Background
Secret Realm Survival
Leo awakened in the body formerly belonging to young Rexxar inside a secret-realm storeroom. His body had already become sturdier, and a dark-red spiral tattoo had appeared on the back of his right hand. The tattoo supplied him with a leveling system fueled by life energy. 2 3
He survived alone for nearly seven months by hunting beasts, clearing ant nests, crafting basic tools, and repeatedly pushing his body beyond its limits. By the end of this period, he had explored most of the realm and become strong enough to kill a Rhinoceros Armor Beast with a single strike. 3
When Satotz, Kaspar, and Selena encountered him, Leo claimed to be an ordinary person who had accidentally entered the realm and suffered memory loss. He aided their survey work, shared his survival knowledge, and entrusted Satotz with a beast-hide map he had found in the palace. 5 8
Leo initially approached the survey team with calculated friendliness, seeking to establish himself as a useful guide and capable partner. Selena subsequently exchanged hunting and wilderness-survival knowledge with him. When she called him a friend upon their departure, his happiness was genuine, marking his first acknowledged friendship since arriving in the world. 6 8
Hunter Career
After leaving the secret realm, Leo trained independently in Biscuit Forest Park near Kent City. Eighteen days of hunting culminated in his advancement to Level 25, releasing his initial forced Zetsu and awakening Nen. Using knowledge remembered from the manga, he taught himself the basic principles and confirmed his Enhancement affinity through Water Divination. 10
After another month of foundational Nen practice, Leo entered Heaven's Arena to gain real combat experience. He studied fights through the first hundred floors, rapidly rose through the arena, and defeated opponents with overwhelming hand-to-hand strength without needing to rely on Nen. 10 11
He later trained under Biscuit, who identified him as an Enhancer and cautioned him that an ability strengthened through hunting could turn its user into a monster if he lost sight of himself. 26 29
Leo commissioned Biscuit using the rare red gemstone Red Storm and gifts suited to her tastes. She approved his decision to prioritize fundamentals over prematurely designing an ability, then trained him in advanced aura allocation, combat anticipation, and the adjacent Nen categories of Transmutation and Emission. 26 29
Leo became a Criminal Hunter, using Hunter Association intelligence and his own analysis to track wanted Nen users. His successful captures earned merit points, eventually leading to his promotion to One-Star Hunter. 39 40 52
His early Association work included accepting Mizai Istom's invitation to help capture a criminal gang on the Ulubian Continent, with Kanzai also assigned to the operation. He later accepted Sophia as a travelling apprentice after she earned three wins on Heaven's Arena's 200th floor, initially restricting her responsibilities to intelligence, surveillance, and support. 34 40
After defeating Illumi inside Sophia's Duel Arena, Leo spared him both to avoid retaliation from the Zoldyck Family and Nanika and to acknowledge Silva's earlier indirect assistance against Chrollo. Leo then received a silver-star Hunter License and celebrated his promotion with friends and members of the Association. 50 52
His subsequent achievements against the Phantom Troupe, his record of more than fifty wanted criminals, and Sophia's promotion earned him Two-Star status. He went on to become a Heaven's Arena Floor Master and continued hunting in increasingly productive wilderness regions. 95 98 101
Dark Continent Exploration
After consolidating his position as Hunter Association Chairman and preparing an overseas base, Leo led Sophia, Kastro, Shizuku, Nico, Asher, Goreinu, Kalluto, Morel, Shoot, Knuckle, and Hisoka toward the Dark Continent. His team entered the Dark Sea using Asher's teleportation network and Little Azure's mobility. 393 395
Preparations included supporting Vivian's rise among the Ten Dons, constructing an island transfer base, recruiting Morel for his maritime expertise and team leadership, and granting leveling abilities to his companions. The expedition departed aboard the Flying Dutchman yacht after ten days of preparations, following a route intended to avoid known dangerous deep-sea areas. 172 197 214 270 395
During the voyage, Leo used an enlarged Final Moment state and allied dragon power to destroy a thousand-meter-class super-giant octopus. He subsequently continued through the Dark Continent's outer region, employed Elidel as a guide, encountered the Breeding Beast Pap, and secured Endless Stones to charge his new Infinity ability. 399 400 431 452 453
Leo also fulfilled his agreement to return Bai, a mist life-form, to the Dark Continent after 368 years away. In exchange, Bai agreed to accompany him until he found his own people; Leo regarded him as reasonably reliable and acknowledged that Bai had previously saved his life. 303 409
Over nine months of travel, Leo's group crossed roughly half of the outer region, discovered new species and exploration sites, and found a secret realm containing a gravity stone. The stone was used to establish a gravity-training room at the expedition base. 454
Cross-World Travel
After fully charging Infinity with Endless Stones, Leo transported his expedition into another world. There, he identified their location as the Grand Line and began seeking the Six Powers, a physical-combat system consisting of Geppo, Soru, Tekkai, Kami-e, Rankyaku, and Shigan. 453 463 464
Leo infiltrated the G-9 Naval Branch while his companions waited on Little Azure. He subdued Vice Admiral Gareth with invisible Nen pressure and demanded the Six Powers in exchange for the lives of everyone at the branch. Gareth initially refused, but capitulated after Leo prepared a devastating light sphere above the base and imposed a three-second deadline. Leo had no intention of joining either the Marines or a pirate crew. 464
After acquiring the techniques, Leo demonstrated them slowly to his companions so they could follow the movements, balance changes, and application of force. He deliberately excluded Tekkai from their instruction, regarding it as dangerously impractical. 465
Leo subsequently destroyed an uninhabited island to demonstrate his power to Tesoro. Rather than killing him, he offered help in taking revenge on the Celestial Dragons in exchange for submission. Tesoro accepted and surrendered his resources. Leo then obtained the Mirror-Mirror Fruit from Tesoro's collection and gave it to Asher because of its compatibility with his existing abilities. 468
During the approach to the Marineford War, Leo intercepted and overwhelmed the Blackbeard Pirates. He killed Sanjuan Wolf, launched the other principal crew members into the sky, and had Little Azure catch them to preserve potential opponents for Hisoka. He then defeated Blackbeard himself, leaving him alive to investigate the secret behind his ability to consume two Devil Fruits. 486 487
Leo and his group returned to the Gran Tesoro the next day. The Marineford War ended in their absence with Ace and Whitebeard surviving and the Marines suffering a humiliating defeat. The World Government attributed the disrupted balance of power to Leo and issued his 5.46-billion-Beli bounty. 487
Later, Leo supervised preparations for an opening ceremony at Hunter Association headquarters, where numerous factions gathered. With Morel, Kastro, and Sophia beside him, he monitored the plaza through En and approved displaying all the prepared Devil Fruits alongside a large quantity of gold supplied by the Golden Emperor's side. He intended the ceremony to make a major public impact, although its outcome had not yet been shown. 497
Appearance
Leo's appearance changed dramatically as his level increased. After six months in the secret realm, he was a lean, heavily muscled young man nearly 1.85 meters tall; by Level 111, he stood 3.5 meters tall. 3 400
- Dark-gold spiral tattoo on the back of his right hand; it was originally dark red. 2 257
- Pale-blue vortex tattoo on the back of his left hand, representing Infinity. 430
- Wheat-colored skin and faint scars from his early survival in the secret realm. 3
- Sharp eyes and a composed, alert bearing developed through constant hunting and combat. 3 4
- Black striped markings spread across his body when Final Moment or Instant Release is activated. 64 142
- Initially wore self-made hide armor with bone plates, a stone knife, bone darts, and a bone spear. 3 4
- Changed into white casual clothing after leaving the secret realm and later wore a white suit at the Autumn Hunt's royal banquet. 9 384
- Can compress his enlarged body to a less conspicuous size, concealing major changes in height when necessary. 215 303
- His Masked Rider Calamity King armor has compound eyes, a V-shaped antenna, and a decorative transformation belt. 392
Personality
Leo is intensely driven to become stronger, treating combat, hunting, and training as necessary steps toward reaching the peak. He is patient in preparation and analytical in action, studying criminal habits, enemy abilities, and strategic risks before committing himself. 40 98 172 239
He is protective of people he accepts as companions. He trains his team harshly but controls his strikes to avoid killing them, heals their serious injuries, and spent part of his lifespan to grant them the means to grow stronger. 254 270
His morality is pragmatic and often severe. Leo spared Illumi partly to avoid consequences involving the Zoldyck Family and Nanika, and he refused to involve himself with the Black Whale because he suspected a mass sacrifice. However, he has also slaughtered livestock solely for life energy and watched other Autumn Hunt participants die or betray one another without intervening. 52 172 215 365
Leo is politically astute when it serves his long-term aims. He rejected attempts by the princes Rhine and Vance to recruit him during the Autumn Hunt, while later using Nitrolomi rice to strengthen his relationship with the Zoldyck Family and build leverage concerning Nanika. 360 423
He values cooperation as part of maintaining his humanity. When Knuckle questioned why he needed weaker companions, Leo explained that intelligence, communication, cooperation, and tools distinguish humans from beasts, and directly affirmed that he needed the team. He also acknowledged his limitations in team command and sought Morel's broader tactical judgment. 214 255
His concern can take a blunt or teasing form. He encouraged Kalluto's social development, allowed him two days of sightseeing during a mission, and checked on Hisoka after serious defeats while masking concern with mockery or references to the lifespan invested in him. 211 328 329 334
Leo retains a playful enthusiasm beneath his imposing strength. He theatrically performed a “Henshin” transformation when creating his Masked Rider armor, then became embarrassed when he realized Netero had watched. He also withheld warning Asher about the Mirror-Mirror Fruit's terrible taste and treated the Blackbeard Pirates' assault as an opportunity for taunts and exaggerated entertainment. 392 468 486 487
His coercive methods extend beyond combat. He threatened the G-9 branch to obtain the Six Powers and used Tesoro's hatred of the Celestial Dragons to secure his allegiance. These actions show his willingness to use fear and personal motivations rather than relying solely on direct destruction. 464 468
Abilities & Skills
Proof of Humanity
Leo's core ability is tied to the spiral tattoo on his right hand. It absorbs life energy from hunted creatures and defeated enemies, converts that energy into levels, and continuously enhances his body. 2 3 257
- Raises physical strength, speed, durability, senses, aura capacity, and recovery rate through leveling. 3 215 303 400
- Its Ultimate form is classified as Specialization and does not occupy Nen memory capacity, allowing Leo to develop a separate personal Nen ability. Its leveling effect is described as having no upper limit. 257
- Initially forced Leo into Zetsu until Level 25, when the restriction lifted and his body underwent a qualitative enhancement. 10 257
- Evolved at a secret-realm altar and gained the capacity to grant level panels to others. 257
- Recipients gain a dark-red spiral tattoo and can develop through the same system, though Leo may revoke the granted power. 270
- Following the altar evolution, a recipient's potential level was capped at half of Leo's level. 257
- Granted panels provide physical enhancement and self-healing, rather than all of Leo's additional effects. The demonstrated weakened version also penalizes unjustified killing of fellow humans; withdrawn enhancements gradually fade. 257 270
- Granting abilities initially consumed Leo's lifespan and energy; empowering ten people cost him five years of lifespan. 270
- At Pap's Breeding Beast, Leo sought the removal of two restrictions on Proof of Humanity. Pap set the price at 600 years of lifespan, but Leo later resisted the lifespan-extraction mechanism. 452 453
- The Styx Stone incident further evolved the ability, granting Leo an Immaculate Body and a longer lifespan. 159
- The Immaculate Body effect is described as freeing his flesh of impurities, greatly extending lifespan, and granting immunity to abnormal intrusions. 257 452
The conditions recorded for Proof of Humanity · Ultimate include doubled pain when injured, a prohibition on lethal weapons and defensive equipment after aura activation, and a monthly twenty-four-hour period of automatic Zetsu during which physical strength is enhanced. Killing fellow humans without cause carries a penalty of one level and one year of lifespan, with exceptions for enemies hostile toward the user or humanity and enemies who attack them. These were recorded conditions before his later negotiations with Pap. 257 452
Infinity
Infinity is a pale-blue vortex ability manifested as a tattoo on the back of Leo's left hand. It functions through stored energy and possesses interworld coordinate capability. 430
- Leo obtained it through a wish following his dealings with the Zoldyck Family; its initial energy reading was 0%, leaving it inactive. 430
- Its initial recorded coordinates included the Hunter × Hunter world and one vacant coordinate slot, with a 365-day cooldown for a new coordinate. 430
- Leo can charge it by directing massive amounts of aura into the tattoo. 430
- His expedition mined Endless Stones to fully charge the ability. 453
- Once charged, Infinity enabled Leo and his party to reach another world, where they arrived in the Grand Line. 463
Nen Mastery
Leo is an Enhancer with exceptionally high aura reserves and advanced control over basic and high-level Nen applications. 26 202
- Initially taught himself Ten, Zetsu, Ren, and foundational Hatsu using remembered manga knowledge; Water Divination confirmed his Enhancement type. 10
- After his first month of Nen practice, could maintain Ken for nineteen minutes and extend En approximately seven meters. Later training increased his Ken endurance to forty-five minutes. 10 51
- Learned Flow under Biscuit, using Gyo to read aura distributions and rapidly shifting defensive aura to match incoming strikes. Within ten days, he could also anticipate attacks through subtle physical cues. 29
- Trained in Transmutation and Emission as categories adjacent to Enhancement; early Transmutation instruction involved heating a ball of aura enough to ignite a leaf. 29
- Uses En for wide-area detection; its documented range reached 3,000 meters at Level 111. 215 303 400
- Can sense hidden enemies, surveillance devices, living creatures, and nearby aura users. 189 330 363
- Fires compressed air bullets to kill magical beasts from range. 363
- Used precise Hatsu bullets to shoot down larger flying magical beasts while travelling through the Dark Continent. 433
- His aura eruptions can crack stone beneath his feet and create suffocating pressure over an area. 189 202
- Subdued Vice Admiral Gareth through invisible Nen pressure without allowing him to land an effective attack. 464
- Extended En across the plaza at Hunter Association headquarters to monitor the concealed presences of assembled factions before the opening ceremony. 497
Final Moment
Final Moment manifests black markings over Leo's body and allows dynamic conversion between physical attributes. 111 142
- Enhances physical strength and, in its recorded adjusted form, increases recovery ability by fifty percent. 111
- Can redistribute enhancement among strength, defense, recovery, and agility according to immediate combat needs. 111
- Increasing one attribute reduces the others; Leo has used it to maximize agility or strength. 111 142 324
- Can prioritize strength and agility together at the expense of defense and regeneration, as demonstrated while adapting to Netero's Guanyin attacks. 274
- Stores received damage while active; once all markings turn red, he can unleash a devastating Final Strike without aura expenditure. 111
- Restricts him to fists and legs, prevents the use of En, doubles aura consumption each second, and forces one hour of Zetsu after deactivation. 111
- At sea, he used Final Moment together with his Nen armor to transform into a 50-meter-tall Gundam-like form and battle a super-giant octopus. 392 399
Nen Armor and Calamity King
Leo developed adaptable Nen armor with multiple combat configurations. During testing, it remained undamaged by Netero's full-force attacks. He could maintain the armor and Final Moment together for approximately five hours at the tested combat intensity, although stronger techniques would shorten that duration. 392
| Configuration | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Fifty-Meter Giant | A dark-red giant form emphasizing strength and defense. One test punch tore up the earth with a shockwave, and it could leap approximately two thousand meters into the sky, but the armor itself could not truly fly. 392 |
| Masked Rider Calamity King | A compact, streamlined humanoid suit emphasizing speed and mobility, with compound eyes, a V-shaped antenna, and a decorative belt. Leo devised a theatrical transformation gesture and shout for it. 392 |
Leo judged the giant form's full offensive power too dangerous to test near Colton Manor and stopped short of unleashing a maximum-strength attack there. 392
Instant Release and Offensive Techniques
Leo possesses several high-output combat techniques built around his overwhelming physical power.
- Instant Release — Temporarily drives his physical strength, speed, defense, and regeneration to their limit; its activation covers him in black markings and grants near-teleportation speed. 64
- Its incomplete debut version compressed and expended all aura over five minutes, forcibly removed the body's limits, enhanced the five senses, and supplied ultra-fast regeneration. It could not be interrupted, was limited to once per day, and left Leo exhausted and unable to use Nen after its aura expenditure. 46
- Destiny Daredevil — A temporary enhancement used to overwhelm Kote after a prolonged battle. 64
- Super Destruction Punch — A heavy striking technique capable of killing powerful Nen users; Franklin died after taking it head-on. 64 70
- Destroyed the reinforced alloy entrance of Doctor's base, collapsed part of the surrounding rock wall, and killed more than thirty waiting guards. 148
- Nuclear Explosion Fist — A finishing technique intended to annihilate multiple Shadow Beasts at once. 190
- Hopeless Love — A selective aura technique that harms non-human beings while healing humans within its area of effect. 377
- Aura Dragons — During the battle with the super-giant octopus, Leo summoned five aura dragons to bombard its head. 399
- At the end of the Autumn Hunt, sent five enormous golden dragons into separate regions, where they exploded into hundreds of thousands of aura bullets and killed large numbers of magical beasts. 384
- Conversion Light Sphere — Created a 200-meter-diameter sphere of light as a final attack against the super-giant octopus. 399
- Large-Scale Destruction — Completely destroyed an uninhabited island in a demonstration intended to break Tesoro's resistance. 468
Regeneration and Life Sharing
Leo's recovery is extraordinary even outside his specialized combat states. Early in his growth, he recovered from a fractured shoulder within hours, neutralized paralysis venom in three hours, and later regenerated minor wounds in seconds. 3 215
- Can heal serious injuries sustained by his allies, including broken bones and severed limbs. 161 254
- Regenerating Hisoka's arm after the Doctor battle consumed thirty percentage points of Leo's Level 73 life-energy progress. 161
- Healed Nina, Brennan's daughter, without seeking attention for the act. 252
- Regenerated a new body after being caught in the Miniature Rose explosion. 293 294
- Later restored both Hisoka's missing arm and leg after his defeat in the Kakin Empire. 334
- Life Sharing transfers his life energy to Little Azure in exchange for a reciprocal surge in power; using it reduced Leo from Level 95 (55%) to Level 95 (5%). 324
- The recorded ability requires a willing linked creature and consumes fifty percent of life energy to establish the connection. Both sides share life or lifespan and physical strength, while additional aura is consumed each second until the link is severed or aura is exhausted. 257 452
- Can borrow one of the linked creature's abilities through Ability Sharing, including Little Azure's flight. 257 324
- Combined Life Sharing with maximum-strength Conversion when preparing an all-out strike against the Birdmen. 461
Body Alteration and Flight
Leo can alter his own body size, shrinking to avoid detection despite his increasingly conspicuous natural growth. 215
After Proof of Humanity evolved, he could access Little Azure's flight ability and walk through open air as though descending stairs. 263 324
He consciously compressed his body after reaching three meters at Level 90. By contrast, he did not hide his growth to 3.5 meters after the octopus battle because the expedition members were trusted companions already familiar with his leveling ability. 303 400
Combat, Hunting, and Instruction
Leo's fighting style is built on close-quarters fundamentals, overwhelming speed, and precise adaptation rather than a reliance on weapons.
- Learned practical striking, movement, and timing by observing and fighting across Heaven's Arena. 11
- Defeats opponents through unenhanced physical ability when appropriate, including Illumi inside Duel Arena and Razor during their Greed Island duel; also overcame the Shadow Beasts and Zeno and Silva Zoldyck, using Nen and Final Moment during the latter confrontation. 52 190 202 203 237
- Skilled at tracking criminals by analyzing routines, surveillance habits, escape routes, and local intelligence. 39 40
- Trains allies through rigorous physical conditioning, Nen instruction, combat drills, and controlled sparring. 97 100 254
- Uses arena matches as experimental training, testing aura applications and tactical combinations and sometimes deliberately adopting weaker fighting styles to expose deficiencies. 50
- Refined his technique through Netero's instruction, learning from the older fighter's ability to disrupt balance, exploit transitions between attacks, and control distance with minimal movement. 109 110
- By a later sparring match, could match Netero's physical combat performance while using approximately seventy percent of his strength and no personal aura ability, before both escalated to their major techniques. 273
- Exposed his trainees to overwhelming killing intent so they could remain functional against terrifying Dark Continent opponents. By the end of special training, ten trainees could withstand him at half strength for twenty seconds without anyone falling. 255
- Upon arriving in the Grand Line, he pursued instruction in the Six Powers to further develop his physical combat foundation. 463 464
- Acquired the Six Powers through coercing Gareth, then taught his companions their mechanics through repeated slow demonstrations. He omitted Tekkai, while the trainees explored combinations such as Kami-e with En and powerful Rankyaku attacks. 464 465
- Against the Blackbeard Pirates, stopped Burgess's strongest punch with one finger, endured the crew's combined assault unharmed, and defeated multiple members by throwing them into the sky. 486
- Struck Blackbeard's face sixty-four times in half a second and subsequently defeated him with a body blow and a prolonged aerial beating. 487
Equipment / Items
- Hunter License — Used to access Hunter Association intelligence, register merits, and request resources such as private airships. 39
- Beast-hide map — Found in the secret-realm palace; later played a role in activating the altar that evolved Proof of Humanity. 2 8 257
- Early survival gear — Self-made leather armor, bone plates, stone knife, bone darts, bone spear, and leather pack. 3 4
