Background

Hermione was raised in a Muggle family with no prior connection to magic. Her Hogwarts letter astonished her, but she was delighted by the prospect of studying at what she considered the best school of magic. Before even boarding the Hogwarts Express, she had memorized the school textbooks to ensure she could keep pace with other students. 9

She first encountered Ye Ting while chasing his cat familiar, Himari, through the Hogwarts Express. Learning that Ye Ting also came from Muggle society immediately made her feel closer to him; their conversation soon became an intellectual contest in which Hermione recognized him as a peer who could match her love of learning. 8 9

Unlike her original Gryffindor path, Hermione becomes a Ravenclaw student. Her academic knowledge, competitiveness, and hunger for discovery make her one of the house’s most prominent students. 114 200 327

Her early Hogwarts years include traumatic encounters with a falling broomstick, a troll, and the Basilisk. These memories later hinder her first attempts at the Patronus Charm, but also strengthen her resolve to overcome fear and improve. 24 109

Appearance

Hermione is initially described as a girl with thick brown hair and prominent front teeth. As she grows older and begins taking greater care with her appearance, her beauty becomes more widely recognized at Hogwarts. 8 284

  • Thick, curly brown hair. 8 311
  • Prominent front teeth in her first year. 8
  • Initially known for a bookish, unfashionable presentation before later revealing a more polished appearance. 284

Personality

Hermione is proud, intensely curious, and highly competitive. She introduces herself rapidly, volunteers that she has memorized her textbooks, and dislikes meeting an academic equal in Ye Ting. Her confidence can make her blunt or dismissive toward people she believes have not studied enough. 9 114

She is also exceptionally persistent. During Patronus training, she refuses to quit after being overwhelmed by memories of past danger, insisting that she must overcome her fears rather than fall behind Ye Ting. 109

Although her outlook is shaped by Muggle values of independence and equality, Hermione remains compassionate toward marginalized groups. As an adult, she pursues reforms for house-elves and other nonhuman beings while working to reduce prejudice against Muggle-born witches and wizards. 282 327
