Ye Ting was merely curious about the Philosopher's Stone. He wanted to use it for experiments and uncover its secrets.
Unfortunately, at his current level of magical ability, he could not yet crack the Mirror of Erised and obtain the Philosopher's Stone by cheating.
On the other hand, even if he could get the Philosopher's Stone, he did not want Dumbledore to discover that he had taken it. Before he became invincible, being watched by Dumbledore was certainly not a good thing.
So, he could only take the Philosopher's Stone while fishing in troubled waters, and the best opportunity would be at the end of the term, when Harry Potter and Voldemort fought over it.
Since he had already altered the plot, Hermione was no longer part of the main trio, so he could not guarantee that Harry would successfully reach the final obstacle and confront Voldemort this time.
To prevent any accidents, Ye Ting decided to delay this expedition until the end of term. That way, he could run into Harry or follow behind him.
If Ye Ting, Hermione, and Penelope's raiding party entered the obstacles before Harry and Voldemort, Ye Ting's abilities would certainly be enough to clear every challenge and reach the Mirror of Erised.
But if they did that, breaking through the obstacles early might prompt Dumbledore to reset them. Then the plot would change drastically, and the chance to fish in troubled waters and obtain the Philosopher's Stone would become negligible.
That was the plan. For now, Ye Ting still needed to do two things: learn Wizard Chess, and acquire a better flying broomstick—one that would be useful not only for this challenge, but also for future travel and Quidditch matches.
During his duel with Roger, Ye Ting had discovered the shortcomings of the Cleansweep Five. Not only did its speed and handling fail to meet his requirements, but its quality was not particularly good either. Whenever Ye Ting tried to force a maneuver or perform an extreme move, he could feel that the broom had reached its limit and might fall apart at any moment. It forced him to hold back, leaving him unable to fight at full strength.
Of course, if Roger knew that, he might be so devastated that he gave up Quidditch entirely.
As for flying broomsticks, Ye Ting had his own idea: he would make one by hand that suited him, rather than buy a ready-made broom.
The flying broomsticks in the world of Harry Potter were all made from ordinary wood. Although those woods possessed some magical properties, they were still far too mundane overall—the same was true for wands.
But when it came to materials, Ye Ting had his own advantage.
Every month, he could perform a cross-dimensional summon. Though it usually yielded nothing, he occasionally summoned some good things, including many rare materials.
A long time ago, he had summoned a branch from G'hanir. G'hanir was the mother tree inhabited by Aviana, the raven demigod from World of Warcraft.
It was not famous in itself, but its three seeds had grown into three renowned World Trees: Nordrassil, Teldrassil, and Vordrassil.
Of those three trees, Nordrassil had been enchanted by the Dragon Aspects. While sealing away the new Well of Eternity created by Illidan, it became the mother tree of the night elves.
Teldrassil was another major habitat of the night elves, and their capital, Darnassus, lay within it.
Vordrassil stood in Northrend and could have become the first World Tree of the night elves. However, its roots grew too deep and even reached the lair of the Old God Yogg-Saron, causing Yogg-Saron's power to leak out. In the end, it was destroyed.
As the mother tree of the World Trees, the power contained within G'hanir was easy to imagine.
Moreover, this branch was Aviana's favorite and most frequent perch. It contained immense magical power, and a wand made from it would definitely surpass every wand in the world of Harry Potter—including the legendary Elder Wand.
However, Ye Ting did not want anyone else to learn of this branch's existence, so he stored it away for the time being until he learned how to make wands.
Besides that, Ye Ting had obtained other materials as well, such as Tiamat's whiskers and the Golden Fleece—things that existed only in legends. Yet Ye Ting could sense that both materials came from the same world: Type-Moon.
Then, on the summoning day a few days ago, he had luckily summoned two kinds of mythical wood: branches of Fusang and Ruomu.
In mythology, Fusang was the divine tree where the sun rose, while Ruomu was the divine tree where the sun set.
Leaving aside the powerful properties of the materials themselves, they also carried the symbolic meanings of sunrise and sunset. Such symbolism was actually quite important in magic.
When used to make a flying broomstick, these two kinds of wood could even give it the flight speed of a Golden Crow patrolling the earth.
But before making his own flying broomstick, Ye Ting first needed to find a laboratory, then buy several flying broomsticks to take apart and study.
Actually, there was a place at Hogwarts that was perfectly suited to serve as Ye Ting's laboratory: the Room of Requirement.
