The Heart of Change

"Young Master, Director Wang sent word. That young man you thought highly of stopped his operation."

Before a building somewhere in Lungmen, a grand opening ceremony was underway. The Young Master sat at the foremost seat among the honored guests when the lawyer who had come here leaned close and spoke softly into his ear.

Even after hearing the news, the Young Master's expression remained unchanged, as if whether that man had been pulled out or not mattered little to him.

Compared to that, he was more interested in the newly promoted officer.

The Young Master had reviewed the relevant files. He knew one thing: Roy had no background whatsoever, neither in Lungmen nor anywhere else.

If his performance during the factory incident had not caught the eye of Wei Yenwu's niece, Chen Huijie, he might have spent his days muddling through in the Auxiliary Police Corps, scraping out a living elsewhere.

Though he possessed talent, without anyone providing him a stage to perform on, he could only drift through life in mediocrity and confusion.

"Mm. And then?"

"Director Wang finds it difficult to make a move. He hopes that you, Young Master..."

"I understand."

As those words fell, the Young Master raised his head and looked toward the ceremony. As if by instinct, he had already begun considering the matter the moment the lawyer finished speaking. He weighed the gains and losses of every possible choice, considering how to maximize his own interests.

A moment later, he answered:

"This time, he went a little too far. Go teach him a lesson. Remember, don't kill him."

"Understood, Young Master."

After speaking, the lawyer turned to leave. At that moment, the Young Master suddenly continued:

"If possible, bring him before me. I want to have a chat with him."

"..."

"By your command."

After a brief pause, the lawyer replied, then left at once.

Several hours later, at the Lungmen Guard Department's Law Enforcement Case Handling Center.

The "Interrogator" had already left. The files on those mafia members had now been entered into the case system. Once approved, they were sent to the Lungmen Guard Department detention center, including the mafia leader himself.

The Special Operations Group had obtained the intelligence they wanted. Though all three showed surprise upon seeing it, since the Interrogator had already left, it meant there was no other valuable information left in that mafioso's mind. After all, the statement before them even clearly revealed trivial details, such as little things he had done on certain days and information about his first girlfriend.

No one doubted the authenticity of this intelligence. However, if it was indeed true, it was not good news for the Lungmen Guard Department—or even for all of Lungmen.

"Perhaps we shouldn't continue investigating in this direction."

After reading the intelligence, Swire gave that assessment.

Besides being a police officer, Swire was also an aristocrat from Victoria. As such, she possessed a mindset and political sensitivity unlike that of ordinary people.

The rise of the Six Harmonies Society and the mafia's ability to enter Lungmen and take root there owed much to those so-called "upper-class figures." Some of those upper-class figures were even members of the Lungmen Guard Department, and there were quite a few of them!

Since this was intelligence obtained by the Interrogator, it must already have been placed on the desk of Wei Yenwu, Lungmen's leader. However, Swire understood that Wei Yenwu would not take any excessively drastic measures, because he knew that while Lungmen appeared prosperous on the surface, it was actually riddled with holes.

Perhaps this intelligence had already been sitting on Wei Yenwu's desk before the investigation even began. If Wei Yenwu had been younger, Lungmen would have long undergone a purge from top to bottom. As a member of Great Yan's imperial clan, Wei Yenwu naturally understood what it meant for these people to grow powerful.

But he was no longer young. More than upholding fairness and justice, Wei Yenwu wanted Lungmen to remain stable. He did not want the city into which he and his brothers had poured so much effort to go up in flames. More than a decade ago, the city had nearly fallen to that snake's conspiracy, so Wei Yenwu could no longer take risks as he once had.

Swire understood this very well. If she were placed in Wei Yenwu's position, she would make the same choice. After all, she knew that cleaning out these people required time and careful planning. Acting rashly would only mean missing the right opportunity!

""

At that moment, Chen fell into temporary silence.

She knew darkness lurked within this city, but she had never imagined that this seemingly whole city was actually so riddled with holes. She understood that changing the city could not be accomplished merely by wiping out a single gang. To change the city, they needed an opportunity—an opportunity to set off reform.

Roy shared her thoughts. However, Roy understood one thing very clearly: carrying out reform in this world would not be easy, because the gap between the upper and lower classes was simply enormous.

Though its structure resembled the world he had lived in before, Roy knew this city was not suited to him. Before long, he would leave.

Naturally, he could not say something like that at a time like this. Only he needed to know it—at least, for now, only he needed to know.

"Perhaps you're right, Swire."

After placing the record in his hand back on the table, Roy slowly raised his head.

This city needed change. Then, before he left, he would stir up a wind of reform for it. As for how far the city could go afterward, that was no longer something Roy needed to concern himself with.

At that moment, a plan emerged in his mind.

"But I won't give up. I believe this city will change before long."

As soon as he finished speaking, Roy walked toward the door. After scanning his fingerprint, he pulled open the door and prepared to leave.

Then a voice stopped him in his tracks.

"What do you want to do?"

"Do what I should do."

With that, Roy walked straight out of the Law Enforcement Case Handling Center.

Several minutes later, at the entrance to the Guard Department.

Just as Roy was preparing to leave, someone suddenly blocked his way. When Roy turned to look, he saw the Interrogator.

"What is it, Mr. Interrogator? Do you need something from me?"

"Lord Wei wishes to see you."

After those brief words, he turned and headed upstairs. Roy wanted to see just what Lungmen's leader had to say.
