Land of Wind, Sunagakure.
Unlike Konoha's lush greenery, this place held only endless yellow sand and angular rock buildings eroded by wind and grit. The air was thick with dryness and killing intent. Though the fierce battle from days ago had ended, the terror of near destruction and the confusion of losing their Kage still hung over every villager and shinobi like heavy storm clouds.
The Kazekage's office seemed especially crowded and oppressive at the moment. Not because the space was small, but because of the people gathered here and the weighty atmosphere.
Elder Chiyo and Elder Ebizo sat on either side of the main seats. Their faces looked older than ever, yet their gazes remained as sharp as eagles'. Below them were the heads of Sunagakure's various departments, representatives of the major clans, and a handful of Jonin who had distinguished themselves during the defense against Kumogakure's invasion. Among them, the red-haired Rasa stood near the front. He stood tall, his face still bearing a trace of exhaustion from the bitter battle, but more than that, a calm resolve. His feat of turning the tide with Gold Dust had long spread throughout the village, making him the focus of the glances covertly converging upon him.
"Everyone is already aware of the situation." Elder Chiyo's voice was hoarse and low as it broke the suffocating silence. "The Third Kazekage has vanished, and there has been no word of him. Kumogakure brazenly invaded. Though they were ultimately driven back, our village suffered catastrophic losses. Supplies, manpower, morale—all have fallen to rock bottom."
She swept her gaze over everyone present, each pair of eyes filled with anxiety and unease.
"Outside, predators surround us. Kumogakure may have retreated, but they will not let this go. Iwagakure, Konoha, and even Kirigakure are watching. Inside, we have no leader, and people's hearts are unsettled. If this continues, Sunagakure... may collapse from within before the next enemy even arrives."
Her words were like icy kunai stabbing into every heart. No one refuted her, because this was the bloody reality.
Ebizo took over, his tone equally grave. "Sunagakure has reached a critical moment of life and death. We can no longer remain immersed in our grief over the Third Kazekage's loss and simply wait. The village needs a new Kage! It needs a leader capable of guiding us out of this crisis and restoring Sunagakure!"
"But... in such haste, who can bear such a heavy responsibility?" A clan representative spoke hesitantly. "The Third Kazekage's prestige and ability..."
"Precisely because the situation is urgent, we cannot hesitate!" Chiyo suddenly raised her voice. Though old, she carried an authority that could not be questioned. "What we need is power that can protect the village right now, power that can make our enemies fear us! We need someone who can kindle hope amid despair!"
Her gaze slowly, yet with absolute certainty, fell upon Rasa.
In an instant, every gaze focused on him. There was anticipation, scrutiny, doubt, and deep hope.
Rasa's body trembled slightly. He had expected his achievements in battle to earn him promotion and recognition, but he had never imagined... the position of Fourth Kazekage. This responsibility was too heavy, heavy enough to crush a person. Especially with such a mess on his hands.
An older Jonin frowned slightly and spoke. "Elder Chiyo, Jonin Rasa has indeed rendered great service and possesses exceptional strength. But he is still young, and in terms of experience..."
"Experience?" Chiyo interrupted him, her gaze sweeping over several veteran Jonin who harbored their own thoughts. "Before absolute strength and the determination to protect the village, conventional 'experience' is sometimes meaningless! Have you all forgotten who used Gold Dust to block the Eight-Tails' Tailed Beast Ball? Who confronted the Fourth Raikage's assault head-on? If Rasa had not stepped forward, would any of you sitting here still have the chance to discuss so-called 'experience'?!"
Her words struck like hammer blows, turning the Jonin who had objected pale and livid by turns, leaving him speechless. The others also fell silent. The details of that battle had long since spread, and Rasa's performance had been nothing short of miraculous. He had truly saved the village.
Ebizo added at the right moment, his tone gentler but equally firm. "Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. Rasa's Magnet Release Gold Dust is capable of both offense and defense, with limitless potential. It is precisely the symbol of strength Sunagakure needs most right now. His courage and decisiveness have also been proven. Following deliberation by the council of elders, we believe that Jonin Rasa is the most suitable candidate to succeed as the Fourth Kazekage under the current circumstances."
The meeting room fell silent once more, leaving only the mournful howl of windblown sand scraping across the rocks outside.
Everyone stared intently at Rasa.
Rasa took a deep breath. He could feel the crushing weight behind those gazes. He knew this was not an honor, but an immense responsibility that he might not even be able to bear. Ahead lay internal turmoil and external threats, scarce resources, and powerful enemies watching from the shadows.
He glanced at Chiyo and Ebizo. Their eyes held unreserved support and trust. He thought of the comrades who had died during Kumogakure's invasion, and of the villagers struggling to survive amid the wind and sand.
At last, he raised his head. Beneath his short red hair, his eyes became incomparably firm and sharp. He stepped forward, facing everyone, and his steady, powerful voice shattered the silence.
"If this is the village's decision, if you all place your trust in me..." He paused, as though forcing down every last trace of hesitation and uncertainty. "I, Rasa, am willing to shoulder the responsibility of the Fourth Kazekage!"
He raised a hand. Dense chakra surged forth as fine golden grains gathered and swirled in his palm, radiating a dazzling yet solid light.
"I swear upon this Gold Dust: as long as I draw breath, I will do everything in my power to protect Sunagakure! I will lead the village through these hardships and restore its glory!"
The gleaming Gold Dust seemed to dispel part of the gloom in the office, instilling a trace of warmth and confidence into everyone's chilled hearts.
Chiyo and Ebizo exchanged a glance, satisfaction flashing in their eyes. After a brief silence, the remaining higher-ups and Jonin gradually began to bow.
"Greetings, Lord Fourth Kazekage!"
The voices were sparse at first, then became orderly and resounding, echoing through the Kazekage's office.
Rasa—no, now Fourth Kazekage Rasa—felt the weighty recognition and turned his gaze toward the endless sea of sand beyond the window. He knew the road beneath his feet was covered in thorns, but he had no other choice. He had to use this Gold Dust to pave a path of survival for Sunagakure.
Sunagakure had welcomed its Fourth Kazekage. The situation of the Shinobi World had gained another new variable because of it.
