A young man stood before him.
Black-haired, dressed in a blue-and-white fitted long robe, his features were ordinary yet somehow pleasant. He was smiling at him.
Flender did not recognize this person at all.
"Who are you?!" His voice rose, his shoe-sole-like face filled with fury. "Which blind young fool from the village are you? Who let you in?! This is private property of Shrek Academy! How did you break in?! Get out, now!"
The young man did not move.
His expression did not even change.
He simply stood there with a smile, as though watching a good show.
Flender grew even angrier. He was about to raise his hand and blast this ungrateful brat out.
Then his world went silent.
Nine rings of light emerged beneath the young man's feet.
Yellow, yellow, purple, purple, black, black, black, black, red!
Nine Soul Rings bloomed within Flender's cramped room, the final blood-red ring dyeing the entire wall crimson.
Flender's curses stopped abruptly.
As if someone had seized him by the throat.
In a single second, his face went from livid to pale, then deathly white. His knees weakened, and his lower back struck the edge of the table. His black-rimmed glasses slid halfway down his nose.
Nine rings.

And that red ring.
Flender's Adam's apple bobbed twice. Every curse in his mouth jammed in his throat; he could not force out a single word.
Yang Xing withdrew his Soul Rings. The light faded, and the room returned to the dim yellow glow of its lamps.
"Sorry about that." Yang Xing's tone was as casual as greeting someone at a market. "I startled you, Headmaster Flender."
Within three seconds, Flender's expression underwent a transformation worthy of an award-winning actor.
