- The Bureau's badge and uniform carry substantial deterrent power. The influential Su Family withdraws an attempted public attack after learning Xu Ye is a Demon-Suppression Guard 23.
- The Bureau supports the families of its members, a protection that allowed Xu Ye to grow up safely while his father served as a guard 1.
- It maintains memorial tablets for fallen Demon Guards and requires recruits to swear before them to uphold the Bureau's mission 20.

Recruitment and Induction
There are two documented ways to enter the Demon-Suppression Bureau 13.
| Method | Requirements / Result |
|---|---|
| Special-pardon warrant | Granted as consideration for those who die in service to the country. It permits entry without the ordinary examination and provides extensive benefits without mandatory missions or combat assignments 1. |
| Open examination | Held once every six months for qualified applicants from across the land 13. |
Examination
| Stage | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Strength test | Strike a Bureau testing stele; candidates must be at least the third level of Meridian Opening to advance 15 | The stele can accurately determine a person's cultivation level 15. |
| Demon Prison trial | Kill at least two imprisoned demons within one hour 17 | The Bureau keeps records of kills to prevent fraud 18. |
| Oath and appointment | Swear before the tablets of fallen guards to slay demons, defend righteousness, and protect the people 20 | Successful candidates receive Black-Robed Demon-Suppression Guard status and standard equipment 20 21. |
Only thirteen of several hundred applicants passed Xu Ye's examination session 21.
Resources, Rewards, and Protection
- New Demon Guards receive a copy of the rank-one Demon-Subduing Scripture; passing it on privately is punishable by death 21.
- Merit earned through demon-slaying is rewarded with silver and contribution points, with stronger demons producing larger rewards 37.
- Contribution points can be exchanged within the Bureau for cultivation methods, martial skills, and other resources 21 37 51.
- The Bureau's official protection extends to members' families. A White-Robed guard may receive a Bureau residence where their family is protected from outside threats 41.
- Special-pardon entry is especially valuable because it provides material support, official status, and Bureau protection without the normal danger of frontline service 1.
Standard Equipment
- Black robe — Standard uniform of newly inducted Demon-Suppression and Demon-Patrol Guards 20 21.
