History

War with Sunagakure and Konoha

Kumogakure launched a surprise attack on Sunagakure’s Land of Wind border with roughly a thousand ninja. A, then identified as the future Fourth Raikage, led the assault. The attack drew Sunagakure patrols away from the border, allowing Hyuga Seisen’s team to escape 74 76.

Kumogakure later provoked Konoha in the Land of Hot Water. Its officer Sag intervened to save Ghost Spider from a Konoha ambush, then claimed his lightning attack had been an accidental response to an unknown chakra signature. Konoha’s leaders concluded that Kumogakure was trying to make Konoha strike first while it was already fighting elsewhere 87. Fighting around Yugama Pass subsequently grew into a prolonged campaign: Konoha and Kumogakure traded territory before reaching a stalemate 116.

A Konoha offensive later routed Kumogakure’s forces after Seisen used long-range arrows to kill mid-level commanders and disrupt their formations 223 224 225. Kumogakure responded with a Light Refraction Mist Barrier, explosive traps, and an ambush, but Seisen’s bombardment destroyed the position and approximately two hundred chūnin and special jōnin 229. A and Killer B then planned to attack Seisen at close range 229 230.

Conflict with Iwagakure

During a separate confrontation, Iwagakure broke a non-aggression pact and surrounded the Third Raikage with ten thousand ninja. He stayed behind to cover Kumogakure’s retreat and died fighting them 238 627. Kumogakure’s main force suffered more than fifty percent casualties; Konoha also held the Two-Tails at the time 240. A succeeded his father as Raikage and later accepted Hiruzen Sarutobi’s proposal for a joint move against Iwagakure. Kumogakure raided the Land of Earth’s rear, capturing cities and supplies before withdrawing after ten days of fighting 311 324.

Years later, the disappearance of Rōshi, Iwagakure’s Four-Tails jinchūriki, prompted an ultimatum accusing Kumogakure of taking him. Iwagakure lacked proof, but the villages repeatedly clashed in the Land of Frost over the following six months without entering a full-scale war 611 616.

Alliances against Konoha

Kumogakure joined Iwagakure, Sunagakure, and Kirigakure in planning an attack on Konoha after the villages came to regard Seisen as a threat. At their summit, A accepted a leading role in the assault but insisted the other villages attack simultaneously 348 349 351.

After Yugito, the Two-Tails’ jinchūriki, was captured, A sought a ceasefire with Iwagakure and joint pressure on Konoha 624. Kumogakure subsequently joined the other three villages in demanding an explanation and compensation for missing tailed beasts 625 626. In their renewed alliance, Kumogakure claimed a chakra-metal vein northeast of the Land of Fire and control of the Land of Hot Water as intended gains 628. Its elite forces deployed along the Land of Fire border, but a devastating attack later destroyed its frontline camp and killed thousands; A survived with severe injuries 632 639.

Military Forces and Tactics

• Lightning Release: Kumogakure assault squads use lightning techniques alongside Wind Release, explosive tags, and other ninjutsu. Lightning-enhanced physical combat is central to A’s fighting style 76 98 350.
• Barrier and ambush units: Its Light Refraction Mist Barrier is designed to obstruct Byakugan and sensory ninjutsu. Kumogakure paired it with hidden attackers and explosive-tag traps 229.
• Sensory forces: After Seisen’s arrows helped rout his army, A reassigned every available sensory ninja to locating the energy fluctuation produced when Seisen drew and fired his bow 225 226.
• Supply lines: Repeated long-range attacks on convoys led A to require ten-person transport squads and move supply routes underground 411.
