Background

Xu Ye transmigrated into a demon-plagued world eighteen years before the story begins. Born with blocked martial veins, he was unable to cultivate despite being the son of Xu Cheng'an, a Demon-Suppression Guard. He lived an ordinary life with his younger sister, Xu Zhizhi, until Su Qingxue sought to seize his family’s special-pardon quota for entry into the Demon-Suppression Bureau. 1 20

Su Qingxue coerced him by threatening Xu Zhizhi. Xu Ye negotiated three thousand taels and the Qi Refining Formula in exchange for the quota, then used the three-day delay before transferring it to begin cultivating. His long-delayed system, Heaven Rewards Diligence, appeared at this critical moment and made effort alone sufficient for advancement. 2 4

History

After the Clear Spring Gang beat Xu Zhizhi, Xu Ye retaliated, crippling Wan Laosan and later attacking the gang’s headquarters. He killed its leaders and destroyed its demon collaboration, including an eighth-level cat demon whose head he crushed with his bare hands. To avoid implicating his sister, he had planned to make the gang’s deaths appear to have happened on its own turf. 5 6 7 10

Demon-Suppression Bureau officers Du Yuanxiu and Lü Tao arrived at the aftermath. Du Yuanxiu recognized Xu Ye as his old friend Xu Cheng'an’s son, while both officers agreed to handle the Clear Spring Gang’s crimes and prevent the incident from being traced back to Xu Ye. 11

Xu Ye entered the Demon-Suppression Bureau examination to obtain protection, stronger techniques, and a safer future for Xu Zhizhi. He killed 120 demons during the examination’s Demon Prison trial, taking first place. After swearing the Demon Guard oath, he found his father’s spirit tablet in the Hall of Martyrs and received the Bureau’s uniform, token, saber, Demon-Subduing Scripture, and the first-rank Demon-Subduing Saber Technique. 20 21

Assigned to a patrol group with Lin Yuyan and Zhao Heng, Xu Ye became its leader after decisively defeating Zhao Heng. He later revealed his ninth-level Meridian Opening strength by killing two weasel demons, then advanced to Qi Manipulation shortly afterward. 28 29 35 36 37

During the Mu Family Town mission, Xu Ye fought Xi'er, a fox demon in the Qi-Controlling Realm. His own Qi Manipulation cultivation allowed him to project spiritual power through the Demon-Slaying Saber and contend with her directly. 47 48

Xu Ye’s conflict with the Su Family culminated in Su Yu’s death. After Su Yu repeatedly exploited the family’s influence and provoked him, Xu Ye publicly beheaded him with the Demon-Slaying Saber. 39 40 60 61

Personality

Xu Ye is intensely devoted to Xu Zhizhi. Threats against her are the fastest way to provoke his violence: he maimed Wan Laosan for striking her, eradicated the Clear Spring Gang for the attack, and nearly killed Su Yu when Su Yu threatened her again. 5 6 40

He is relentlessly diligent and treats strength as the only dependable means of protecting himself and his family. Rather than relying on talent, he repeatedly attributes his rapid advances to constant cultivation and practice. 3 27 36

Though ruthless toward those he considers threats, Xu Ye is not thoughtlessly reckless. He withheld the killing of the Clear Spring Gang in public because he did not want legal consequences to endanger Xu Zhizhi, and he recognizes the practical value of authority within the Demon-Suppression Bureau. 6 22
