Background

A God Trial Taker is selected by a god to undergo divine trials and potentially inherit that god’s position. Ye Qingcang characterizes the relationship as analogous to teacher and disciple: the god chooses whom to accept, and the position belongs to the god rather than any presumed candidate. 132

The status was once extraordinarily rare. Shrek Academy’s students knew the first generation of Shrek Seven Devils as God Trial Takers, yet had heard of no others for ten thousand years before Ye Qingcang’s emergence. 86 Ye Qingcang became publicly identifiable as an Asura God Trial Taker after surviving Slaughter City’s Hell Road, bearing a red sword mark on his forehead. 2

Gods may select Trial Takers without descending in person by sending divine sense into the lower realm. The God of Desire identifies Dream Walking—entering a target’s Spiritual Space—as an efficient method of presenting a trial and evaluating a candidate. 322 323

The term does not always mean that a god sincerely intends to pass on their position. In the Divine Realm, some gods regard Trial Takers as expendable competitors, while an explicitly chosen inheritor has a far greater likelihood of completing the trials and is politically more important. 318 322

A God Trial Taker is commonly recognized by a divine mark between the brows and a faint godly aura.
