As for the force behind the Scourge, it was in fact the question that concerned everyone present the most.
They did not believe the Scourge was a disaster that had appeared out of nowhere, nor did they believe that the Cult of the Damned alone could unleash a catastrophe of this scale.
After all, the history of the Eastern Kingdoms had never lacked cults. Some were merely farces dreamed up by fools, some sprang from the ambitions of evil mages shunned by the world, and some even had a powerful Loa behind them.
Yet no cult had ever caused consequences as severe as the Scourge.
They believed there had to be some mastermind pulling the strings behind it all.
Hearing that Ye Ting could shed light on the matter, all three of them brightened.

Several days earlier, Kel'Thuzad, the lich who had only recently been resurrected with the aid of water from the Sunwell, was conducting some sort of summoning ritual before an enormous altar.

After the third drop, the lich immediately righted the bottle, looking as though he feared pouring even one drop too many.
After all, because of Ye Ting's presence, the Scourge had not truly captured the Sunwell. They had only seized a small amount of its water, and part of that had been used to resurrect him.
