdraws, and the others are quickly killed 416.
Defensive and Elemental Ninjutsu
- Triple Rashomon: Summons three gates that block Rasa’s Gold Dust Spear attack 215.
- Earth Release: Uses multiple Earth Release techniques alongside snake ninjutsu to attack Sunagakure’s puppet masters 158.
- Body Flicker Technique: Uses it to travel quickly to the Hokage Building 105.
- Clone use: Conducts a meeting through a clone while maintaining other work, noting that it still consumes considerable energy 387.
Forbidden Techniques and Sealing
- Impure World Reincarnation: Recalls deceased Konoha shinobi from the Pure Land through summoned coffins 541.
- Resurrection research: Co-leads a project with Tsunade that includes cultivating replacement bodies 501.
- Immortality research: Studies Kakuzu’s Earth Grudge Fear, but says its method differs from his own ideas 406 436.
- Tailed beast sealing: Helps Yo and Jiraiya seal the Nine-Tails immediately after Minato releases it 519.
- Technique instruction: Yo asks him to teach a secret technique to revived shinobi before the next phase of operations against Akatsuki 517.
Biological and Ocular Research
| Research area | Documented result | Limitation / significance |
|---|---|---|
| Cloning technology | Receives a notebook explaining cloning and genetic reproduction from Yo 290. | Becomes a foundation for later cloned Sharingan experiments 509. |
| First Hokage cells | Produces replacement arms and develops medicine that reduces the cells’ invasive properties 423 509. | Earlier replacement arms require periodic renewal 423. |
| Synthetic Sharingan | Clones Sharingan genes and technologically synthesizes an Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 509. | Transplant recipients gain no special abilities; he identifies a missing spiritual or soul-level component 509. |
| Synthetic Rinnegan | Combines the synthetic Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan with improved Hashirama cells 509. | His own transplant only improves visual clarity. An Uzumaki volunteer experiences chakra and life-force drain without special powers 509. |
| Functional Rinnegan experiment | Proposes using Yo’s existing ocular power with improved First Hokage cells; later administers the medicine 509 511. | The synthetic eyes are not presented as a successful functional Rinnegan awakening 509. |
| Academy technology | Presents institutional progress in train modification, chakra armor, computers, and biological cloning 508. | These are achievements of the academy’s research teams, not solely Orochimaru’s individual inventions 508. |
Strategy and Analysis
- Adaptive deployment: Allows withdrawal on the Wind Country side of the Land of Rivers while intensifying operations nearer Konoha 124.
- Morale management: Publicizes exceptional victories to encourage an outnumbered army and undermine enemy confidence 135.
- Alliance exploitation: Recognizes deliberately leaked intelligence as an opportunity to strike Iwagakure despite its alliance with Sunagakure 160.
- Ninjutsu evaluation: Identifies self-injury as the central danger of the developing wind-enhanced Rasengan 220.
- Historical deduction: Reconstructs much of Madara’s hidden plan from Izanagi, Hashirama-cell research, Nagato’s Rinnegan, Obito’s history, White Zetsu’s genetics, and Akatsuki’s tailed beast acquisitions. Yo acknowledges that his analysis closely matches what he knows 510.
Equipment / Items
- Academy laboratory: Uses barriers to secure private discussions and experiments; it is distinct from the laboratory used in cooperation with Root 387.
- Experimental scrolls and forbidden-technique materials: Keeps these throughout his workspace 394.
- Cloning notebook: A gift from Yo that Orochimaru regards as the work of a kindred scientific mind 290.
- Improved First Hokage cell serum: Prepared for experiments intended to strengthen Yo and advance ocular evolution 509 510 511.
- Stored ocular specimens: Displays cloned Sharingan and synthetic advanced eyes, preserving experimental results in sealed scrolls 509.
