Appearance

Goreinu is a burly man with short black hair and notably thick eyebrows. He first appears in a black vest and carries a shoulder bag while traveling. 9 14

  • Short black hair
  • Thick eyebrows
  • Broad, powerfully built frame
  • Usually wears practical, casual clothing such as a black vest 9

During the search for Nitrolomi, Goreinu wears a hooded, waterproof protective suit supplied by Shizuku. He tests its fit and finds that it does not restrict his movement. 420

Personality

Goreinu is friendly and outgoing once trust has been established. Though initially wary when Leo approaches him after the Big Eater Contest, he accepts Leo's sincere attempt at friendship and offers practical advice about Heaven's Arena. 9

He is cautious in dangerous work and thinks through the risks of each assignment before acting. In operations with Kastro and Nico, he remains calm under pressure, studies intelligence carefully, and prioritizes speed, positioning, and coordination. 174 175 176

Goreinu is also resilient. He continues evading the Cleaners despite a broken arm, chest injuries, and pursuit by an ant swarm, managing to contact Leo with crucial intelligence. Following his recovery, he chooses to train further rather than remain stagnant. 122 123 169

He is considerate toward his companions. At the team's dinner gathering, he volunteers to help Nico wash the dishes even though Nico finishes last in the Nen-control competition. He also openly praises Nico's complex ability and recognizes the value of his intelligence support. 168 176

Goreinu remains conscious of the team's limitations rather than assuming that their strength makes them invulnerable. After Leo defeats the giant octopus encountered on the voyage toward the Dark Continent, he regrets that the others could not contribute to their first major battle. Later, he openly admires Bullet's strength while watching him spar with Hisoka. 400 496

Abilities & Skills

Black-and-White Sage

Goreinu's primary Nen ability manifests two gorilla-like Nen beasts: the Black Sage and White Sage. He can exchange his own position—or another person's position—with one of the beasts, making the ability highly effective for ambushes, rescues, and battlefield disruption. 9 16

  • Used both beasts to secretly assist his eating during the Big Eater Contest, allowing him to beat Leo's time. 9
  • Can swap himself out of immediate danger, as when he exchanged positions with the White Sage to evade Gabri's follow-up attack. 16
  • Can forcibly reposition opponents; during the Carlson convoy ambush, he switched the enemy Nen escort with Black Sage and placed him directly before himself and Kastro. 177
  • Can coordinate the beasts remotely while directing allies across the battlefield. 177 247
  • Prepared Black Sage to forcibly exchange Genthru's position and send him into Hisoka's waiting ambush during the Greed Island operation. 244
  • The beasts can be damaged or slowed by sustained attacks: Black Sage was battered by Terrence's aura bullets, while White Sage sustained blade wounds from Gabri. 16
  • His forced positional exchange is explicitly called Forced Exchange. Against Sabu, he used Black Sage to place the opponent less than a meter in front of Kastro for a decisive finishing strike. 247
  • Can deliberately dispel a beast just before an opponent's attack lands. He used this tactic with White Sage to make Sabu punch empty air, lose his balance, and expose himself to Nico. 247
  • Can rescue allies by exchanging them with Black Sage. During a confrontation with Little Azure, he moved Knuckle out of the path of its tail, allowing the beast to take the blow instead; he then manifested Black Sage again. 268
  • Used Forced Exchange to disrupt a Chimera Ant squad's formation and make its members kill one another. 303
  • Continued using the beasts for coordinated attacks against Birdmen and positional ambushes against Marine Vice Admirals. 458 481

Nen Combat

Goreinu is an Emission-type Nen user and a capable close-range combatant who can reinforce himself with Ken and fight alongside his Nen beasts. He can also fire Nen projectiles for ranged support. 9 15 177

  • Formed Ken to withstand one of Terrence's tracking aura bullets before counterattacking. 15
  • Personally engaged Terrence to stop his long-range attacks on Colton Family guards. 15
  • Combined his own strikes with Kastro's attacks to rapidly incapacitate the Carlson convoy's Nen-user escort. 177
  • Fired Nen bullets from behind cover into groups of convoy guards, aiming to knock them down rather than kill them. 177
  • Targeted a wound previously inflicted by Kalluto on a six-legged Dark Continent beast, shattering one of its legs and destabilizing it for Sophia and Kastro's finishing attacks. 410
  • Tested an unknown spherical creature with a Nen projectile. The creature absorbed the attack and briefly glowed instead of suffering visible damage. 416
  • Used a precise Nen bullet to destroy an opponent's foothold during the battle against the Birdmen, forcing another jump and disrupting her balance. 458
  • Maintained Ken while entering Gran Tesoro at Leo's instruction as a precaution against Tesoro's gold dust. Leo did not regard Nen's ability to block that dust as confirmed. 466

Tactical Command

Goreinu serves as a practical field leader in small-team operations, particularly alongside Kastro and Nico. 175 176

  • Reviews intelligence on enemy bases, escape routes, safe houses, equipment, and smuggling routes before committing to an operation. 175 176
  • Selected the Carlson Family's most valuable arms-and-metals route as the team's target, intending to force Victor Carlson into the open. 176
  • Uses terrain, surveillance, communications control, and surprise attacks to offset numerical disadvantages. 176 177
  • Managed his team's positioning and ability cooldowns during the battle against Bara and Sabu. 247
  • Monitors allies' stamina and condition while coordinating attacks, and can communicate decisive instructions through gestures rather than spoken commands. 247
  • Participates in post-battle discussions to review the team's gains and losses, including after the Birdmen encounter. 458

Bestowed Leveling Ability

Leo grants Goreinu an additional ability as part of his preparations to strengthen the team for the Dark Continent. The ability supplies a leveling system that improves physical strength, recovery, and self-healing. Unlike Leo's own unrestricted growth, the companions' growth is not limitless. Leo can revoke the bestowed power at any time. 270

  • The bestowal costs Leo lifespan rather than imposing an equivalent cost on Goreinu. 270
  • Goreinu accepts the ability alongside Sophia, Kastro, Kalluto, Shizuku, Asher, Nico, Morel, Shoot, and Knuckle. 270
  • Goreinu's individual level and precise numerical improvements are not stated. 270

Six Powers

After reaching the New World, Goreinu trains in the physical combat techniques taught by Leo. These techniques do not depend on Devil Fruits or Haki. The group initially learns the taught techniques at a basic level, then continues refining airborne movement every day. 463 465

  • Rankyaku — Goreinu and Kastro demonstrate tremendous power when practicing this technique. 465
  • Geppo — Allows him to move through the air; he uses it to reach Gran Tesoro with the rest of the group. 465 466
  • Soru and Geppo coordination — Practices connecting the two techniques to improve speed and mobility. 465
  • Training limits — Leo deliberately does not teach Tekkai, considering it inferior to Ken and an unnecessary use of the team's training time. 465

Background / History

Traveling and meeting Leo

While traveling through Kent City, Goreinu entered a restaurant's Big Eater Contest on a whim. He used Black Sage and White Sage to covertly accelerate his eating, finishing a roast pig in 45 minutes and 35 seconds to claim the 500,000 Jenny prize. Leo placed second and recognized that Goreinu had used Nen. 9

Initially suspicious of Leo, Goreinu relaxed after learning that Leo was also a Nen user whose Nen had been sealed. The two exchanged contact information, and Goreinu warned Leo not to reveal all of his strength too early at Heaven's Arena. 9

Vivian Colton's bodyguard

During later travels in Toth City, Goreinu became caught up in a gang conflict and saved Vivian Colton, daughter of Colton Family leader Old Colton. Vivian had been delayed while shopping and avoided the road ambush that killed her father and several senior family members. After protecting her, Goreinu accepted one billion Jenny to serve as her bodyguard for a month. 12 13

He successfully repelled several attacks, but was seriously injured after confronting two Nen users working for the Cleaners. Goreinu had wounded the gun-wielding Terrence, only to be ambushed by Gabri, an Enhancer armed with a Bian Clan Saber. 12 13

After seeing Leo in a Heaven's Arena promotional broadcast and realizing that his Nen might have recovered, Goreinu called him for help. Vivian offered three billion Jenny for dealing with the attackers, which Goreinu proposed splitting equally with Leo while making clear that he could refuse the dangerous job. 12

When the Waldeck Family attacked the Colton manor, Goreinu took command of its defense and summoned Black Sage and White Sage to confront Terrence and Gabri. He was eventually overwhelmed by their coordinated attacks until Leo intervened, killed Gabri, and helped him escape the immediate danger. 14 15 16

Goreinu also helped Leo investigate the Cleaners through Hunter-exclusive intelligence channels. The two deliberately publicized information about the organization to attract Mizaistom Nana, who appeared at the manor and arrested Terrence. 14 16

Mistpine Town incident

While traveling through Mistpine Town, Goreinu noticed suspicious reports of a lumberjack's death and a supposed gold discovery that had drawn residents into Mistpine Forest. He followed the townspeople to a cave near Pinewood Lake and discovered that no one who entered returned. 120 123

After overhearing Cleaners members discuss a secret realm, human experiments, and the Doctor, Goreinu was discovered and attacked. Layard struck him from behind and forced him over a cliff, leaving him with a broken arm, severe chest injuries, and internal damage. Goreinu survived the fall, hid from pursuers, and contacted Leo. 122 123

Layard had intentionally left Goreinu a chance to survive and escape, using his discovery as an opportunity to pass information onward. The other Cleaners, concerned that their operation would be exposed, ordered a search for him. 122

Leo found and treated Goreinu in Mistpine Forest. Goreinu passed on the cave's location and warned Leo about the Doctor before Nico escorted him away for medical care. 123

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recovery and joining Leo's team

Goreinu recovered in hospital under Nico's care. Though badly injured, he remained optimistic and expressed a desire to further develop Black-and-White Sage. 129

After recovering, he reunited with Leo and the group at Heaven's Arena. Leo formally introduced Goreinu as a member of his team, where Goreinu quickly integrated with Kastro, Nico, Wing, Shizuku, Asher, Gon, Killua, and Zushi. 168

This was Goreinu's first visit to Heaven's Arena. During the gathering's Nen-control exercise, he completed the task in one minute and fifty seconds; having only recently recovered and gone two months without using his aura, he was still rusty. 168

He trained at Heaven's Arena and reached the 200th floor. 169

Kastro and Nico supported his training through sparring, helping him recover his strength faster than expected. Goreinu later watched Gon's match against Hisoka and reported the result to Leo, along with Gon and Killua's departure and their gratitude for his guidance. 169 170

Douglas Family conflict

Vivian later contacted Goreinu when the Douglas Family began targeting Colton Family interests. Goreinu accepted the job after reviewing the intelligence, then formed an operational group with Kastro and Nico. 173 174

The trio targeted the Carlson Family, a Douglas subordinate. With Nico locating the gang's highest-value smuggling route and blocking communications through Network Canopy, Goreinu and Kastro ambushed a thirteen-vehicle convoy carrying arms and rare metals. 175 176 177

The ambush ended in less than ten minutes. After defeating the Nen escort and suppressing the remaining guards, Goreinu offered survival to those who surrendered, while Dean's group arrived to collect the cargo and clear the scene. 177

During the broader gang war, Goreinu reconnoitered the Griffin Family headquarters, waited for enemy numbers to diminish, and helped coordinate subsequent operations. He later recorded Owl's testimony and received Douglas Family asset information from Leo for the Colton Family. 183 184 192

Greed Island operation

Goreinu volunteered to enter Greed Island with Kastro and Nico after Leo explained that it was a real island and that death within the game would also mean death in reality. He remained interested despite the risks. 231

The three collected cards and planned to participate in Antokiba's rock-paper-scissors tournament for the Sword of Truth. Before leaving the game, Leo transferred his remaining cards to them and suggested cooperating with Hisoka against the Bomber. 234 240

Goreinu traveled to Aiai with Kastro and Nico to confront the Bomber group. Although wary of Hisoka's unpredictability, he accepted a temporary alliance in which Hisoka would face Genthru. 243

He prepared Black Sage to switch Genthru into the ambush position near Hisoka during the card-trade trap. During the later melee, Goreinu summoned both sages to support Nico and Kastro against Sabu and Bara, then managed the team's battlefield coordination as they secured victory. 244 246 247

His decisive interventions included dispelling White Sage to unbalance Sabu, exchanging Sabu into Kastro's striking range, and repeatedly interrupting Bara's counterattacks. Once their opponents were defeated, he signaled that the area was secure and accompanied Kastro and Nico toward Hisoka's fight. 247

The trio arrived after Hisoka had effectively defeated Genthru and refrained from intervening. Hisoka subsequently left the unconscious, critically injured Bomber leader in their care. 249

Goreinu supported the team's eventual clearance of Greed Island. After the final card quiz, he accompanied Kastro, Gon, Killua, and Biscuit to receive the clearance rewards, and supported Kastro and Nico in their return to the real world. 251

Heaven's Arena takeover and further preparation

Goreinu was present when Jade's forces seized Heaven's Arena during the Fighting Olympia event. He reacted angrily to the armed takeover but remained with the group as Morel warned against moving while the audience was held at gunpoint. 260

During a later confrontation with Little Azure, Goreinu used Forced Exchange to save Knuckle from the dragon's tail strike, sacrificing Black Sage's position to absorb the impact. 268

Leo subsequently granted Goreinu a revocable leveling ability intended to improve the team's survival prospects on the Dark Continent. Goreinu accepted it alongside the other companions. 270

Chimera Ant campaign

Goreinu participated in the team's operations against the Chimera Ants. When Kite expressed surprise at their strength and seamless coordination, Goreinu explained that they belonged to the same team under Leo's leadership. 294

Under Kite's supervision, Goreinu fought alongside Kastro, Sophia, Shizuku, and Asher against an expedition squad. His Nen beasts moved throughout the battlefield while Forced Exchange disrupted the ants' formation and caused them to attack one another. Leo separately eliminated Wadingo, a squadron leader observing the group from a distance. 303

After the campaign, Goreinu eventually left Colton Manor with Kastro, Asher, Nico, Kalluto, Sophia, and Shizuku, taking Little Azure with them. 334

Dark Continent expedition

Leo granted Goreinu an additional leveling ability, which could be revoked at any time. Goreinu accepted the power alongside Leo's other companions. 270

He later joined Leo's expedition toward the Dark Continent. After crossing through the passage, he and Shizuku immediately established overlapping fields of view while the group secured its landing area. 405 407 He continues to support the team dynamically in monster encounters and combat logistics across the swamplands and unknown regions. 410 458

During the voyage, Goreinu joined the group's card games with Hisoka and suspected cheating after repeatedly drawing the same hand, though he had no evidence. He also prepared to fight the enormous octopus encountered in the Dark Sea, but Leo ultimately resolved the threat without the team's assistance. 396 398 400

In the initial overland exploration, Goreinu helped kill a six-legged beast by firing into an existing leg wound. He later observed Bai neutralize an underground Earth-vein Giant Worm Beast without interfering. 410 411

At a canyon filled with mysterious spherical creatures, his Nen projectile was absorbed without inflicting visible damage. The group followed Leo's decision to detour rather than escalate the encounter, then reached the wetland where Nitrolomi grew. Goreinu subsequently used the protective clothing supplied for the marsh search. 416 420

During the Birdmen battle, Goreinu combined precise ranged fire with attacks from his gorillas to disrupt enemy balance and formation. Afterward, he joined Sophia and the others in reviewing the encounter. 458

New World and Gran Tesoro

After the expedition reached the New World, Goreinu trained in the Six Powers under Leo. He showed considerable power with Rankyaku and joined the group's daily practice of Geppo and its coordination with Soru. 465

Goreinu then flew with the group to Gran Tesoro using Geppo. Before landing, he followed Leo's instruction to maintain Ken as a precaution against the gold dust associated with Gild Tesoro's control. He accompanied the group into the golden city, where Leo forced Baccarat to lead them to its ruler. 466

In a later clash with Marine Vice Admirals, Goreinu used Black-and-White Sage and Forced Exchange to place one of the officers directly before Kastro's fist. Their coordinated tactics helped the group defeat the Marines. 481

Goreinu remained with the group aboard Gran Tesoro and watched Bullet spar with Hisoka. He openly praised Bullet's strength, while Morel assessed that only Hisoka and Kastro among their companions could face him head-on. 496
