When Roy came to his senses, everything around him had changed drastically. The place he was in was no longer his cramped dorm room of less than a hundred square meters, but a pitch-black alley that seemed steeped in an ominous aura.
Before him was no longer the desktop computer that had accompanied him for years and still lagged no matter how many parts he upgraded, but a pack of wild dogs with glowing red eyes that looked half-starved.
"What's going on? Wasn't I fighting a Boss?"
Staring at the scene before him, Roy muttered under his breath.
He remembered that just moments ago, he had been fiercely arguing with some idiot on the team. How had he ended up here in the blink of an eye?
Roy could not make heads or tails of it, but looking at the wild dogs drooling from their mouths, he understood one thing: this was not a place to linger!
Still, he could not just run off blindly. Roy knew perfectly well that running around in front of these wild dogs would be suicidal. At the very least, he needed something handy to defend himself with.
It'd be great if I had a gun...
With a faint sigh in his heart, Roy swept his gaze across the area.
Woof!
The sudden bark caught Roy's attention. It seemed that dog was the leader of the pack!
At the sound of the lead dog, the wild dogs moved as if they had received an order. Almost instantly, they rushed forward and surrounded Roy, who had already backed up against the wall.
Perhaps they were ravenous, but without their leader's command, they did not attack directly.
An opening!
Without hesitation, Roy grabbed a wooden pole from nearby. At that very moment, the wild dogs launched their attack!
Roy locked onto the lead dog and struck. At the same time, he understood that even killing it would not solve anything. The moment his attack landed, those mad dogs would be able to bite him as well.
Yet he did not feel the impact of his blow for a long time, nor did the pain arrive.
When Roy came back to himself, everything around him had fallen still. The wild dogs remained frozen in the act of pouncing at him, while Roy was likewise frozen mid-attack!
If he had not been unable to move, Roy might have thought he had awakened something called The World. Still, it did not matter even if he had not awakened a Stand.
At least this counted as a turning point.
"Hostility detected. Origin fragment awakening... Reading class..." "Class read complete. Current class: Swordsman." "Name: Roy" "Gender: Male" "Race: Human (native race)" "Faction: Lungmen Guard Department" "Position: Instructor, Fourth Battalion, Auxiliary Police Corps, Lungmen Guard Department" "Level: 1" "Combat Power: 8" "Class: Swordsman" "Mastered Skill: Slash" "Possessed Item: Crude Wooden Stick"
Upon seeing this panel, Roy understood that his opportunity had arrived. Matters such as his identity could wait; this system-like thing had provided him with a chance to act.
At that moment, time resumed, and everything began moving along its original trajectory.
Use Slash on them!
The voice echoed in Roy's heart. He tightly gripped the wooden stick in his hand, and in the next instant, a strange power gathered within him.
Although he had never learned how to draw upon mana or how to use Slash, all he had to do was "press" the skill icon, and his body would execute the skill.
The confirmation took only an instant. Almost immediately, a faint glow emerged over the wooden stick. As he swung it, a silver crescent flashed past. The moment it touched the charging wild dogs, blood sprayed everywhere!
With a single strike, the charging wild dogs were cut in half. However, this was hardly a good thing.
The blood scent spreading through the air would draw even more wild dogs here, while Roy could only use Slash a few more times. Without Slash, he would die.
Drawn by the scent of blood, more wild dogs arrived in the area.
"I really am unlucky. Getting thrown into another world is one thing, but why did it have to be a hellhole like this?!"
Even as he complained, Roy did not stop moving.
At that moment, something an Ultraman warrior had once said flashed through Roy's mind:
"When trouble comes, you can't just sit around waiting to die!"
Under the current circumstances, those words could not have been more correct.
Roy did not know where this place was, but staying here was definitely not a good option. If he wanted to live, he had to keep moving forward!
After using Slash again to kill several pursuing wild dogs, Roy rushed into an alley by instinct. Behind him, the pack continued its relentless pursuit!
At this rate, Roy would sooner or later be caught by these things. However, when he entered a certain area, the wild dogs stopped. Like a driver who saw his car about to crash into a wall in the middle of the night, the dogs slammed on the brakes.
Their eyes still held a craving for food, but it was as though something in this area filled them with terror.
Roy could not worry about that. Whatever was over here, at least he could survive for now, right?
As for what came afterward... he would worry about it afterward!
With that thought, Roy walked straight ahead.
A few minutes later.
The farther he went, the wider the alley became. When Roy reached its end, he saw a plaza—a plaza filled with the stench of blood.
Corpses covered the entire plaza. Some wore what looked like standard police equipment from somewhere, while others looked like bandits. Judging from the blood that had not yet fully congealed, the battle had likely ended not long ago.
Before being thrown into another world, Roy had also been a police officer. Seeing this scene now, he could not help feeling sympathy for others in the same profession, though he had no idea whom these officers served.
"Maybe I can find some useful information ahead..."
"But if I go back the way I came, there's a good chance I can escape this place..."
Roy silently weighed his options as he looked at the scene.
By both reason and emotion, he should have chosen to retreat. After all, that was the only way he could survive. Yet he found that he could not make that choice.
His past experiences and sense of justice would not allow him to simply leave. Judging from the situation before him, he felt he should keep going, even if all the police officers who had come here had already died.
Roy approached the nearest police officer. Only then did he gain a clear understanding of their equipment. It was completely different from the bulletproof helmets and police stab-resistant vests he remembered.
This place seemed to still be in the age of cold weapons. These officers wore full suits of armor, and their weapons were close-combat tools like swords.
They had things like handcuffs, but no firearms. In Roy's former line of work, that was almost unimaginable, especially during a high-risk operation like this.
"Sorry, brother. I'll borrow these."
After tossing aside the wooden stick, Roy removed a pair of handcuffs from the officer and picked up the bloodstained standard-issue saber.
"I hope some of you are still alive."
After murmuring that, Roy headed deeper inside...
